Transfer Balls: Liverpool fans branded racist by Raheem Sterling’s people
Time to catch up with Liverpool and England footballer Raheem Sterling. What’s he been up to this summer? How’s the agent? How are the kids and the balloons?
The Sun: “Pack yer bags, Sterling”
LIVERPOOL have told Raheem Sterling he MUST go on the club’s pre-season tour. The Kop rebel missed training yesterday, claiming he was ill, after informing boss Brendan Rodgers he did not want to be considered for the trip to Asia and Australia.
The problem with calling in sick is that if you do it and only secure one day off, you look like a skiver.
Liverpool were set to send a doctor to give Sterling a check-up and the wantaway winger, 20, faces a massive fine if he does not turn up for the four-game trip. He could also be left sweating on a move to Manchester City, who are the only club to make offers for him.
Not quite. Manchester United did make an informal approach.
Now City sources claim they have no immediate plans to meet Liverpool’s £50million asking price.
BBC: “Raheem Sterling: Jamie Carragher fears for Liverpool star’s reputation”
“He’s starting to get a reputation that could be hard to rid himself of in the future,” said Carragher. “Are Man City fans looking at the situation and thinking this could be us in a few years?”
Fair point. But on the pitch, Sterling does what’s asked of him.
“I think this situation will only make Liverpool more determined to get the fee they feel Raheem is worth, rather than caving in to Raheem’s and Man City’s wishes,” added Carragher.
As for Raheem’s reputation, well, the Independent finds it hard to believe anything the player says:
The Indy Liverpool transfer news: Club continue to stand firm as ‘ill’ Raheem Sterling stays away from pre-season training
The Times catches the same case of inverted commas:
‘Sick’ Raheem Sterling told he must join tour
As the Indy and Times place Sterling’s off-games note in the fiction section, the Daily Mirror adds:
“Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling wants transfer BECAUSE of Brendan Rodgers — and would stay under another manager”
‘It’s not me,’ says Raheem Sterling. ‘It’s him.’
Raheem Sterling insists the complete breakdown in his relationship with boss Brendan Rodgers is the reason he wants to quit Liverpool.
Not the money. Not the quality of football. Not the money. It’s all about Brendan Rodgers.
The England international claims Rodgers has continually broken promises to keep conversations private. He is also convinced that it was the club that leaked his conversation with Rodgers about not wanting to go on tour, which the manager denies.
See. He’s not a greedy so-and-so. Poor Raheem is the victim:
Sterling is disappointed with the way some Liverpool fans have treated him on the back of what he sees as a cynical PR campaign by the club against him.
Good job trusty Raheem Sterling would not resort of cynical PR stunts and press briefings.
What do the fans think of it?
The Sun: “Raheem Kops it – Fans’ phone abuse as Sterling’s number is leaked online”
FURIOUS Liverpool fans have been bombarding wantaway star Raheem Sterling with vile abuse after his phone number was leaked online.
Does he answer his own phone? And is he yet blaming Rodgers for that leak?
The forward, linked with a £50million Man City move, has received hundreds of calls, texts and “racist” insults. Some fans posted recordings of calls with the England ace online, while others listed his home address and suggested “smashing the place up”.
Why is “racist” in inverted commas?
A source close to Sterling, 20 said: “The abuse has been borderline racist.”
So Liverpool fans are not racist, then. Who knew that the people who have hymned the names of blacks, Jews and Irish are not bigots. The fans on the phone are idiots. The ‘source close to Sterling’ is despicable.
“These fans have been fed his number by someone. He’ll be changing it soon.”
Well, it’ll most likely have a Manchester prefix…
