Madeleine McCann: Look Into Robert Murat’s Eyes
AGAIN the Express has Madeleine McCann where Princess Diana once resided in perpetuity: on its front page.
“MADELEINE,” says the headline, “witness tells chief suspect: You are lying.”
The Express has news of the face-to-face meeting between Robert Murat and three of the McCanns friends. One of the women launches a “tirade”. It is claimed she points the finger at Murat and screams: “I know you were there. I would recognise you anywhere.”
They recognise Murat because, as the Express says, he has a lazy right eye. Look into my eyes. He has a detached retina.
The Express says this could “Shatter” Murat’s alibi. It could. Or couldn’t. Murat remains a free man, albeit under suspicion.
Murat’s “spokesman” Tuck Price, says: “Robert found it traumatic. He could not understand how these people could sit there and accuse him of lying. It all seems to revolve around them recognising his dodgy right eye.” Adding: “It was dark, how could they have seen it. Besides that, he was not there anyway.”
Mr Price is billed as a “friend” to Murat in the Mirror. Why not in the Express? An oversight by the paper or a slight shift designed to show Murat as friendless. Who would stand by him but a spokesman?
But Dr Russell O’Brian is adamant. He says he saw Murat at 1am. A Dr Fiona Payne is alleged to have told police: “He seemed to be peeking into the apartment.” Dr O’Brien’s partner, Jade Tanner, tells of a man rushing away from the resort carrying a small child in blanket.” All three are friends of the McCanns.
“You’re a liar. I saw you peek in apartment,” says the Mirror’s headline.
But we don’t know if he did. Murat says he is innocent. A friend of the McCanns says Murat was in the area on the night Madeleine McCann went missing. And that is it.
More is need to secure a conviction. But we know no more.
All we have is the finger pointing…

If the friend of the McCann’s would recognise him anywhere (so would I given the amount of publicity) why don’t the PJ have a decent photo fit ?

If they would recognise him anywhere, why did it take them so long to come forward - his name and picture have been bandied about the papers for yonks.
Looks like the fund is being spent on greasing peoples “memories”.

Since his face has been splashed all over the papers for so long, even though he had not been charged, it seems unlikely to me that any identification evidence could be considered reliable.

As regards Robert M. The facts that have been reported and appear reliable make it so utterly improbable that he would be implicated that I dont believe it for a moment.
- The alleged abductor would have to have monitored the McCann’s and family for several days to learn what they all looked like, where M’s bedroom was, what her parents evening routine was. However, Robert M was away in England until two days before M disappeared.
- On the night itself the family and friends say they were doing rounds to monitor the children, so a kidnapper would have had to have been keeping an eye on their dinner table and monitoring their movements. In addition, one member of the group was away from the table for at least 30 minutes when M was taken, such that a kidnapper would have had to have monitored that person as well, in order not to risk being caught. This sugegsts several people - if Robert M is involved then where are all these people. Indeed, if there were was a gang then why would Robert M be needed in the first place?
- Why would Robert M kidnap a child just 100 metres from his own home? The chances of being questioned by police and being a suspect would be high.
- Reports say M may have been carried through Praia da Luz to a waiting boat on the beach. Robert M has spent most of his life in Pda Lz, and everyone who lives there long term has known him for years. Its a very small town. The chances of being recognised while carrying the child would have been very high. Again, it would be madness to try it, and if he did it why didnt someone he knows see it?
- If he had kidnapped M, then why colunteer his help to police and journalists as an interpreter, drawing huge attention to himself? He would have had nothing to gain by supposedly spying on the investigation, and everything to lose.
- The shutters of M’s bedroom were allegedly closed at the beginning of the evening but open by the time she was found missing. Reports say that the police said the shutters would be very noisy and difficult to force open from the outside. No one heard the shutters being forced open, and the twins inside didnt wake up, which suggests that the shutters were opened from the inside. How woudl Robert M have access to the inside of the apartment? And why woudl a kidnapper who is already inside then want to open the shutters. Much easier to escape with a child by going back out through the door.
In terms of the witnesses thinking they saw him. Perhaps they did. Perhaps Robert was so scared by the initial police questioning that he said he was at home all night, when in fact he had stepped out briefly upon hearing of M’s disappearance, but he then got trapped into what is to him an innocent lie. His presence that evening after the fact would make it even more likely that he was not involved in M’s disappearance. It would be mad to return to the scene of a kidnapping two hours later if you had actually conducted the kidnapping

this friend must have seen photos of Murat a few days after the child went missing why didnt she tell the PJ or Maddies parents that she saw him peeking into the apartment

If I was the McCann’s friend and I saw a man peeking in the window where their children were asleep, I would immediately question what the hell was he up to.
I certainly would not have went happily back to my dinner! Whatever about the parents feeling guilty, if this is true, I know I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if I was this friend.

Murat was under surviellance for a week before he was made a suspect. Perhaps he had been identified back then which is why the police were following him in the first place.

Cathy - i think (but correct me if i’m wrong) that the McCann’s friends have said that they saw Robert M about 2 hours AFTER Madeleine disappeared, at a moment when lots of people and police were milling around the apartament and trying to help in looking for M. The only reason why this alleged sighting is being presented as relevant is because it would contradict Robert’s claim to have been at home all night, both earlier in the evening when M disappeared and later in the evening when people were searching for her.
