Real Madrid’s Christiano Ronaldo of Portugal cries next to his son Ronaldo Junior after receiving the trophy for the world player at the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013 Gala in Zurich, Switzerland, Monday, Jan. 13, 2014.

LOUIS van Gaal used to manager Bayern Munich. In the vote for FIFA’s player of the year, the Ballon d’Or, Gaal didn’t pick  winner Cristiano Ronaldo or runner-up Lionel Messi.

The Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel noted it: in a piece called “Van Gaal’s vote of no confidence”:

Louis Van Gaal was tipped to be the next Tottenham Hotspur manager, before the appointment of Tim Sherwood. Indeed, some Tottenham fans were disappointed that they got a novice, not an acknowledged tactical genius.

Some Mail writers, too, like Craig Hope who noted in December 2013:

His numbers will make him the outstanding candidate. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy likes numbers and the current Holland boss boasts a rich resume in that respect. Consider these; seven league titles across four countries, three domestic cups, one Champions League, one UEFA Cup and another seven trophies taking in Super Cups and the like.

And there was Derek Hunter on December 28, 2013, also in the Mail:

But The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Van Gaal is ready to quit his job as Holland’s coach and is anticipating a move to London afterwards. Sources say Van Gaal had in-depth discussions with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy last week about his vision for the club and it is understood Levy was impressed with what he heard.

Also in December, Spurs, took Tim Sherwood as full-time head coach on an 18-month contract. And in a flash, Sherwood became better than Van Gaal. Why? wEll, Samuel will explain

Did you see the votes for the Ballon D’Or? Van Gaal, it seems, doesn’t fancy Cristiano Ronaldo; or Lionel Messi. Say what you like about Sherwood, but even he could probably work out they can play a bit.

Yaaay, Tim.

You can see how everyone voted here. Gaal opted for Franck Ribéry  Thomas Müller and Arjen Arjen. Yeah, three Bayern Munich players he coached.

He might not be a legend like Tim Sherwood, but Van Gaal is now shrinking violet.

Note: Who else chose Ribery as their footballer of the year? Well: The curent French coach Didier Deschgamps, the curent captain of France Hugo Lloris and the Frnce medida rep Ejnes Gérard. Someone tell Martin Samuel that the voters might be a tad biased.
