Polar Bears Take Manhattan And Britain Drowns
THE WWF says we are going to start swimming earlier than expected. Say the nature wrestlers:
Arctic sea-ice in September 1979 and 2007, showing the biggest reduction since satellite surveillance began.
Or as the Telegraph puts it:
Climate change is happening much faster than the world’s best scientists predicted and will wreak havoc unless action is taken on a global scale, a new report warns.
On the other side of the debate is the news that the Alaskan ice is growing.

Polar Bears Can Hear Mother Nature’s Screams
POLAR Bear Watch: Anorak’s look at polar bears in the news…
IN California, scientists are testing the hearing of polar bears “to try to find out whether the noises associated with melting Arctic ice could affect their ability to survive”.
In the wild, polar bears live in one of the quietest places on Earth. For much of the time, the Arctic is a bitterly cold, silent world.
But global warming is changing that. Ice, which is crucial to the bears’ survival, is disappearing and people are moving in.
“We’re expecting industrial activity, shipping, recreation, all of those human activities to increase in the Arctic,” says Dr Ann Bowles, a senior research scientist at Hubbs-Seaworld Research Institute in San Diego.
“We’re going to be bringing noise and activity much closer to these guys. What we’re trying to do is help to protect the bears during this period of transition,” she says.

Knut The Polar Bear On Suicide Watch
POLAR Bear Watch: Anorak’s look at polar bears in the news…
KNUT, the German polar bear the Guardian calls an “activist” for global warming, is alive. But his former keeper is not. Thomas Doerflein has died.
THE INDEPENDENT reports: “Love story: Knut mourns his keeper”. Or as the experts put it:
Berlin Zoo yesterday categorically ruled out suggestions that Knut would experience feelings of loss as a result of his keeper’s passing. “It won’t be a problem for him,” said Klaus Lüdcke, a Berlin zoologist, “Knut has been looked after by a whole team – and for him the most important person is the one who brings the food.”
And Doerflein: “He said that he could wish the bear no better first-birthday present than permanent separation.”

POLAR Bear Watch: Anorak’s look at polar bears in the news…
The tall mannequin beneath the polar bear head wore a tattered flannel shirt and dirty pants. Some onlookers said it was there for several hours, peering into the trash can at 14th and Irving streets Northwest until someone called police at 10 a.m.
Polar bears are upon us. Did he speak German? Says the Washington Post:
“It’s a suspicious package,” police spokespeople declared.
So in came the bomb squad and all the precautions of a post-Sept. 11 world.
