Susan Boyle Sings In Her Garage
SUSAN Boyle might be a product of nominative determinism, but she becoming all things to all pundits.
Hereunder is a collection of thoughts on Boyle, and what a plain woman singing a song on a TV talent show can mean to those with space to fill:
A words first from Miss Boyle:
Susan, 48, told the Daily Mirror: “They say that television makes you look fat and it certainly did. “I looked like a garage. It was mortifying to see and a bit of a shock. I didn’t realise I could reduce people to tears and I hope it wasn’t because of that” – What’s On TV
What does Susan Boyle mean to you?:
Susan Boyle’s story and performance embodies the entire concept around marketing and advertising’s transformation to become entirely transparent and authentic – Star Tribune
The Good Boyle:
Susan Boyle’s story is a parable of our age – Colette Douglas Home, The Herald
Britain’s got sob stories:
She is a veteran of abuse. She was starved of oxygen at birth and has learning difficulties as a result. At school she was slow and had frizzy hair. She was bullied, mostly verbally - Colette Douglas Home, The Herald
We’re all Susan Boyle now:
But it doesn’t matter. In the chocolate box of life there’s a flavour to suit everyone on BGT . It’s an annual event in patriotism without ever being embarrassing or jingoistic – Sue Carroll, Daily Mirror
Boyle on the bum:
Susan Boyle Inspires on Britains Got Talent 2009 - An unassuming 47 year old Susan Boyle wowed the judges with her performance in the auditions for the latest season of Britains Got Talent, singing “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables… More than 130 years later, “huge sores” still litter the world, and Hugo’s words still describe the undying message of his novel – Broadway World
Noughty Susan:
If Susan Boyle had not existed, the Noughties would have had to invent her to prevent the decade from crashing into its own looking glass - Andrew Billen, The Times

I FELT SUCH PEACE WHEN SUSAN BOYLE SANG AND IT MADE ME CRY, TO THINK THIS WOMAN AT HER AGE NEVER HAD A LIFE EXCEPT TO TAKE CARE OF HER MOTHER. I WATCHED HER AT 23, SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. GOD GAVE HER A VOICE. WHEN THEY LAUGHED AT HER THEN HEARD HER VOICE THEY WERE AMAZED THAT SUCH A FACE COULD PRODUCE SUCH BEATY OF A VOICE. GOD BLESS HER. SHES CUTE AND HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR. I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LAUGHED AT SON WHO IS SLIGHTLY RETARED. HOW HATEFUL PEOPLE ARE.

I can honestly say that I have NEVER voted for any of the these shows. Not even the sleb ones that I watch. How amused I was when so many were outed as ‘cheating’.
and I never enter the stupid tv prog competitions….. grrrr.
All designed to take money from those who can least afford it.

…the simplicity is…these freak shows offer no real opportunity…except to the celebrities and t.v. companies to make money from poverty and belief in a bent reality..
My advice … don’t vote and save your money for playing on the National Lottery….

The Cabinet Office today publishes a report on research showing that ” we are still even further away from an opportunity society than in the 70’s”. T
The main route to success not being merit but how well off your parents are and who they know….
So I guess these “Talent” Shows at least have some purpose….in making the impressionable believe that they can beat the system and get to the top….if only they can impress impressarios like Simon Crowell or get the nod from noddies like Piers Moregone they can be “made men” too.
The only reality is that these shows and their double chinned judges make money from from the gullible that pay to vote on them and make freaks out of the foolish faithful that believe their talent can get them to the top by appearing on them as fodder.
As the recession deepens , I expect to see a homeless mother breast feeding her whole family ,served up as entertainment on BGT…..whilst the Judges condescendingly cry…” That was wonderful…it nearly brought a tear to my eye…”
Les Miserables indeed.

Thanks for the information on Michelle McManus, C&C. I genuinely thought she had dropped below the radar entirely. I suppose that even if her music is being sold from stallls alongside Jimmy Shand reels (on cassette) and spoken word albums by 70’s cop show stars, then she’s still living the dream. Even if she’s a jobbing singer doing ad work, then she’s still earning a crust.
I cannot watch BGT myself. From the constant time-filling montages to the bombastic music to the disturbing vignettes of the judges trying to do hilarious party games of the kind that would elevate It’s A Knockout to the zenith of highbrow entertainment by comparison - it appals me.
I remember the bad old days of 70’s variety and ’star search’ shows. For every Jim Davidson, we had to endure a…well, a Jim Davidson usually. Cowell and those who ape him are destroying the fabric of television; and because I can’t force my offspring to wear headphones when she watches this tripe, then I have to don some myself just so I’m not screaming “What? Another f*cking montage? Already?!” every five minutes.
Honestly, we’ll have The Good Old Days back soon if we’re not careful. Is that what you want, people? Is it? Is it?

Phew, sanity at last!
I’ve just come from the other thread where I nearly did a Percy puke.
I saw BGT and thought she was quite good but I can’t believe some of the comments I’ve read.

Percy… I never watch reality shows that use ‘real’ people. I quite like watching slebs make idiots of themselves as they know what to expect.
I tuned in to BGT this week because I’d heard about Susan Boyle but thats it. Pop Idol, X Factor…… not so much Reality TV as Cruelty TV.
IMO of course!!

The one thing these t.v. talent shows is good at is overkill….especially of the talent of the judges . …but as long as the punters keep phoning in….these freak shows keep cashing in…..and the only real winners are Simon Crowell, Piers Morgone and Amanda Holdem. I would love to hear these three sing for their supper…so I could project some of my Hughie Green at the T.V. screen.

The one thing the internet is good at is Overkill and Overkill pis*ses lots of people off and can have an adverse effect.
Why not just let the woman enjoy her moment of glory in all its innocence. I hope they don’t ruin her with an over-the-top makeover.
PS Michelle McManus has lost over 11 stone and is working on a new album. Good luck to her also.

….. I’ll drink to that….

(I submitted a similar comment to the following in the wee small hours but it appears to have been swallowed up by SQL errors/high traffic from Amerkanistan)
Did one of the freaks in the early stages surprise you lot? Do you see her as an underdog, fighting the triumphal hegemony of the beautiful people? Will you spend the money you need to keep yourself - to vote for her - even though that only really serves to ease Cowell’s life as a lazy impresario? I understand she is a dowdy songbird, albeit one with a beautiful trill.
Why do you do this? Do you miss the freak shows of the unenlightened half of the last century? Do you long to hear cover versions of songs that can be obtained in their original form in a myriad of formats? Are you the powerless, absorbing yourselves in the minutiae because true power is outside your reach?
Lastly, how is Michelle McManus doing these days. Caveat emptor. Even here, even where you feel you are doing some good. Caveat emptor…always.

Susan Boyle is a great person plus the fact she has an amazing voice.
She honor her parents and God gave her a divine voice. Susan meant “HOPE ” to me. It surely encourages a lot of people not to stop what they do best in life and with this talent that a person has, Glory to God.
