One of the curiosities of news coverage is it's seemingly one-way interest direction.

The Euro kids, simply missing, accidentally burned to death or worse, murdered, in far flung remoter parts of the world. The Australian Outback seems to attract its fair share of negative publicity.

It works the other way too:
Australia's second city, Melbourne, is caught up with the tale of it own missing 21-year-old backpacker. A Croatian police statement that they are "looking for a girl and not a body" headlines in all of today's Oz newspapers.

    Picture: The Age

Britt Lapthorne, above, went missing in Dubrovnik, Croatia on September 18 and, in the reverse of so many, European missing/lost/murdered tales her brother, Darren, and father, Dale, are now in the country desperately seeking clues to what has happened to their loved one, last seen in the Fuego nightclub in the city.

Croatian police say the son of the owner of the Dubrovnik hostel where Britt was staying was released after 36 hours of questioning but was not a formal suspect.

At least she's safe from crocodiles

OJ Simpson's guilty verdict was commanding more bandwidth by the time I read the online edition of the papers

The OZ outback is a pretty wild place and travellers of all creeds including the locals occasionally underestimate the precautions that that should be factored into planning a trip, and overestimate their ability to do so.

There have been some high profile disasters involving travellers here - fires, crocs - what's not to like about a good croc story?, the Joanne Lees/ Peter Falconio abduction & probable murder, and of course the backpacker murders committed by an Australian of Croatian origin Ivan Milat.

    Anyone see Wolf Creek?
