Not quite sure where in my previouse post you concluded that I said buying furniture was evidence of a downward spiral. I merely used it to illustrate the fact that we are dealing with people for whom normal fiscal rules do not apply and giving a million or so to charity is relatively speaking no great sacrifice. Bill is on the other hand giving virtually all of his fortune away unlike Sam Walton of Walmart fame who left his kids consistently amongst the Forbes 10 richest people in the world. While we are on the subject of making rash judgements. I was in IT for 30 years and I was in right at the beginning before Microsoft. If you think its bad now you should have seen it then. A proliferation of incompatable hardware and operating systems. He standardise the industry and the only reason you can buy cheap high quality software now is directly down to Microsoft. He effectively turned computers from expensive strange boxes run by techno nurds in back offices to domestic appliances available to all. You'll be glad to hear that with the advent of Cloud computing MS's days are probably numbered but trust me as a professional developer I can tell you the world has a lot to thank Microsoft for.

Can we stop this now and agree to disagree? After all who really gives a crap what we think anyway?

Of course we can agree to disagree. I would note that, as a question of fact, it was apparently closer to $14,000,000 than a puny $1,000,000.
And I still hate Microsoft.

Whether or not she is going nuts I suppose is a subjective opinion. She is a child of the media and as such my only view is from afar. People who live by the media can die by the media and I don't think the signs are looking good.

As far as philanthropy is concerned. You are talking about a pair who recently and very publicly dropped $500,000 on two accent chairs and a coffee table. I am not decrying the gesture but frankly I am more impressed with a Walmart checkout girl who gives 10 bucks to Save the Children. If you want to see a real philanphropists in action look to the Gates foundation. His full time job is now giving away as much of his (and Warren Buffets) fortune as possible. Apparantly the only thing he's leaving his kids is a 10 million trust fund each. Yes I know, would that we all had a 10 million trust fund but its all relative. The foundation earns that in a day.

-------------
You still haven't given any examples of the behaviour you regard as being indicative of a downwards spiral, unless you regard buying furniture as one.
It's an interesting thought. The arts have always depended on the patronage of wealthy people, but you seem to object to wealthy people paying large sums for contemporary furniture. Would it be different if it were Chippendale? Are old works of art acceptable in a way in which modern pieces are not?
I suggest, however, that you refrain from citing Bill Gates as an object of admiration. There isn't a philanthropic gesture in the world sufficient to repay inflicting Microsoft on us.

Not quite sure what you mean? They may have a lot of kids but with their millions their kids are hardly to quote Bacon "impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief." I am If you want another example of a media created nut case - Tom Cruise.

You haven't provided any reasons why you believe that Anjelina Jolie is going down the same path as Michael Jackson or, indeed, Tom Cruise.
As far as I am aware, neither of those individuals has donated all the income from the pictures of their new arrivals to childrens' charities.

If you ask me she is going down the same route as Michael Jackson. A completely nuts self proclaimed deity. She'll be healing the sick by the laying on of hands next. Mind you its our fault. We idolise and give millions to often unremarkable people who's entire skill set consists of being good at impersonating other people and we wonder why sometimes they go a bit peculiar.

Unwise to offer up hostages to fortune quite so freely. Perhaps you should think about providing some examples of why you believe whatever it is you believe.
