BOB Crow, the bolshie leader of the RMT Union has died. He represented a dying way of life: the strike for the working class. You might not have liked the effect of his work (long walks home as the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union enacted London Underground strikes), but you had to admire his tenacity.

Bob Crow was the most visible sign of the militant left. He once talked of a campaign of “civil disobedience”. His ideas included “Batman climbing up Number 10 to Spiderman going up Buckingham Palace.” He had a sense of humour and knew how to rile his enemies.

The London Evening Standard once wrote of him in an article entitled ‘The Crow Files”:

It is no coincidence that the bull-necked, bullhorn-voiced Mr Crow is an ardent support of Millwall football club, whose thuggish fans rejoice in their unpopularity. “No one likes us, we don’t care”, they sing from the terraces…which these days might as well be the slogan of Mr Crow and the RMT.
