Britain and France are at war with Germany following the invasion of Poland two days ago. At 1115 BST the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, announced the British deadline for the withdrawal of German troops from Poland had expired.
Many of the Londoners shown entering an underground shelter in St. James? Park in Westminster, England on Sept. 3, 1939, were still smiling as they walked down the steps after the state of war between Britain and screamed as soon after the war proclamation and the ?all clear? signal sounded 17 minutes later without it being apparent immediately whether the warning was intended as a drill or an actual alarm.
