"The sun fell from the sky."
    "The clocks stood still."
"The sun went down on Carinthia."

Those were the words of Jörg Haider's BZÖ-colleagues, yesterday morning, after his death was announced...

Afterwards I drove through the city where I live, saw people walking, talking ... an ordinary Saturday morning ... but something was different, and I could actually feel it, see it:

A big, dark, heavy cloud has finally been lifted.

I am very glad that in an otherwise gloomy world there is one shaft of light, and to hell with the impropriety of welcoming someone's death; it has reduced at least one fear for the world.

I know a lot about financial markets, but that isn't the only reason I have to write about the crisis; I've read some history too. The rise of Fascism emerged in part from the catastrophic effects of the market crash and the subsequent Great Depression; that is a prospect which should worry any sane person.

The first proposal put forward by the US Government would have put extraordinary and unlimited economic power into the hands of one person; Hank Paulson, the Secretary to the US Treasury. Even the so-called newspapers of record in the US, the New York Times and the Washington Post, took days to even begin to recognise that he was demanding power that Stalin only dreamed of.

The revised bill still gives him unparalleled power, but there are some checks and safe guards. Not many, but some.

This atavistic belief that one strong man should be in charge might be expected in a dictatorship but when it arises in a supposed democracy and 'Leader of the Free World' as the Bushies like to put it, it is truly scary.

I am glad that your cloud lifted.
