Susan Boyle To Sing At Olympics Opening Ceremony
SUSAN Boyle. More Nominative Determinism. And when she becomes famous look out for her becoming Sue - and they always do.
In the Times, Andrew Billen was watching the telly:
The fat lady who sang and became a star overnight on Saturday’s series-three premiere was Susan Boyle, a West Lothian spinster who said that she had never been kissed (“Shame,” she said, without a trace of self-pity.) She was 47 going on 57, had hair like a crow’s nest, and wanted to be Elaine Paige. The audience guffawed. But then to increasing incredulity and mounting applause, she sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables. She possessed a voice of breathtaking tunefulness and confidence.
Not only fat but tuneful. If Team GB is looking for a woman to voice the strumpet who’ll take centre stage at Olympics 2012 (eat yer heart our China, our girls post-puberty and topless), Susan Boyle’s yer girl.

And now Billen puts a Boyle’s singing performance in perspective:
[Piers] Morgan called it the greatest surprise of his three years on the show. [Amanda] Holden called it the greatest wake-up call ever. Simon Cowell, who is a very witty man, said he knew from the moment she walked on the stage… There was some kind of Shrek moral going on here, a corrective to our appearance-besotted age. If Susan Boyle had not existed, the Noughties would have had to invent her to prevent the decade from crashing into its own looking glass.
Says Andrew Billen in his, er, eponymous column; words that would have have been used for Our Jade Goody…

Congratulations Susan!!!
The world was ready to laugh at you, now we should all be feeling humble and ashamed that we prejudged such remarkable hidden talent. Your voice and performance brought tears to my eyes.

What an inspiration! For anyone who has been overlooked and passed by on first glance, this is for you! A true talent who has humbly gone about her unassuming life when she finally gets her “chance.” An average woman with an exceptional talent who is ready to make her mark. She isn’t affected by those around her rolling their eyes and laughing as they expect her to fail miserably. She does what she came to do - to rock us all. She rocks the audience. They sit with mouths open as their preconceived notions of her are laid bare.
She inspires me to look and try to find the gifts within others. Whether it be an executive, police officer, student or physically or mentally challenged individual working a menial job. They are there to do what they came to do. I have heard it before - never judge a book by its cover. I won’t.

It was a jaw-dropping performance….so refreshing and wonderfully appreciated by the audience! The doubters got their come-uppance. When did the world decide that physical beauty and talent are interchangeable? This lady showed us her beautiful soul with her gift of song!! Spectacular!!!

Dear Susan, What an inspiration you are! Look everyone of us could use some kind of makeover so pay little attention to any of those silly comments. You have an enormously beautiful voice and the heart that makes one sit up and take notice. Thank you for allowing yourself to be heard. Brilliant!

It’s amazing. Her singing moves you and comes from the heart. it brought tears to my eyes as her singing reflected feelings that I feel but don’t know how to say it or put it into words. And it comes from someone you can trust who is from an ordinary (and at the same time difficult) walk of life.
