TRANSFER Balls: Ander Herrera is finally a Manchester United player. Isn’t he?

On June 24, the Mail stated:

Manchester United will sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera for £28m TODAY

The Mail would be there to shout ‘FIRST’ and salute it’s own scoop. Only, it was balls.

That same day the Mirror also had news:

Manchester United expect to complete the signing of Ander Herrera within 48 hours.

The Mirror was hedging its bets. And it was also wrong.

The Express said the deal had been done. The money had been paid:

MANCHESTER UNITED have paid a £28m buy-out clause to sign Athletic Bilbao’s midfield maestro Ander Herrera.

It was wrong.

The Indy was wrong:

Marca claims Herrera is already in England and has signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford worth around £2.4m-per-year, while Radio Bilbao and El Larguero say the deal will be announced today.

And today the Guardian reports:

Athletic Bilbao reject Manchester United £28.85m bid for Ander Herrera

Athletic Bilbao have released a statement claiming they have rejected a €36m (£28.85m) bid for Ander Herrera from Manchester United. The statement read: “The Athletic Club wishes to report that this week it rejected an offer from Manchester United FC, estimated at €36m, to transfer the federation and economic rights of the player Ander Herrera.”

Incredible. Because last summer the Metro said United bought the man for more than that:
