Whining And Dining

Petrus Whining And Dining‘“OF course we paid the bill and didn’t make a stink, but what is up with this?”

Petrus diners hear about Oddbins’ 2-for-1 deal on Jacob’s Creek

This is the lament of Sandra Mitchell, who dined with her husband at Petrus, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Knightsbridge.

The Telegraph reports that trouble started when they ordered a £160 bottle of Château Margaux, which the sommelier dismissed as too fruity.

Instead, he suggested an earlier vintage for their anniversary meal.

All was well until the bill arrived, and they discovered that the 1966 bottle cost £800. And it wasn’t even signed by Bobby Moore.

The restaurant is of course no stranger to stories about large bills.

Six bankers famously spent £44,000 on a meal there, including £12,300 on a single bottle of 1947 Château Pétrus.

The Mitchells have been offered a full refund or another meal by the restaurant, and this time the head sommelier will be choosing the wines.

We hope he will teach these impertinent cheapskates a lesson, and recommend an amusing little claret from Oddbins - £5.99 a bottle, or £60 a case.

Goes well with red meat, we’re told.’
