Are you acting as the Sao Paolo branch of the Northumberland tourist board by any chance?

That was a pretty good sales pitch for Alnwick Castle; surely you must be on some sort of commission.

I last visited Alnwick many moons ago, and can thoroughly endorse JB's enthusiasm for the place. In the grounds of the castle lies the remains of a Roman fort, where you can sit on one of the communal toilets and contemplate the view across the valley.

Keeping in theme with Torri's mention of 'Most Haunted', there is a wine shop on the steep main street that has bottles in the window that have remained untouched for many a long year. It is thought that there is a curse on them, and that to touch or move them will incur fatal consequences. The last one (or was it two?), to do so dropped down dead beside the display - circa 18th century I believe!

Hi Anorak,
Yes, that`s right he is NOT Mandela but it was only around 20 years ago that Mandela was called a "terrorist" by a British government. Over the years attitudes and politics change.

Evil suceeds over good because people(and governments) sit back and do nothing. In PC Britain anything may be possible down the road.Memories are often short but there is always plenty of political whitewash that can be splashed around when it suits any ruling government.

Hi Anorak,
Dr. John Sentamu the archbishop of York has voiced his opinion that action should be taken against the wicked dictatorship of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe.

He is right, and the policy of the British government of letting African countries "sort out their own problems" is not acceptable when so many lives are being ruined in Zimbabwe. So when have African leaders "sorted out" their own backyard?

Sentamu was himself kicked out of Uganda years ago by another black dictator Idi Amin, and has a sharp perpective of abuses of human rights in Africa.

I find it an amazing contrast to think that in PC Britain you cannot say anything without someone complaining and trying to shut you up but PC attitudes promoted in the UK clearly don't apply to Africa. Its all double standards and those who seriously abuse power get away with it because gutless immoral goverments sit back and offer only words rather than action.

John Sentamu states that Mugabe is a "racist" and its good to hear a black citizen like Sentamu speak out from in his position as the archbishop of York and give exposure to Zimbabwe and yet another African leader who has abused power.

So in 50 yeqars from now will someone want to put a statue of Robert Mugabe in Trafalgar Square? From what's happening in the UK nothing would surprise me !

Hi Anorak,
In the news recently a variety of tourist attractions were mentioned. Some famous sights actually disappointed some visitors(Stonehenge) being one of them.
It was Alnwick castle, in Northumberland,England, that came out TOP in a popularity "must see" poll.

So what is so special about Alnwick you might wonder? Well, this magnificent border fortress dates back to the 11th century and is situated about 39 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne.It was restored by Robert Adams in the mid 19th century and has a beautiful riverside setting that was landscaped bya Capability Brown.

Alnwick is the home of the Duke of Northumberland, the Percy family, the largest landowners in the county. They have lived there since 1309.Additional to the great history of the castle, visitors can also see one of the largest privately owned art collections in the country. The paintings include works by Titan,Van Dyke and Caneletto.
You will also have the opportunity to see an equisite collection of Meissen China.

A wonderful place to visit with friends or family, and as you enjoy your visit you can have a good cup of tea in the tea room, buy gifts, or have lunch or dinner in a restaurant.

The castle is open daily from April 5th until October 29th to visitors.

Yes,the are many castles in the UK ,and Alnwick can be a great escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life as you walk around the old walls and stairs and let your imagination open up to life in centuries past.

Regards,

Your posting raises some interesting points about heir apparent Gordon Brown. Whilst a student he was well documented as having very strident attitudes in regard to -how to milk the welfare state.
The young Blair wanted to be a pop star and in his grown up state? Well...err..err...I geuse he wants to be a pop star or the like.
What about mature M Brown?....umm....ummm...I geuse he wants to...lets be polite,...expand the user base of the welfare state.

Hi Anorak,
Politician Gordon Brown looks like becoming the British prime minister when Tony Blair walks out of No.10.Many people think that in terms of ability that he really isn't up to the job of being the nations leader. I agree.
Back in 1997,Brown made some powerful statements about Britains young people and said that"it was totally unacceptable to allow so many youths to live wasted lives in a modern Britain"
Ten years later, the situation far from being improved by government action is actally FAR worse, as at least a MILLION young people are not in employment or education. They spend their time lazing in bed, hanging around with buddies or gangs on hellish housing estates, wheeling and dealing in drugs,or knocking back pints at the local boozer or endless hours potting the balls at the snooker club while smoking joints until later in the night.
In between all of this, lots of the young lads are getting thousands of young girls pregnant and then they often both become dependent on a lifestyle that revolves around living off social security and hanging out on the streets because their families and family bonding is very weak.Their lives have no real focus.

How I wonder can Brown and Blair really be taken seriously about organising a democratic Iraq when back in England a million youth are wasting their lives and the British government are clueless about a plan to produce a massive raising of standards that is badly needed by British youth.Brown's 1997 words were all hot air and that's the problem with politicians....BIG on talk but a joke at getting results!

Regards,

I agree, John. However, any person in the public's eye lives their life and personal life in a goldfish bowl! Have no envy for any of them!

Frankly, I always felt those two young Princes might have had half a chance to grow up normal ordinary boys, albeit they are royalty, if it hadn't been for the press. Look at the trash that is written about their parents over the years; trash and outright ugliness re rumours of Prince Harry and who his father might have been but isn't. Then William and Kate seemed to have a normal young modern day's romance and living together, laughing and enjoying each other. But the press couldn't let well enough alone...hounding them; speculations; at times when they were just after her on the streets for pictures you could see the fright on her face. Maybe that is not the reason they broke up but you can bet it sure added to it! I never have been able to understand why Prince Charles has taken all that ugly crap dumped on him over these many years. Royal duties or no royal duties, I would have told them where to shove it and left that country years ago.

Yes, the Brazilian women are beautiful, John. When I read your letters on here I do have to smile to myself thinking what a 'chore' it must be for you to lay on the beach or sit in a chair and watch those lovelies go bye! Aww the life of a fine British Gentleman you must live! From an objective point of view mind you, there is no one more charming that a British Gentleman when he puts the charm on!

Best to you!

Hi Cheryl,
Whatever the reason was for the split between William and his girlfriend its almost cerainly a blessing for her. Marrying into the royal family is to enter into a personal nightmare. An exclusive social cage.
A recent photo showed William in a photo with a brazilian girl(taken in a London club?) Its on the Anorak site and his hand is clearly over her breast when the picture was taken. Even when a man is semi-pissed he knows where to put his hands and its not on a breast when a photo is taken.
That brazilian girl is you might like to know very ordinary in her appearance compared to the beauties in Brazil.
Cheryl, I have a relative in Canada(david)who is William's double in appearance. The only difference is that David is slightly taller than William.

William? A very pleasant young man and I hope he doesn't spend his life being trap in this royal family brainwashing nonsense. His life should be in the REAL world.....that would bring him much more happiness.

Best from Brazil,

JOHN BLAKE

Maybe they may make up for Cheryl, and oust Bush and Blair.

Well, surely the couple involved had a say in the break up of their relationship, or could have put some energy into it , if it mattered so much to them. Who can tell why some relationships last and some fail, but if strong enough from within, can stand the blasts from without.

All 'potential' marriages are happy, reality can end the honeymoon sooner rather than later

One can only stand in awe of the power of the Press. They can bring down a President; expose corporate and government scandals; destroy members of the Parliment; ruin many a marriage with a stroke of the pen. Their power is endless.

Has one seen their fine hand at work again? They caused indirectly the death of the young Princes' beloved mother and now have they been the cause of the loss of a potentially happy royal marriage based on love instead of Royal command.
