 Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

SGT Sean Murphy was there when alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured hiding beneath the cover of a boat. He took photos. This one shows the 19-year-old carrying the red dot of a sniper’s rifle laser sight on his forehead.

Sgt Murphy says his pictures show the “real Boston bomber, not someone fluffed and buffed”.

Surely, he means to say ‘the alleged bomber’?

Murphy wants us to see his picture because he thinks the image of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine is a lie:

“The truth is that glamorising the face of terror is not just insulting to the family members of those killed in the line of duty, it also could be an incentive to those who may be unstable to do something to get their face on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.”

People will commit mass murder to get on the cover of Rolling Stone?

It’s easier than that. Justin Bieber made the cover because it became legal for adults to have sex with him. Simon Cowell got into bed with a dog. And, Murphy, if you kill lots of people you can get on the TV news and the front pages of pretty much all the world’s newspapers. Anyone driven to murder to be the Rolling Stones cover model is over 60 and wearing pink-tinted sunglasses indoors. Don’t panic.

And, for what it’s worth, Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to 30 charges, including the use of weapons of mass destruction. His is not the “face of terror”.

As for its excellent Rolling Stone cover, the mag states:

“Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and our thoughts are always with them and their families.

“The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day.

“The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens.”

According to the magazines own figures, most of is readers are white males aged aged 35 to  to 54. So. Look out for cover stories on 9/11 killer Mohammed Atta (a youth-reader getting 33), murderous despot Bashar Hafez al-Assad (47) and Alexis Flores, a 39-year-old who kidnapped and murdered a five-year-old child, elevating him to the FBI’s Ten most wanted list. Rolling Stones readers will love reading about someone their own age…
