Madeleine McCann: Reporting Injunction
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
WHISPERS of an injunction:
That the UK press gets much of its insider information on the McCann case from reading “source says” in the Portuguese press is beyond doubt.
Can the UK press be barred from reporting on these reports?
Scott QC is listed leading for McCann today.
Abdullah Masry v Mona Al Khatib, High Court Family Division, Sumner J (led by Timothy Scott QC) – successful application for an injunction restraining the press generally from publishing stories about the parties and their children (contra mundum order) – application of the court’s jurisdiction in wardship;
As Anorak’s Carmen writes:
If there is an order made which prohibits the British media from reporting on items in the foreign press under the guise of harming Madeleine’s interests, then every tom dick and harry will be trying to repost it on Anorak under ‘freedom of speech banner’ - they may live on the dole in a council flat and be prepared for the contempt of court proceedings, but do you?
Updates to follow…

Morning all.
What time is this court hearing scheduled for?
July 7th, 2008 at 8:32 am
That must qualify as the first sensible 1st for a long time.
We are told it is still listed for today. That could mean any time during the court day which starts at 10.30 a.m. A media-savvied judge would have it done and dusted in time for the lunchtime news.

Who could possibly have knowledge of, or pre-judge, a judicial decision?
A Judge?

brunty on the telly
July 7th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Possibly a bit of both.
I still don’t know what, if any, jurisdiction the High Court has over matters which are within the Freedom of Information legislation.
I can certainly understand that the McCanns would be less than enthralled by the attitude of the Information Tribunal, which is that if information is free it’s free to everybody, but I can’t understand why they think the Family Court has the power to order disclosure by the police…

Are you aware of any injunctions which include the removal of previously published articles?
Is it possible for it to cover ‘facts’ which are already in the public domain?

I don’t have sky - can you please let us know what they are reporting?
July 7th, 2008 at 10:12 am
So let me think, the McCanns have or may have asked the FD to prevent further press coverage or stories in the UK, the FD may have refused this request, the McCanns legals are using the courts position as nominated guardians under WOC, to have as is the law, the court explain the decision in public court.

The Sun (I know, I know!)
THE mum of missing Madeleine McCann has made a tearful call to a holidaymaker who reported a man acting suspiciously before her daughter disappeared.
Paul Gordon, 32, said a “creepy” man asked him for cash when he was staying in Praia da Luz, Portugal, last year.
The man approached him when he was renting the flat from where Madeleine, then three, was snatched the next week.
Kate McCann, 40, begged him to give his evidence to the Spanish private investigators probing the case for her.
But the brewery manager, of Fareham, Hants, said no as he had already spoken to police.
Portuguese cops have refused to release Mr Gordon’s e-fit of the man, saying it may prejudice a future court case.
Meanwhile lawyers for Kate and husband Gerry, 39, of Rothley, Leics, will try to force British cops to release their information on Maddie at London’s High Court today.

Just as well this did all happen in Portugal - this would be interfering with a potential crown witness in the UK.

you’re not serious???
So just as we might start to get some information - the McC’s might (sucessfully) try and stop it being published.
How would that happen re: foreign news outlets? and would we be able to comment on it on anorak?

Unbelievable!
I think you’re barking up the wrong tree nosey.
Sad but typical!

Yes, what did they do to Maddie - good point to bring up jo. Other parents have had children abducted and have not gone to these lengths like the Mcs had.

Good morning, Gandolf.
This article is from August 07. I’ve read somewhere [don't ask for a link, please, but I distinctly remember] that Mr. Smith recognised GM when he saw him on television, carrying one of the twins when they landed back in the UK in September 07.

Mornign all. Great weekend - what a tennis match!
So, are we courting trouble talking about todays events?
M and A
Possibly, we’ll see what emerges… but not necessarily todays events, it means there may be a gagging order on the whole saga. Of course that works two ways, no more Clarrie and and no more Gerry and Kate, which can only be blissful
