Poldraw Plagiarism At Private Eye
OVER at Private Eye, they are using Poldraw’s images in a new and exciting way:
Regular readers of this blog, from what in internet terms probably is classed as “days gone by,” will remember a post I did on plagiarism and such in January this year. The latter part of it had an example of rather spectacular tracing of one of my cartoons by a Private Eye cartoonist.
One thing is for certain. The offending cartoonist doesn’t read this particular blog, because she’s been at it again in a cartoon for the latest issue - in an equally shameless manner. Coincidentally she’s copied a cartoon I did of Obama published in The Times on the same day as I posted the aforementioned post!
Spot the difference?

Chenier,
There is a, obvious world of difference between inspiration and blatant copying - the former is of course what Morten was and is talking aboout the latter is what the plagiarist did to his work.

Chenier,
I still defy any cartoonist to cast he first stone when it comes to ‘inspiration’ and inadvertent copying of other people’s work. It can happen to anyone, and it will have happened to most.
This particular case was not about that.
It was about tracing, and back in January I used it as an extreme, almost laughable example of copying to round of a post on the wider subject of plagiarism.
There is nothing accidental or coincidental about tracing.
There might be other reasons of course - like desperation and panic. Neither of those justify it, but can explain why people do it.

Er, back in January Poldraw was defying any cartoonist to cast the first stone, having confessed himself to an inadvertent copying of another cartoonist’s masterpiece. What happened to once is accident, twice is coincidence, thrice is enemy action?
Of course, he could always call in the GMC…

Man oh man. This stuff just is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Looking at your original; the way Obama’s head is slightly turned, the stripe tie, etc. — all points to a blatant copy. No real pro cartoonist would ever want to do this. It just boggles me. One thing for sure: her editor deserves a wake up call about this.
Why don’t you send this copying cartoonist a bill for developing the original cartoon concept for her?

Spot the difference? Easy… one is black and one isn’t.
