Casino: How To Wynn In Macau

ALWAYS good when doing business in foreign lands to know the cultural nuances. Better yet to know them and adhere to them.

So here’s billionaire casino developer Steve Wynn speaking at the Charles Schwab IMPACT 2007 conference. Wynn is the chief executive of Wynn Resorts, which operates a casino-resort in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau.

As he said, and as the Associated Press reported it: “That imbecile Mao Zedong almost ruined that country.”

Wynn went on to clarify his remarks, saying: “I said the Cultural Revolution almost ruined the country. It was imbecilic. I didn’t call him an imbecile, I said it was imbecilic.”

Am I first? What an honour

  2. 2 Albert Hurwood Says:

100/1 he’s not around for long!
The chines don’t like criticism of their regime!

    2 Albert Hurwood

Bounced back and continues to tussle with Kirk Kerkorian, so the Chinnese shouldn’t be a problem.

    ****** NAME DROPPING ALERT ******

Never met Wynn or Kerkorian but spent about 12 hours in the company of Jackie Gaughan playing poker and chatting.

  6. 6 Will Says:

Jackie regularly plays in a very small spread limit game at his El Cortez casino ($20 minimum buy-in). This is despite him being 87. It is quite an experience as his mind often appears to wander and it sometimes seems he doesn’t know whether he is in the hand or not. He orders a glass full of cherries and olives on sticks and then offers them around. I have to say although he is in his 80’s I did accept the cherries despite the fact I hate them.

Jackie is a Vegas legend and is only too happy to discuss the history of Vegas - Maybe an Anorak interview (would be happy to assist ;-) ) is in order. More info can be found at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Gaughan

A joke I heard in the El Cortez was ‘He may have had people buried in the desert, but has long forgotten’. Not sure on the accuracy of that joke but I do have to say I doubt I have ever met a man with such a presence, not at all intimadatory, quite the opposite in fact, very warm, assured and easy going.

  7. 7 eyewitness Says:

Wynn has now offended the only people who will play in his casinos. By far the the most poorly managed casino company around. China was their last hope because their Las Vegas team is made up of trainees in top positions with no knowledge of the casino industry. The president at the Las Vegas property is running the place into the ground. The Las Vegas property is now the king of poor management and what NOT to do. They will probably start to show profit losses in Las Vegas soon. Macau was the cash cow and now more than likely all that Chinese money will be gambled and invested elsewhere. Wynn was a name associated with class and professional management, beautiful hotels and a fortune 500 best place to work. Now it is the joke of the casino industry. Wynn’s legacy will not be volcanos and fountains. He will be the man that unionized table games employees, ruined all potential for a new company and proved Bobby Baldwin was always behind his success. Sad and pathetic.
