GILL HORNBY (Daily Telegraph): “All eyes were on Sarah Palin at the Republican convention, but the changing expressions on John McCain’s face told the real story.”

McCain’s expression can change? You have to really stare hard…

First the smug, paternal pride as he unveiled his debutante, followed by the delighted astonishment as she wowed the crowd, and then the hurt bafflement at the mute, flat response he himself received. What did it remind you of?

Kermit and Miss Piggy? Little and Large? Rocky & Bullwinkle? You can stop guessing. The question, it turns out, is rhetorical:

Exactly: the relationship of the Prince and Princess of Wales, compressed into a week.

What happens at the end of the week? She meets an Arab playbvoy and goes on holiday? He meets an older woman?

Poor John McCain. He’s already past the “I say, didn’t one choose well” phase and is now well into the “Hey, don’t forget about one!” part. And this time, divorce really is not an option.

So how does it end? Gulp!
