Do Americans care about this? Well the hysterical, celebrity obsessed LA people might, although on a report I saw on ESPN most of the excited LA fans they interviewed were of Mexican descent (a football mad nation).
Dont worry Simple Simon, most yanks dont even want a crumb of the Beckham pie. He's just here and most dont care, which sums up how 'soccer' is perceived here. It's a game for the kids and very popular with young girls. All my nieces play it, I offered to show one of them how to administer a legal tackle that would leave their opponant on the turf in agony.
Their coach mumbled something about that not being consistant with 'fair play' and the 'spirit of the game'.
"Never watched a Premiership game have you?" I replied, while secretly hoping that Norman Hunter, (remember him?) would stop by and 'bite his legs'.
Ah well.
I'm going to conduct another of my informal surveys of my co workers in a month or so to see if anyone has become a Beckham fan yet. I think I can predict the result. There are far more pressing matters like will Brett Farve be the Packers starting quarterback? Will they trade him? Will the Brewers manage to win a few games? Will the Badgers (University of Wisconsin) stink again this year?
You know, important stuff.

Hey kids, don't bother passing any exams at school, just spend your time kicking a football around and you will become a world famous multi millionaire with a pretty wife and hang out with Tom Cruise and Co.
Or you could pass your exams and then slave away for a pittance for the rest of your life
