Rare Nirvana Footage Appears Online (And Other Greatest Vids)

RARE footage of Nirvana playing their last ever LA gig has been put online by someone who knew the band. Within months of the recording, Kurt Cobain would cut his life short and rid us all of a band who, whether you liked their music or not, were really fun to be around.

Dave Markey who uploaded the footage which he shot in December ’93 (at Los Angeles’ Great Western Forum) said “20 years ago… I stood on Kurt’s side of the stage at my hometown’s Los Angeles Forum and captured the last set I would see of this band. A band that I had worked with, toured with; people that I would call my friends. A band that both the world and myself really loved (can’t really say this has happened since). Within just a few short months it would sadly all be over. I’m glad to have documented this show, as well as their pre-fame fun in 1991.”

Here’s the footage, which includes some nice cello and accordion action too!

In addition to that, Nirvana have been granted an induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and when you go through their history, you can see why.

While the video above is a lovely and late document of where the band were at before Kurt’s suicide, there’s a whole other bunch of great clips of the band in their awkward pomp! Let us reminisce.

Kurt Gets Punched!

During a stage dive, Kurt hits security in the face with the arse of his guitar and, of course, a burly bloke in a bandana isn’t going to take that from a puke like Cobain. That’s when our frontman gets a smack, everything kicks off and people of a certain age remember when big bands were still wonderfully amateurish.

Kurt’s Wheelchair

Pushed onstage by NME writer The Legend! (or Everett True if you prefer… or Jerry Thackray to his mum), Kurt’s entrance at the Reading Festival is one of the most iconic moments of the event. Kurt, feebly warbles while Krist Novoselic mocks and, knowing Reading, half the crowd missed it because they were too busy chucking bottles of excrement at each other.

Novoselic’s marvellous bass toss!

While performing on an MTV show, rattling through ‘Lithium’, Novoselic found he was having some problems with his bass amp. Instead of being boring and fixing it, he decided to throw his bass up into the air. Very, very high. And then it landed on his skull. Oh dear. And hurray.

Endless Nameless

Nirvana’s showstopping noisefest, ‘Endless Nameless’, rendered many a gig useless by slaying everything in sight with obliterating noise and nonsense. In this marvellous clip, you see Nirvana powerhousing their way through it and end up playing bassball with bits of broken equipment.

Kurt goes crazy in Rio!

In Rio, Cobain lost his mind a little and mercifully, allowed us all to join in the moment. He spits at cameras, tries to destroy a prop and shoves his junk up a lens. Then, finishes a bruising version of ‘Scentless Apprentice’. Terrific.
