THE Daily Bale: Anorak’s daily look at the Tottenham Hotspur star in the news.

Former Brazil star Zico (formerly “The White Pele”) says Bale has “to compete in the Champions League”. Spurs fans nod as his sagacity.

The BBC reports:

The Tottenham midfielder’s agent told Spanish television in May that the PFA Player of Year and Young Player of the Year would be willing to listen to an offer from Real Madrid this summer, though Spurs have insisted he is not for sale.

If Bale goes to Real Madrid, what will Barcelona, their rivals in Spain’s annual two-horse race, make of it? Barca’s Cesc Fabregas is here to tell us:

“For me spending 100million on Gareth Bale is foolish, I don’t know how any club could spend that amount of money in these circumstances. He is a great player with all the right attributes, but we will have to see if Madrid sign him and if he can perform there.”

Not hard to detect a bit of fear in Fabregas’ there. And always good to hear a man on a Barcelona contract that includes a buy-out clause set at 200m euros (£175m) who agitated for a £35m move from Arsenal talking of value in these times of economic hardship.

But what about Bale heading to PSG with Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas? Jacob Steinberg says no. He tells Guardian readers that PSG have been “thwarted in their attempt to appoint Tottenham’s Andre Villas-Boas as their new manager”.

It’s not all good news for Tottenham, though, because Gareth Bale is off to Real Madrid! How do we know this? Because they have earmarked the No11 shirt, previously worn by Ricardo Carvalho, for the Welsh flyer. Madrid really do know how to woo a target. They’ve even promised there’ll be a mint waiting on his pillow every evening.

Spanish daily Marca has raken to calling Bale The Eleventh Galactico.

Eleven? Who are they, then? There’s Bale, Ronaldo… Did we mention Ronaldo..?
