Madeleine McCann: Cracking Stuff And Empty Desks

mccann1.jpgMADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

DAILY EXPRESS, front page: “MADELEINE: FATHER STORMS OUT OF TV INTERVIEW: He erupts in fury at ‘blood on the wall’ question”. Plus pages 8 and 9, with logo (“THE HUNT FOR MADELEINE: Day 118”).

THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER tells how Gerry McCann “finally buckled under pressure” and left his “shaken” wife to face a Spanish TV interviewer. The paper thinks the incident is “certain to heighten speculation that the enormous pressure of the hunt for Madeleine is beginning to take its toll” – not that the Express is contributing to any speculation, of course.

DAILY TELEGRAPH, page 9: “Madeleine’s father storms out of interview”

The paper says that after a few minutes, Gerry return to the Spanish prime-time programme. Mrs McCann held Madeleine’s toy Cuddle Cat. She told the presenter that he “had not stepped out of line”. (The Express version claims that Kate “Blamed the outburst on the line of questioning”.

THE TIMES, page 23: “Madeleine’s father walks out of TV interview”

The paper says that tension started to build after the interviewer asked: “You were the last people to see Madeleine alive, is that correct?” Mr McCann replied that they would not divulge anything about the investigation that might help the perpretrator cover his tracks.

DAILY MAIL, page 11: “McCann storms off”

The paper claims that Mr McCann “finally cracked”. Then he “ranted and waved his arms around before marching off”.

DAILY MIRROR, page15: “MADDY FATHER CRACKS ON TV”

“Madeleine McCann’s dad rips off his mic and storms out of a TV broadcast after an interviewer quizzes him over details about his daughter’s disappearance.” Wife Kate “looked on in disbelief at the fiery outburst”. The McCann’s spokeswoman Justine McGuinness “rubbished” reports that their marriage was on the rocks, saying: “They are very happy.”

THE STAR, page 11: “MADDIE’S DAD LOSES HIS RAG”

Gerry “stormed out” according to the Star’s version of events.

THE SUN, page 22: “WE’LL KEEP A DESK EMPTY FOR MADDIE: School pledge on her first day”

The paper also informs us that a coat peg and locker have been set aside at the Bishop Ellis Catholic primary school in Thurmaston. Headteacher Gail Neill said that a candle burns for Madeleine too.

THE INDEPENDENT and THE GUARDIAN: No Madeleine news today.

  1. 1 Concerned caz Says:

I do not understand the adverse media interest in this AT ALL. This family have simply been put through hell and quite how they have managed thus far to cope with such dignity and restraint in the light of horrendous speculation is beyond me. I, like Madeleine’s family, and many others wish only the best outcome from this situation. We in this country are used to a flow of information which does not come from the Portuguese authorities which leaves media and tabloid junkies nothing but pure speculation and outright lies to feed their need to sell papers. If I was in this situation, hoping beyond hope that my child be returned totally unharmed and I had the foresight to do what the McCann’s have to maximise the chances of a positive outcome - I would be LIVID at any suggestion I, or my partner were somehow involved. All this achieves is to sell trash newspapers and divert energy and resources better spent in getting this innocent child back to her family. I pray for Madeleine and all the other worlds children in similar situations who do not have the benefit of an innovative and far-reaching campaign for their safe return. DO NOT FORGET the only real story here - a CHILD IS MISSING.

  2. 2 geez Says:

Whatever has happened, has happened and the perpetrator has already covered his tracks, very well by all accounts.
So please tell us all you know Gerry, this will put an end to all the surmising and guesswork which is getting everybody nowhere.
In actual fact, by letting all you know ‘out of the bag’ could very well bring this unfortunate story to a speedy closure and hopefully, to a happy end.
The whole story has gone on long enough, sod the Portuguese or whoever elses law of secrecy is in force, TELL US WHAT YOU KNOW !!! PLEASE !!!
    PLEASE !!!

  3. 3 Toni Says:

why dont they put everyone who is involved in this mess on a polygraph test .
    simple questions…
do you know what happened to madeleine
    Is she alive
    did you take her
    did you kill her

then it will be a process of elimination.

  4. 4 penster Says:

Polygraphs are not that reliable are they Toni?
She’s not coming back, & I doubt any trace of her remains will ever be found. I think that the forensics everyone is holding their breath for will be negative or inconclusive. This will be relegated to “unsolved”. As Geev said, the perpetrator has covered his tracks, it was all too easy. Noone around checking the kids, unlocked door, street access. Straight into the car and then ….? To me, that is the simplest theory.
The Mccanns will crack under the pressure and eventually break up.

  5. 5 kimon Says:

    toni,
    you are absolutely god-damn right ! yes,everyone on a poly !

  6. 6 kimon Says:

why for god’s sake why did not the mcann’s not hire specialist detectives to follow up on all leads ?
after all, they had the funds available via the trust.

  7. 7 SPUDGUN Says:

    Concerned caz:

“DO NOT FORGET the only real story here - a CHILD IS MISSING”.

Actually Caz, therin lies the rub. That may be YOUR real story, but for many of the critics and detractors from the original ‘abduction’ line, the REAL story is that Maddie isn’t so much missing, but DEAD. Of course, there’s no PROOF that she’s dead, and certainly no proof ,that we’re yet aware of, of the McCanns duplicity, but as much as you may actually believe that the inumerable reports and statements emanating out of Portugal are ALL lies and fabrication, I would have to rather suggest that; NOT only is it apparent that Maddie is dead, but that her parents and / or friends at least lied sufficiently to warrent consideration being given to them as being involved, to some degree, in her demise and subsequent disappearance. Of course, everyone knows that you can’t believe ALL that you read in the papers, but to suggest that EVERY single word and statement being issued from the Portuguese press is simply speculation designed to sell newspapers is an even bigger unlikelihood that Maddie was abducted by Alians. Exaggerations maybe. Distortions, possibly. Elaboration, definitely. These are common toold for tabloid journalism, but irrespective of what you may think, there are SEVERE penalties for LIBEL, for telling downright lies and untruths without foundation or evidence.

  8. 8 kimon Says:

    penster,
agree 100% that the mcann’s will break up as they surely have being heaping blame on one another.

  9. 9 kimon Says:

    spudgun,
the rumours have been flying since day one, all of which have been censored by the uk media and in particular by grovelling sky news.
there was a great report in the swiss media, http://www.lematin.ch , which stated the inconsistencies about statement as well as the mcann’s true intentions.

  10. 10 Toni Says:

we are all getting very frustrated with having no direction, I can just imagine how the parents feel, but they dont seem so ……… why does Gerry hide behind the blog, he has been on so many chat shows now and as far as I can remember neither have said …from the heart and with emotion… please give our baby back, does he really think that the kidanpper / killer is reading his blog…I dont think so

  11. 11 suzze cute Says:

It was a dreadful thing to leave the children in the apartment but I think its about time we put pressure on the Portugese government/press etc to stop printing inuendo and made up lies. I am just pure plain sick of it. and then the british papers pick up these lies and then the Portugese press quotes the English papers.
The Mcanns lets face it are the ones paying the ultimate price of not knowing who or what has their baby girl and what are they doing to her.
I think its about time we all came down off the high moral ground and offer a little bit of compassion and support.
If nothing else they have more than likely seen off a few others who might be tempted to do the same and abduct a child.
Its nothing short of disgusting that they are now speculating on the state of their marriage. Is there any sanity left in this awful awful story?

  12. 12 No. 1 Says:

I think Anorak has a hand to play in the Mcann witch hunt. Have you ever looked at the slant of the web pages?

  13. 13 penster Says:

The PJ would have got to the bottom of the tapas 9 inconsistencies by now, in fact, I reckon that would have been one of the first jobs. The tapas 9 are bound by secrecy laws and in this instance, I think that those laws have served them well. It is not within their interests for the world to know for sure just how often they were all leaving young children unattended.

Suzze cute - the Portugese tabloids are no better and def no worse than any other gutter press anywhere in the world ESPECIALLY the UK!

  14. 14 maz Says:

Who said they didnt hire a private detective?
Surely even if they did hire one/many of them, the invoice(s) for services rendered would not be issued yet so that it could be paid out of the account which currently only list printing expenses of some posters/bands and some modest amounts to cover travel as reported.
I hope that they do have some good ones hired.

  15. 15 suzze cute Says:

Freedom of the press is one thing but this is ridiculous!
What kind of morals do these people have?

  16. 16 maz Says:

Couldnt agree more suzze cute. I think its outrageous that we can let the press either UK , Portugese or where ever get away with this.
I read that the Mcanns are not going to sue for libel which is fair enough, they have enough going on as it is and are focussed on the campaign to bring Madeleine back. But as for the rest of us we should be ashamed to sit back and do nothing and watch the gutter press tear them apart like a pack of savages.

  17. 17 Matt Says:

I see the favourite topic of the press has moved on from a missing child to the possibility of the Mcann marriage crumbling. WOW isnt that news worth reading!

  18. 18 penster Says:

suzze cute the press is there to make money selling ad space. there is a market for trash reporting and the press cater to it, sell papers, ad revenue up, shareholders happy. it’s accepted not to believe everything you read and be selective in where you source your news.

  19. 19 suzze cute Says:

I rarely if ever buy these papers but enough people do on a regular basis to feed into and generate a shameful reaction to this case and thereby generate a baying mob of a misinformed rabble.
I still think that somehow we have a duty to ourselves as moral individuals to stand up and say enough!

  20. 20 Richard Says:

    Good morning all.
Yes we all saw this story (the Gerry storms out story) coming yesterday and I am sure that it was another one of his carefully calculated, stage-managed events to draw attention and sympathy, like the stolen wallet with Photos, visits to the Edinburgh the USA or the Pope, and the gratuitous phonecall to Rhys Jones’s parents, etce etc.

I don’t know what happened on May 3rd but do not trust anything this man says or does.

  21. 21 DA MUSE Says:

I think we should start a petition against the English press to put pressure on the Portugese press to stop this nonsense. This family are truly suffering and we are all sticking in the knives even more by supporting the gutterpresses who contribute to it.

  22. 22 by stander Says:

Is anyone ashamed to see Gerry Mcann driven to walking out of the press conference? I am!

  23. 23 Toni Says:

yesterday they were stepping down from the public eye, stepping out of the media limelight, but then goes and puts the spotlight right on himself by storming out of yet another tv interview. I noticed that they didnt actually hold hands during that interview ..mmm

  24. 24 suzze cute Says:

I dont think it was orchestrated in the least. I am surprised that it took this long

  25. 25 objective Says:

Hey what is the story here The Marriage or the Child?

  26. 26 blob Says:

    Richard …its afternoon

  27. 27 Dogstar Says:

maz Says: ‘…But as for the rest of us we should be ashamed to sit back and do nothing and watch the gutter press tear them apart like a pack of savages…’ [Post 16]

And how many of you felt the same way when the press tore into Mr Murat like a pack of savages?

I don’t see many of you putting your hands up…

  28. 28 Richard Says:

Of course it was pre-planned. “He’ll be back” Kate said as she wistfully looked at the empty chair……. Nice touch.

  29. 29 madge simpson Says:

Toni what do you mean by
‘out of yet another tv interview’
dont remember him doing it before. Did I miss something??

  30. 30 penster Says:

This case is self perpetuating, it needs no encouragement.
I think it’s horrifying that the school where Madeleine would have attended would traumatise new little children on their first day by keeping a desk and peg for a missing prob dead child. She certainly deserves to be remembered but what about the other kids?
