TRANSFER Balls: a look at  Luke Shaw, the England and Southampton star:

In January, the Mirror John Cross told readers:

Manchester United transfer target Luke Shaw wants Chelsea move from Southampton even if it’s in the summer…

Shaw, a boyhood Chelsea fan, has set his heart on London rather than Manchester when the time comes to move.

The Express agreed:

Saints star Luke Shaw tells friends he wants £30m Chelsea move

In February, the Mirror repeated the mantra:

Shaw, a Chelsea fan, is said to be holding out for a move to his boyhood club

On March 31, Shaw was going to remain at Southampton, as the Express stated:

The 18-year-old has attracted the likes European heavyweights Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid after becoming a stand-out performer in the Saints’ back-four this term.

But Shaw, who made his senior debut for England earlier this year, insists he is only concerned on his performances for eighth-placed Southampton and believes his side will be ready to compete with the top Premier League clubs next season.

On May 27, TalkSport took out the Scattergun:

Man United, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea? Where next for Luke Shaw?

Cynics would suggest  Arsenal or Liverpool, the two top clubs not yet linked with the player.

And then drama. In June, the Star told us:

Luke Shaw’s move to Man Utd in jeoprady as Louis Van Gaal eyes Barcelona star Jordi Alba

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to end their interest in Southampton’s Luke Shaw and in order to try and sign Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba.

That was hard cheese on Shaw, because one day later, the BBC had reported:

England full-back Luke Shaw told Southampton on the final day of the Premier League season that he wanted to join Manchester United. The 18-year-old defender spoke to the Saints hierarchy at an event held at a hotel following the 1-1 home draw with United on 11 May. By that time, United had already made a £27m offer for the left-back.

What about his dream to play for Chelsea?

Today the Express reports that Shaw is a Manchester United player:

Southampton defender Luke Shaw has agreed personal terms over a £160,000-a-week contract at Manchester United.

The Metro tells us us why Chelsea didn’t get the teenager:

Manchester United look to have gazumped Chelsea in the race for Luke Shaw by offering the Southampton defender a whopping £160,000-a-week.

Chelsea – the team owned by the multi-billionaire – have been gazumped?

But hold on! The Guardian says Shaw has gone nowhere.

Southampton have claimed they would “prefer” not to partake in any transfers until a new manager is in place – with the club’s statement effectively conceding players such as Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana are for sale at the right price.

While Manchester United are Shaw’s chosen destination and Southampton are holding out for £30m from Liverpool for Lallana – each of whom are with the England squad at the Miami World Cup training camp – the club’s stance suggests the deals will only occur after the tournament, which starts on Thursday week, is played.

Such are the facts…
