Britt Search: Body at Beach

(9 posts)

  1. Croatian police say a body has this afternoon been found on a beach in central Dubrovnik, the city where missing Melbourne backpacker Britt Lapthorne was last seen, says one of Britt's friends in an email to Anorak.

The 21-year-old Australian went missing two weeks ago after going out to a Dubrovnik nightclub with friends.

On site Australian reporters say five police boats were off the coast where the body was found, according to Australia's ABC News.

A local film crew was told the body was "unrecognisable", and Britt's father Dale, who is in Croatia to search for his daughter, was "devastated" when he heard a body had been found.

Ms Lapthorne was last seen at a nightclub in the seaside village in the early hours of September 18.

Earlier her boyfriend, Simon Imberger, rejected Croatian newspaper reports Britt was promiscuous and a known drunk before she disappeared in Dubrovnik.

The search story and her family pleas for help have not appeared in any UK National...despite the fact thousands of Australian backpackers are travelling in Britain.

I wonder if this will alert the mighty BBC to the case?

It's got 2/3 of the square root of sweet FA mention on their news site so far.....

There has been nothing in the UK press at all about it Mic.
Its possible that Aussie back -packers now in the UK may have seen her, but with nothing being said, how can they know. Nothing in the European press either

  5. Since there is never fairness in these situations I have to say we were slow to pick up on it too. The first hints of a problem came from Australia. No coverage in Anorak's host nation, so the temptation was to leave it for few hours; to wait and see. Finally it was clear from the passport, travel documents and other material allegedly left in Britt's room all was not well.

The family was not informed for many days which shows a different way of policing in Croatia. We started to report it.
It was a worthy news story and should have been covered far more widely since we live in a goldfish bowl of a global village.
Sometimes London's hacks as so far off the news scent it is hardly worth chucking them a bone.

The story is just breaking and there is no hint yet of accident, foul-play or even identity. We all think we know the worst, but have to wait.

  6. Anorak poster Nancye's son knows Britt's brother and the family. She is keeping us right up to date and the very latest news is there is to be an immediate press conference where the police are to reveal all they know...so far.

The fact is that news will wing its way to Australia and then back to us since the Euro media coverage has been nil.
    Well, there was one exception.

  7. The latest update is police suspect the body is not Britt's. The body is in too poor a state of decomposition to fit the time line.

So there is still hope in the Lapthorne family.
