IS MICHAEL Schumacher dead? Dying? Not our question, you understand, rather those of the Daily Mirror editorial community, which thinks its readers want an update on the German driver’s health.

Schumacher is recovering from bad  skiing accident in which he suffered severe head injuries after hitting a rock. The 45-year-old is at the Grenoble University Hospital in France.

On January 18, the Mirror told readers:

F1 legend Michael Schumacher still in coma but his condition is no longer critical

Today Mirror readers are told:

Hopes fade for Michael Schumacher’s recovery amid fears he may be ‘in vegetative state after four-week coma’

Says who?

Jean-Marc Orgogozo, professor of neurology at the University of Bordeaux, said: “Every day, every week in a coma the chances decline that the situation is improving.”

Is he treating Schumacher? No. But he is talking to the Mirror, says the Telegraph:

Orgogozo told the Mirror: “Every day, every week in a coma the chances decline that the situation is improving.”

Oddly, Orgogozo said exactly the same thing to the Express. He also said exactly the same thing to French organ The Point two days ago. One thing the Point mentions that all the British papers forget to is that Orgogozo says “he did not know the record of this particular patient“.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm has already issue this statement:

“Michael’s condition remains critical but stable. We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael’s health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation.”

Or front-page news in the Daily Mirror…
