ED Miliband has been in Israel, rediscovering his Jewish roots.

The Daily Mail quotes the Labour leader as saying: “I would be the first Jewish prime minister if we win the election.”

Indeed, as he had told Haaretz: “In a little over a year from now, Ed Miliband could well be the first Jewish prime minister of the United Kingdom.”

But he won’t be. In 1868, Benjamin Disraeli led the Conservative Party to victory in the General Election. He was the country’s first Jewish Prime Minister. He also coined the  ‘One Nation’ slogan Ed seems so fond of chanting.

Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), 1st Earl of Beaconsfield. British Conservative politician and novelist. Elected to Parliament in 1837.

Disraeli did convert from Judaism to the Church of England. Ed Miliband “married out” and is not an observant Jew and claims to be an avowed atheist, stating “I don’t believe in God”. He then said: “I describe myself as a Jewish atheist. I’m Jewish by birth origin and it’s a part of who I am…”

So. His ethnicity is that of a Jew, just like Disraeli.

So. Benjamin Disraeli was the UK’s first Jewish prime minister.

Does Ed know anything of history? In Israel, it’s never far away.

Labour leader Ed Miliband is shown around the Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, where he rekindled the eternal flame for the memories of victims of the holocaust and saw the Hall of Names dedicated to those who lost their lives in the holocaust.

Perhaps Ed should step aside and let Harriet Harman have a run at being the country’s first woman prime minister?
