Miley Cyrus: Shock as pop star dances provocatively in bikini
EVERYONE is talking about Miley Cyrus today. Why? Well, in a move which is incredibly unusual for pop stars, she danced provocatively while wearing not many clothes while singing a song.
Her now notorious performance at the MTV VMAs has, mystifyingly, drawn complaints… especially from a parenting pressure group over in America.
The Parents Television Council (PTC, who never complain about anything, honest) issued a complaint against the channel over the 20-year-old’s routine and said that the show should not have been rated as suitable for 14 year olds, adding: “Heads should roll at MTV.”
Hilariously, Miley’s father Billy Ray Cyrus is among those on the PTC’s advisory board.
“This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children,” Dan Isett, the PTC’s director of public policy said. “MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-coloured bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?”
Advisory board member Paul Porter added: “The Miley Cyrus/Robin Thicke performance simply substituted talent with sex.
Cyrus said her performance attracted ‘306,000 tweets per minute’, which is baffling, seeing as she performed a rather basic dance routine based on what she’s stolen from black artists, just like Elvis, Madonna and just about every single pop act has done, ever.
Cyrus, naturally, was unaffected, tweeting: “My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute. That’s more than the blackout or Superbowl!”
Why this is of any surprise to anyone is plain weird. Miley is just doing what all former Disney stars do – distancing herself from her past by playing with edginess. Ryan Gosling was a Mousekateer and stomped the shit out of someone’s head in Drive. Christina Aguilera did everything she could from the word go to prove she was anything but sweet.
So what’s going to happen with all this? There’s inevitably going to be dreadful ‘think pieces’ about cultural tourism, misappropriation of pop-culture sharing rights, people talking about race, sex in pop and all that jive…
…and Miley’s sales will go triple.
