Stephen Harper's clone emerged once more from his study today to tell Canadians that

“This is a huge problem that faces the Ontario community and the Canadian economy by extension”

which is why he and Dalton McGuinty, the Premier of Ontario, propose to give General Motors and Chrysler 4 billion loonies of the Canadian taxpayers' money, provided they promise not to spend it all at once snd tidy their bedrooms.

Concerned Canadians who recall the original Stephen Harper assuring them that the Canadian economy is in tip-top shape and needs no economic stimuli in any size, shape or form, much less bail-outs of US companies costing billions of loonies, may wonder how things got to change this fast. The answer is that they didn't; it was just Stephen Harper demonstrating the truth of that wise old adage:

'If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you probably don't realise what the f*ck is happening...'

I liked the country so much I bought it...

Harper seems to have some problems grasping the essential elements of a democracy; proroguing Parliament because you know your government will fall on a no-confidence vote is all very well in quasi-dictatorships, but looks a bit bad if you are claiming to belong to what used to be called the Free World.

On the other hand, he has stripped himself of all possible excuses; blaming the other parties for forcing you to completely reverse your policies can be extremely useful, particularly when the voters take a look at the size of the bill they will be footing. And it was Harper who told them there would be no bill at all, because everything was just peachy...

And another update: it may be more than a mere 4 billion loonies:

“I cannot rule it out” said Harper.

I can only assume that he really is a clone, because he went on to say:

“We have a social responsibility that goes beyond the marketplace.”

Let's just remind ourselves that this is the guy who claimed that the markets delivered perfection, and closed down Parliament to stop politicians from other parties toppling his Government and interfering with the workings of the markets.

Wonder if his PR people read Anorak?
