THERE’S a bit of hubbub around a new video game that’s knocking about called ‘Hatred’. It is being hailed (or accused, if you prefer) as the most violent game ever.

Of course, fans of video games will roll their eyes at such a suggestion as there’s a whole host of gory splatterfests in the gaming canon.

So what’s the deal with ‘Hatred’? Well, you play a serial killer who is armed to the teeth and the new trailer shows that, basically, you play a man who murders civilians. That’s it. He’s got a hatred of humanity and need to vent it.

You can watch the trailer below, and we’ll patronise you by saying that we advise caution before watching it. It’s a game about a murderer so it isn’t going to be particularly pleasant, is it?

Once you’ve watched that, we’ll look at some other super violent video games and as ever, you’re advised to chip in with your own choices for violent games and your favourite spatterfests.

Carmeggedon

‘Carmeggon’ was a driving game where you razzed your vehicle around, hitting as many pedestrians and animals as possible. This game was censored in the UK and Germany and completely banned in Brazil and other countries.

Madworld

You may think of the Wii as the cuddliest console, filled with yoga games and nana playing Wii bowling at Christmas, but in ‘Madworld’, it had a pretty bloody game which aped the style of Sin City.

Mortal Kombat

Along with Doom, ‘Mortal Kombat’ was one of the most popular and innovative gorefests on the market, way back when. In it, you could rip out still-beating hearts and yank people’s heads off while they were still attached to the spine. Lots and lots of blood too. The famous fatality moves are etched in every gamer’s brain.

Night Trap

‘Night Trap’ is one of the most controversial games in history. So much so that in a 1993 joint Senate Judiciary and Government Affairs Committee hearing, it was described as an “effort to trap and kill women”. Many stores banned ‘Night Trap’ and newspapers called for it to be banned outright. Looking at it now, it is rather quaint.

Postal

‘Hatred’ has a precursor in the shape of ‘Postal’, which saw you playing someone on a merciless killing spree. You can kill people in all manners of ways, including beating someone to death with a spade or, if you prefer, weilding a badger.

Heavy Rain

The magnificent and brooding ‘Heavy Rain’ was part game, part thriller. It is notable for one particular scene where you have to saw your own finger off.

Grand Theft Auto

The GTA series is well known for the violence in it, and in GTA V, one scene really got some people’s dander up. The torture scene you see out includes breaking someone’s knee, waterboarding, electrocuting and yanking teeth out with pliers. Gruesome stuff. Nothing you haven’t seen in a bunch of movies though.

Phantasmagoria

‘Phantasmagoria’ was one of the biggest selling PC games of its time and featured a lot of graphic gore and a sexual assault scene. Naturally, it got a lot of bad press. In part, the media attention helped the game to sell more copies.

Splatterhouse

This side-scroller was one of the first notorious games that got people’s knickers in a twist. You played Rick Taylor, who popped on a hockey mask and went mental with a chainsaw. It was one of the first video game parental advisories. These days, it doesn’t look so bad, but at the time, it was one of the most brutal things you could play.

Chiller

Even though there are a lot of ultra violent video games in the history of gaming, this one sticks out as being one of the most bleak. Basically, with a light gun, you pointed a cursor at people and tortured them. There’s not much in the way of story, just hurting people for the sake of it.

Manhunt

Manhunt is a game that is spectacularly vicious, where you play a character stuck inside a snuff-style reality show where you have to kill everyone else to stay alive, in the most gruesome ways you can muster. The stabbings are hard and suffocating someone with a plastic bag should get you wincing.

Dead Space

The Dead Space series are some of the greatest sci-fi horror games ever made and your enemies will kill you in particularly nasty ways. You’ll be attacked by screaming toddlers and ripped limb-from-limb by acid-vomiting ghouls. It is outstandingly pukesome in places. A lot of people think Dead Space is an attack on Scientology too.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG

Perhaps one of the most tasteless games ever made, this role-player was based on the Columbine tragedy to the point where developers crafted a 16-bit version of the school and rendered MIDI versions of Nirvana songs. The game itself isn’t particularly gruesome, but the set-up certainly is.
