Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham tells media:

“The investigation into the disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wide-ranging and fast moving. As a result of inquiries the body of a young child was recovered in Fife just before midnight. We strongly believe this to be the body of Mikaeel. A person has been detained in connection with the recovery of the body and members of Mikaeel’s family have been informed. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this time. I would like to thank everyone who has responded to these highly unusual events by assisting with searches and other activities in support of this investigation. I would also like to acknowledge the overwhelming public response to requests for information, assistance and sightings. I am sure you will understand that I am unable to answer any further questions as the investigation continues.”

The Mirror notes:

A bungalow in Kirkcaldy, Fife, said to belong to Mikaeel’s aunt, has been sealed off, and there are reports of police activity in the area. An area of woodland behind the house has also been sealed off.

Adding:

Sky are reporting that Mikaeel Kular’s body was found at a bungalow in Kirkcaldy belonging to his aunt. Mikaeel’s grandmother is a local GP in the area. Mikaeel is believed to have lived in Kirkcaldy for a period of time before moving to Edinburgh with his mother.

The Sun quotes a “woman”:

“God bless him, he never stood a chance. They should release whoever has done this and let us deal with him.”

The spotter was 29-year-old tradesman, who asked not to be named. He said:

“I was on my way to work with a colleague. We turned into West Pilton Gardens and there was this kid walking along. I only noticed him because he looked at us and smiled. I thought it was odd he seemed alone but assumed his parents were nearby. I didn’t know anything about Mikaeel being missing until much later. I wasn’t sure at all if it was him but called the police and they came to speak to me and I showed them where it was. I’m not 100 per cent certain it was Mikaeel and I’ve tried to remember every detail… I wish I’d known — I’d have stopped him from going any further — but we had no way of knowing at the time.”

The Sun issued a reward:
