The Big Chill, Wanky Balls And Other Wikipedia News In The Indepedent

THE Big Chill Festival began life as the Wanky Balls festival in North London, possibly in a teenager’s draughty bedroom. Kat Arney spots this gem of news in the Independent on Saturday and notes that the story is rooted in bit of bollocks on Wikipedia.

The Top 20 Children On Album Covers, A Wikipedia Special

Looks like someone’s been having a bit of childish fun editing the page – and also that someone at the Independent should check their facts a bit better.

Well, so it says on the web…

Manic Street Preachers Rock Hammersmith: Photos

THE Manic Street Preachers secret gig photos show Nicky Wire working the nautical theme and, James Dean Bradfield in Anorak’s own-brand Comfi-Slax (for the full-figured rocker). The Hammersmith Working Men’s Club in west London was packed like it was 1926 and there were people who actually went to working men’s clubs. The revolution, however, can wait until the Manics’ new album ‘Postcards From a Young Man’ is fully plugged…

Is that the greatest line ever written in music press? CANorak, Anorak’s music mag, thinks it might be.

You can hear Linc on “BBC Lincolnshire Introducing but also on 6 Music’s Huw Stephen’s show”.

Six Music was in line to be canned not so long ago in what turned out to be Whispa experiment in PR.

Palestinian Music Fans Ban Bony M’s Rivers Of Babylon

TO Ramallah, where Bony M are being refused the right to play one of their biggest hits. Take them away to captivity:

When the iconic 1970s disco group Boney M rocked Ramallah this week, the local music festival prevented the band from performing one of its biggest hits.

Lead singer Maizie Williams said Palestinian concert organizers told her not to sing “Rivers of Babylon.” The song’s chorus quotes from the Book of Psalms, referring to the exiled Jewish people’s yearning to return to the biblical land of Israel.

Palestinians often question the Jewish historical connection to the Holy Land. Organizers said they asked for the song to be skipped, deeming it “inappropriate.”

Status Quo Record Anthem For Badly Equipped British Army: Photos

WE went to see Status Quo record the video to their new re-release of their song In the Army Now with the 4 Riffles at their Kiwi Barracks in Bulford, Wiltshire. Before you snort and piss on the dying embers of an ageing rock band, know that it’s all for charity. The British Forces Foundation and Help For Heroes will benefit. If you say it’s rubbish, then you dishonour our Boys and Girls.

Says Francis Rossi: “It seemed like the right time to do this. The release is intended to show our support for allied forces around the world, but in particular, of course, the British armed forces. We want people to celebrate what they do, say thank you and also support this vital charity.”

The song is about being ill equipped for battle. As such, it should be the anthem for the British Army…

In Pictures: Eminem Plays T In The Park, Edinburgh

EMINEM was not 50 minutes late for his T In The Park show because he declined to walk across the mud from his tour bus. He was late because he couldn’t find hovercraft, a helicopter or a small child to carry him.

T In The Park organiser Geoff Ellis explains:

“It wasn’t [Eminem’s] doing – there was a piece of equipment that wasn’t ready. He was ready to come on, and so were his band, but unfortunately the stage manager said that we had to keep waiting five minutes, then five more minutes. Luckily though, we didn’t have to cut any of the set.”

Lorraine Martin from Swords jumped in and scored a mud beard, Fatboy Slim looked like someone’s dad with his album collection. Jay-Z’s marketing company made it rain. And Ezra Koenig of the Vampire Weekend was mistaken for Joe Jonas, albeit without the purity ring…

Silver Clef Awards In Pictures: Muse, Smoking Pipes And JLS

A GEISHA-faced Sharon Osbourne hosted the Silver Clef awards ceremony which aims to raise money for the Nordoff Robbins charity, helping the sick and disabled with music therapy.

The top awards went to Muse, who turned it down last year. This time they accepted; and bassist Chris Wolstenholme smoked a pipe outside the Park Lane Hilton. There are not enough pipes at large. Old Mr Anorak’s pal Iowahawk has one but too few others. A trend may be born.

The winners:

JAMES Blunt rose into the air in a plane to sing at 42,000 ft and beat the world record for the highest gig ever. He might also beat the record for the number of air passengers being sick into an acoustic guitar. Both records are currently held by passengers aboard the flight where the captain played Lionel Richie’s Hello over the PA system.
