ON the front pages of the Mirror, Sun and Star, each time dressed as vampires ready to administer a love bite to anyone close enough, and so create another Jedward clone, the brothers Grimes introduce Halloween.

Simon Cowell’s prayers could be answered – terrible twins John and Edward have been SILENCED by raging sore throats.
If they can’t sing, John & Edward get a pass through to the next round. Happily, Queen’s We Will Rock You is along with YMCA the world’s big semaphore hit and John & Edward can still perform with camping and foot stamping while stood on a large rock.

So it’s a fix. Cowell and Walsh are in an elite club of two that sets the agenda as to who wins their TV show. And you trust the Sun to bring you the facts:
The Sun told this week how the twins scored the highest vote on last weekend’s show, while Simon’s act Danyl finished in the bottom two.
Only they didn’t. Rachel did. John & Edward came nearer the bottom than the top. Is the Sun in on this conspiracy to promote Jedward?

You can hear the editor screaming: “Get me a few hundred words on Jedward fast. A writer gets to work:
WE ARE ALWAYS more anxious to be distinguished for a talent which we do not possess than to be praised for the 15 which we do possess.” Clearly, Mark Twain wasn’t an X Factor devotee, but his words are cannily spot-on when it comes to Dublin twins John and Edward Grimes. Talent – in musical terms anyway – doesn’t ooze from their collective pores, and some critics question whether they have any skills at all, let alone 15 of them.
Spot on, then. One thing we can agree on, and the writer can agree with himself on is this:
Cringey? Yes. Camp? Certainly. But it was so damn watchable, even if you had to peek through your fingers.

WHEN Nick Griffin appeared on BBC TV’s Question Time he spent a considerable effort in putting pen to paper. So often did Nick write that many viewers supposed that he had been brought along to take the minutes.
Mr Griffin may have been unaware that his words can be recorded on video and audio, believing that unless something is written down it cannot be real. Thankfully, Mr Griffin was not forced to tattoo the evidence on his arm and was afforded a piece of paper.

JUST when you thought you’d heard the last of twitchy BNP leader Nick Griffin, up pop the media to tell you that you should be thinking about him.
Before we go on, we have question for Mr Griffin:
If, as you say (we have video evidence), Winston Churchill would have joined the BNP, in what capacity would he have served - as leader or as your subordinate? And if he would have been the BNP’s leader, in what ways would he have made a better leader than you? The Indy sums it up best:

Sky News: “’One In Five Voters Now Considering BNP’”
Shocking news for Sheila and Lucy Cohen to know that one of them or their three grown-up children is a Nazi. But the BNP is all-inclusive (you said that too, Nick.)
More than a fifth of voters would consider voting for the British National Party according to the first opinion poll taken since the controversial appearance of Nick Griffin on Question Time.
Would consider… And then dismiss it?
More than half of those questioned said that they agreed with the BNP, or thought that the party had a point, in wishing to speak up for the interests of the indigenous, white British people which successive governments have done too little to protect.
Into the void created by the mainstream parties’ lack of desire to talk about immigration, race and a media that demonises the white working class steps the BNP.

Today, the white working class has neither political power nor cultural cachet. One consequence of this is that the rest of society sees no reason to hide its distaste when discussing it. In these politically correct times poor whites are just about the only section of society that it is permissible to insult. Sky News: “Disgusting’ Griffin Defends Ku Klux Klan”
Far-right BNP leader Nick Griffin has defended the Ku Klux Klan, attacked Muslims and called gay couples “creepy” in a controversial appearance on BBC’s Question Time.
Were it not for the KKK, Griffin could pass for a tabloid hack voicing off. “JAN MOIR FOR LEADER!”, “BUY THE DAILY EXPRESS!” come the cries from the BNP voting households. Can Griffin recover?
At one point moderator David Dimbleby snapped at the BNP leader for smiling as he struggled to answer a question about his past denial of the Holocaust. He was booed as he attacked Jack Straw’s father for being in jail for not fighting in the war while his own father was serving in the RAF.
Smirking… Snide comments about MPs…We stayed awake for this?
Sky’s chief political correspondent Jon Craig said: “Griffin was exposed on Question Time as a nasty piece of work, with unpleasant views on race, immigration, Islam, homosexuality and Winston Churchill.”

The Guardian: “BNP on Question Time: Lone voice freezes Griffin’s grin”
Nick Griffin was not sitting on the far right of the panel. But if that would have been a cliche too far for Question Time’s producers, Mentorn, there was symbolism enough as the four men and two women took their seats for last night’s recording.
Faced with the BNP, all three mainstream parties, in what had doubtless been the subject of some negotiation by the programme’s producers, were seated squarely to the left of the long, curved desk, with David Dimbleby in the centre acting as a reassuring buffer against any anticipated xenophobic spittle.
Bonnie Greer alone, unelected and hence beyond contamination, sat next to Griffin, though with her elbow nearest to him planted firmly on the desk throughout, one shoulder directed in sniffy contempt.
And her eyebrows ready to fire at will.
The Times: “Audience is outraged as Griffin says Churchill would have joined BNP”
The British National Party’s exposure to a nationwide audience provoked outrage last night as its leader reiterated his claim that Winston Churchill would have joined his party.
And Churchill would have served diligently under leader Nick Griffin. Right, nick? Far right!
BBC: “Griffin attacks Islam on BBC show”
His references to Britain’s “indigenous people” prompted other members of the panel to challenge him to say he meant white people. Mr Griffin said the colour was “irrelevant” and said Mr Straw would not dare go to New Zealand and tell a Maori he was not “indigenous”. “We are the aborigines here,” he claimed

The redoubtable American playwright Bonnie Greer, who refused to look his way, started him off by referencing the new law that would require the BNP to admit non-whites to its membership. “You laugh,” said Ms Greer. “If I was you, I would be scared.” The vision of the policy U-turns a mass influx of Muslims would cause, was such a good joke Mr Griffin even applauded.
She wasn’t joking. If every non-white, Jews, Muslims, Hindu and more join the BNP, the BNP would die.

SMUG bigot Nick Griffin appeared on BBC1’s Question Time last night - after sparking mayhem at Television Centre. At one point the fascist BNP leader, 50, confessed he was “the most loathed man in Britain” among Nazi sympathisers.

Greer said that Churchill’s mother was possibly of Mohawk Indian descent, which made nonsense of the BNP’s ideas on British racial identity. As a history lesson, almost all the panel talked tosh. Winston Churchill, in his own time, possessed the values and racial attitudes of the Victorian aristocracy from which he came, wildly politically incorrect in modern terms.
The Guardian, Aditya Chakrabortty: “Nick Griffin on Question Time: No big gaffes, so he will say it’s a success”
Griffin’s success last night can be defined as follows: neither cabinet ministers nor protesters stopped him from getting on air and there were no punch-ups nor any telltale flashes of temper. For the BNP, those are sufficient grounds to chalk up last night as a victory.

It would have been far better if he were just allowed to rabbit on until even the most alienated builder in Burnley realises that Mr Griffin is unimaginably stupid. Last night’s performance may have created some kind of sympathy for him….

Maybe Mr Griffin couldn’t find a gag writer, or maybe he thought by looking serious and speaking slowly he would be taken seriously. But this tactic was soon in trouble and, suddenly, after 10 minutes he went as giggly as a sixth former…
There was so much ganging up, I was half-reminded of barmy David Icke’s sorry appearance years ago on Wogan in which he elaborated his sci-fi conspiracy theories. It is not easy — it even requires courage — to say the unsayable even when the unsayable is plain wrong. Unfortunately, Mr Griffin — evasive, hair-splitting, his every other answer further proof of bad faith — turned out to be unspeakable. Sympathy for the devil? I think not.

The representative of what’s left of New Labour was Jack Straw, striking absurd Churchillian poses, who was his usual evasive old-line political self. He was outshone by the Tory communities’ spokesman Sayeeda Warsi. But Mr Griffin was the most incoherent and unconvincing.

Instead, Question Time presented the British public with a reborn Alf Garnett with none of the comic satire of Warren Mitchell…His presentation is so lightweight it’s difficult to see him emerging as the leader of a major neo-Nazi force, which is what the political hysterics are predicting.

It was an odd show because almost all of the questions — even the five minutes on gays — were BNP-related, and the entire audience and panel anti-Griffin. Dimbleby, briefed to keep quoting his YouTube nonsenses back at him, risked making him seem a victim. Griffin’s tactic was to grin pudgily and to keep his answers crisper than Jack Straw’s (not difficult). It is never easy for a chairman to come down hard on someone who keeps it brief.

Nobody crashed. Nobody descended into incoherence. All of them — landed with the task of attacking a man who wanted to be attacked — found their own distinct way of doing battle. But nobody dared try what, if it could have been done, would have been the most devastating tactic of all, and perhaps the only tactic that would have done Mr Griffin any real harm: to brush him aside as a small man, enlarged by the anger of his enemies.

Tested on his penchant for Holocaust denial he became a Holocaust-denial-denyer, replying “I do not have a conviction for Holocaust denial” and telling the nation how he couldn’t explain how and in what way he had changed his mind on the Holocaust as he might be prosecuted in France.
On Islam he slipped in a reference to supporting Israel on Gaza, which was unlikely to win the Jewish vote and likely to baffle the BNP vote.
Finally he confided that he thought the BBC to be “part of a thoroughly unpleasant ultra-leftist establishment”, when voters know it best for Strictly Come Dancing. He showed himself to be, not so much a fearful Nazi, as kook.

Professor Groebel says the media also plays its part, being more interested in risky, thrilling stories than moderate ones. On the other hand, he says, to suppress them completely is dangerous because you then have a movement that you cannot control publicly. Can Nick Griffin Say Something Really Offensive And Save The BBC?
MUCH hope in Anorak Towers that Nasty Nick Griffin will live up to the hype and say something truly terrible that makes tuning in worthwhile. But he looks like he might not be up to it. He seems to pathetic.
If Griffin fails to deliver then Question Time will slink back into its late evening slot that has made it an unwatchable show fronted by a smirking BBC host (do they mould these people?) and populated by a bunch of jobbing politicos and a celebrity who is there to cut thought the nonsense and show us just how shit politicians are. Right, kids?
The very future of the BBC depends on Griffin being offensive. But is he up to it?

Jackie [Griffin's wife] pulls no punches when it comes to her husband. The former district nurse later revealed some extraordinary home truths about the couple’s marriage.
“My mother thinks he could do with a damned good slap,’ she confided in me, adding: ‘Nick’s parents taught him that the sun rose and set in his a***. He never had to do anything at home and was told he was always right, he can do everything and he’s wonderful.”
They first met in Suffolk in 1978: she was 15, he was 19 and friends with her sister’s boyfriend.
“Nick was an oddball, never part of the gang,” she says.

After graduating in 1980, Griffin worked full time for the National Front.
“I thought he would grow out of it,” says Jackie. “I was earning money, he wasn’t - what a fool I was.”
The couple married in 1985. Joe Pearce, best man at their wedding, was imprisoned twice for inciting race hatred. The Griffins lived on state benefits for more than a year.
“I worked my a*** off trying to keep us going,’ Jackie moaned. “I’ve been… working to keep us going financially and bring up four children while he’s spent his time playing at stupid politics. To Nick, it’s all a game.’

BNP Leader Nick Griffin Lampoons Himself
NICK Griffin , of the BNP, has not even taken the stand at the BBC’s Question Time and he is already losing his thread. Following the shocking news that war is not a place for extremists, Griffin of the cartoon tells us:
“Those Tory generals who today attacked the British National Party should remember that at the Nuremburg Trials, the politicians and generals accused of waging illegal aggressive wars were all charged — and hanged — together.
“Sir Richard and Sir Mike fall squarely into this bracket, and they must not think that they will escape culpability for pursuing the illegal wars in Iran and Afghanistan… These two gentlemen are Tories who have seen the traditional Conservative vote in the army, from private level up to senior officers, dissolve away and turn into BNP votes”.

The BBC’s Question Time Makes BNP Leader Nick Griffin A Celebrity
HAVING invited BNP leader Nick Griffin to the big Question Time debate, the BBC has achieved its intended goal of getting the media to talk about its show.
Maybe if Question Time can develop its policy of featuring leaders of actual political parties, however odious they are, there will be no need to hire celebrities to sell politics to a slack-jawed audience.
Today’s update comes from former Army generals have written a letter warning that political extremists had no right to share the Armed Forces’ proud reputation.
War is no place for extremists!
The open letter is signed by former heads of the Army, General Sir Mike Jackson and General Sir Richard Dannatt. As Sky News notes:
The move follows the British National Party’s (BNP) tactic of using images of Winston Churchill and wartime insignia during recent European election campaigns.
Remember that picture of the Spitfire? As Anorak noted at the time:
“Battle for Britain,” bellows the legend. That’s a Spitfire soaring thought the skies, strafing the fascist scum. Hurrah! Who says the BNP is not inclusive, it having embraced a Jewish hippy, a far-right American nutter, climate sceptics, anti-fascist fascists, a desk off a corridor in Brussels, break dancers, coppers, Poles, the kids and fools.
The top brass’s letter to the Times goes thus:
“The BNP is claiming that it has a better relationship with the Armed Forces than other political parties. How dare they use the image of the Army, in particular, to promote their policies. These people are beyond the pale.“
Beyond the pale? An unfortunate choice of words, or may an attempt at a pun.
But if the BNP can be easily undone, it is with humour and ridicule. Treat them with the contempt you usually reserve for Labour and the Tories.

Boyzone Give Stephen Gately A Dignity The Media Cannot Handle
STEPHEN Gately is not long dead. The Daily Mail has led the tabloids’ charge to bury him not praise him, peppering a report of the former Boyzone singers early demise with suicide, drugs, depression, domestic violence and his sexuality.
Today the post-mortem will discover if Gately died from being gay, Irish, or whatever else pushed him to the margins of what Mail readers would term ‘decent society’.
Police in Majorca says there were “no signs of suspicious circumstances”.
Which brings us to the Sun’s front-page headline:
“I FOUND STEPHEN PALE AND COLD.”
Well, he can’t get on with everybody, nor be orangey-brown as the Simon Cowell pop factory paints its uniform acts.
It’s turns out that a Georgi Dochev says Gately was pale and cold when he had died. The singer was “very cold and white“.
As front page shockers go, news that a dead body was cold is right up with news that Katie Price sleeps on her back, the Pope has a balcony and the BNP is not keen on immigrants.
But here’s Dochev to deliver his “I was there” moment:
“I almost have not slept since this happened. I found Stephen dead and I woke his husband. I am still nervous and really upset.”
He tells the Sun. As for the background story:
Mr Dochev is believed to have accompanied Gately and his partner, Andrew Cowles, back to the apartment in the resort of Port Andratx in the early hours of Saturday. He confirmed he had spoken to police who are investigating the death.
The tabloids chip away. But there appears to be a quiet dignity surrounding Gately’s death. His former Boyzone bandmates Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch flew out to the scene to pay their respects.
A spokesman tells us:
“All the boys are home now. They went there to pay their respects and start dealing with the fall-out of the situation. However, it’s clear that them being there at the moment is bringing a lot more attention to the situation.”
So they left. They did not announce a comeback your, call for an urgent investigation, speculate on Gately’s state of mind, talk to the media nor grandstand and make themselves the centre of attention. They came. They saw. They left.

Overlooking the obvious reaction that an invitation to insult Ashley Cole is not needed, and that black, white, Nazi or Commie, we can all unite behind a common cause, we read on:
