In China, the car of your dreams has legs, a clear complexion, lashing of lipstick and breasts.

But on closer inspection (and, boy, to those car buffs get close) it turns out that the women draped over the motors are not automotive mascots, like Rolls Royce’s wonderful Spirit of Ecstasy. (If you pull these figures (and you will in that car, sir, oh, yes you will) they come right off.)  In China these aides to motoring are called ‘booth babes’. And the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show has banned them.

Some of the babes have been protesting. But the good news is that women can still work in in China’s automotive industry. It’s a question of rebranding. As petrol head Dai Jun (3.2, 2.4, 3.2) says: “I’m not called a ‘model’ here because they banned models this year.” Inded, this year’s Shanghai Auto Show features no mo-dels, but lots of young, female “sales representatives”, “shopping guides”, “stand-attendants”, “Miss Etiquettes” and “car cleaners”.
