express-1-329x437MADELEINE MCCANN: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at the missing child in the news:

The Daily Express leads with its customary picture of ‘Our Maddy’ and the headline: “Maddy Arrests Within Weeks.”

Also:

“Cameron backing new investigation”

Inside the paper, we learn:

Mr Cameron said the case of the then three-year-old who went missing from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Algarve in May 2007 was one that continued to shock the nation.

What did he say of the Met’s investigation?

“It is welcome because they say that there is new evidence, new leads to follow, new things to be done. It was a case that did shock and still shocks the nation and if an answer can be found we should try and find it.”

The Met made no word of new evidence. It merely said there were 38 “persons of interest” it would like to speak with.

The Express adds:

Neither her parents nor the McCanns’ friends who were having dinner with them that night are among the 38 people identified, police said.

These 38 appear to be new names.

The Express adds:

Detectives have now identified 38 potential suspects from five European countries, including Portugal. Twelve are UK nationals.

But they are not suspects yet. The Mirror has already labelled them as suspects. That was wrong.

But what about those headline-making arrest “within weeks“?

While detectives would not be drawn yesterday on any potential timetable for possible arrests, it is believed action could be taken before the end of the summer.

Possible. Believed. Could.

As ever, the most plain of facts – 38 new persons of interest – is twisted by the news into something different.

In other news, a couple of fraudsters have been arrested. The Daily Star reports that “Italian Danilo Chemello, 67, and his Portuguese girlfriend Estoril Vaz, 60” have been pinched in Portugal:

A month after Madeleine vanished in May 2007 Chemello and Vaz were seized on suspicion of trying to pocket a £2.5m reward for information about her whereabouts.

When the couple were arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from Madeleine’s doctor parents Kate and Gerry, specialist anti-kidnap police stormed their home in Sotogrande, Spain.

Newspaper cuttings about Madeleine, who disappear-ed days before her fourth birthday, were found in the property.

The reward remains unclaimed. But, then, the News of the World, which put up the reward posters, no long exists. But if you spot the the child, report it. She did:

An American woman claims to have seen Madeleine McCann in a restaurant in the U.S…

She spotted Madeleine in Montgomery County, Maryland:

“Saw a blonde girl equal to Maddie. Never felt something so strong,” said the woman…

As she explained to British newspaper The Sun , the girl was accompanied by a blonde woman and two men, one of them “scruffy and with foreign accent” and another “with gray hair and distinguished air.”

The woman also explained that he saw Maddie in 2009, two years after the girl’s disappearance, and that at that time, officials warned. But just been contacted by Scotland Yard about two months to recount what happened.

Such are the facts…
