Madeleine McCann: An Arrest, Robert Murat’s Knife And Fury
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADELEINE: DNA is found. Arrest expected ‘in 48 hours’.”
No yellow ribbon on the Mirror’s front page. But news of that blood found on the McCann’s apartment walls. We learn: “The DNA of a potential suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has been found by British scientists.”
“The DNA is said to have been found in an area of the Praia da Luz flat where the individual should not have been.”
But the flat wasn’t sealed off after Madeleine went missing. Robert Murat, suspect No. 1, was operating as a volunteer translator.
Pages 4 and 5: “McCANNS IN DNA TORMENT.” Kate and Gerry McCann are “angry”. The Portuguese police are reported not to have called the McCanns nor informed them of the test results.
THE STAR front page: “MADDIE – Police set to make arrests.”
Page 9: And “sources say officers are about to swoop”. A picture of Robert Murat with the caption “SUSPECT” illustrates the “full story”.
DAILY MAIL front page: “MADELEINE: Police ‘near to an arrest’.”
Page 5: The prospect of an arrest “within days” has been “raised”. Police are looking at the results of blood, hair and saliva samples found in the McCanns’ apartment. The McCanns are said to be “frustrated and upset” at not being told this by police.
Arrests could be made. Or not. The Mail says the findings could just help explain what happened to Madeleine, and the results have not arrived in full to Portugal.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE ARREST IS NOW ‘CLOSE’. DNA tests produce vital result.”
THE WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER says police are “expected” to make an arrest within days. Why not immediately is unsaid.
Portuguese police have the results which “are understood to confirm police suspicions that Madeleine died in her parents’ holiday apartment”.
They also point to a new suspect the police have been monitoring.
Robert Murat is pictured working on the roof of his home. He has a knife in one hand.
THE SUN page 8: “COPS KEEP MADDIE DNA RESULTS SECRET. Parent’s fury at villa blood probe detectives.”
A villa not a flat? Maddie and not Madeleine? Is this the same case?
Readers are told that “relations between the McCanns and the Portuguese police hit a new low when detectives failed to tell them the DNA test results were back”.
Gerry, a “cardiologist” is said to be “upset and frustrated”.
THE TIMES page 21: “Madeleine police gain new information from science test in Britain”.
The results cold lead to “a series of arrests”.
THE TELEGRAPH: “Madeleine police handed forensic evidence.” And: “Mr and Mrs McCann only found out through the media when they were interrupted during a jog by their campaign manager Justine McGuinness.”
Mr Murat’s spokesman Tuck Price says the only named suspect had not been told about any developments in the case.
THE GUARDIAN AND THE INDEPENDENT: No Madeleine news today.

I am very disgusted in/with this case.
I have 6 kids and I have never, ever left them alone, not even for a second.
I was disgusted when I learned that Kate and Gerry left their 3 children alone in a holiday place/apartment, with doors or windows open, while they went to eat
Some say the Mccann’s are paying for that choice, but what about little Maddie? She may have paid the utlimate price for their choice.
Personally, it is my opinion that the parents are responsible for the disappearance, possible death of this beautiful little girl, and I belive they have used their high profile search for Maddie as a cover up. Why is it the parents are never seen crying on tv interviews or in newspaper stories? If this were one of my children missing, I would be totally devestated, and nothing could hold back the tears.
It is my belief that little Maddie “was in the way” that evening.
My heart aches for this beautiful little girl. And I wish they would get the case solved and find her whether she is alive or not.
I hope the parents are not involved, but the mother in me thinks they are. With everything I have seen and haven’t seen, everything I know, I think they are.
If Maddie is not with us anymore, I think the responsible person/s involved should pay for it. A life for a life.
This whole thing makes me sick just thinking about it.

moderation, I thought if we ran fast enough we could have left you behind, if you insist on following us then at least be nice and then you can also play with us.
Hey, something to consider after everyone finish with the case or what?
September 8th, 2007 at 9:58 pm
For the sake of other children to whom the same may happen, I pray to God that Maddie’s parents are innocent….
What parents in Portugal would let their children, that age, alone in their berdrooms, to have dinner with friends? None, I’m sure.
What kind of newspapermen are those who sell their souls to the devil to sell a few lines? Do they need to despise their Portuguese peers? Do they need to offend the Portuguese police?
I’m sure that both of them , as well as the Portuguese people, have been quite solidary to the McCans. Let’s just hope they aren’t disappointed with the outcome…

Jamais auparavant dans l’histoire, autant de monde s’est intéressé au sort d’une petite fille!

If McCann is convicted, he will get the opportunity to meet many Bono’s
September 8th, 2007 at 5:05 am
The McCrims will be most upset at failing to meet Bono
Maybe The Great Sage & Onion, Geldoff will have some wise words to say to them …
September 7th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
I just got home from work…it has hit our news big time (US-EST)….the quotes are not good…they said this a.m. on NY radio stations at 7:15 a.m.
that the McCanns ARE suspects…it is on our local news, the radio, and cable news…
This is unusual because it has been so quiet over here, we are too busy with american criminal news….so many criminals, so little time….
September 7th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Yes they will! EVERYONE gets to meet Bono.
September 7th, 2007 at 6:17 pm
Let me tell you the real sadness if the accusations are true:
kate and gerry will not get to meet Bono.

Hi folks - I think I’d rather post here - ‘next door’ looks like a bear pit today!
Yes Moderation - this is the same lawyer who was working pro-bono on the libel case … we did say at the time that he seemed like an odd choice for that job!
Jonnie - the ex-pat press has been fairly neutral to be honest. No lurid headlines, and sympathetic to a degree, but without the sickening sycophancy displayed by the mainstream British media. The only problem is that they could hardly claim to ‘break’ news - but then that really isn’t what they are there for!
I guess we will have to wait for the final outcome, and for the true facts to be released before it will be possible to assess the media in terms of information/misinformation - but like you it will be something that I intend looking at very closely!
September 7th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Any views on the local expat press’s handling of this? Any better or worse than the UK Nationals’ parlous performance? Views welcome as I am trying to track information/misinformtion to see eventually who and where the truth was tumbled upon and passed over.
September 7th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
hello everyone anything new about the mccanns
September 7th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
At work..have to go back but….this morning, my NY radio station (7:30 am EST) said…A breakthrough in the Missing British Child MMc..yada…the parents ARE suspects….
Now, this station has one minute of news an hour….we have so many other nuts to cover that we hardly ever get any European news…..this was the lead story..which, to me is significant….
Will log on after work…

Hi Molly your post 565 I agree with. I have always felt that the friends knew something. I think the McCann suspect status is a red herring to rattle the nerves of all involved in this sorry mess.
But wow what a ‘who-dunnit’ story! when’s the movie coming out? I think Toni should write the scripts. Could do with another limerick Toni.

Bindweed has been banned and did not make any rude remarks.
I am not allowed to have an opinion or respond to SSS.
This forum is run by the SSS!
It is one-sided and biased.
And by the way SSS you as bad a parent as the McCanns for dumping your kids on someone else to bring up….for what?…………MONEY???
Selfish parents end up like the McCanns.
Bye everyoone enjoy posting for as long as you agree with the modsandadmin!

597 Dogstar, perhaps you’re being a bit hasty in dismissing paedophile rings? The truth about this case will probably bring some nasty surprises when the guilty are uncovered.
oh dear, I got the spam sum wrong first attempt!

439. SPUDGUN:
………”I for one would love to compose a short list of the most sanctimonious, sycophantic, fawning twats who described the “worshipping and concientious parents” with their “tangible pain and suffering” their volumous “silent hurt” and their “immeasurable and unspoken sorrow”……starting with the TIMES”
But what if you’re wrong? Supposing it is a ploy to get the real abductor to confess? I can’t believe the parents could be involved in this. But if I’m wrong, you have my humble apologies, Spudgun.
468. bindweed Says:
“…….If this is true the Pope gets to hear things before we do…does anyone know what blog he goes on?”
There is not much to laugh about here, but I thought that was very funny, bindweed.

I think the McCanns have known about this coming for ages…. the lawyer is apparently the same one suing the mag-rag. Is that right Molly? Also the PJ told them on monday they were to be interviewed.
I do skim all the news as much as poss (not only for Madeleine stuff) but I also force myself to switch off for long periods of time to catch up on work….. maybe cold turkey and rehab are calling me!
September 7th, 2007 at 9:49 am
LOL Julie - I’ll switch to the new thread next time I post … I am at work though and have several deadlines to meet before midday, so my postings will be sporadic at best until lunchtime
September 7th, 2007 at 9:46 am
Molly please come and post on the new thread, I find your posts so interesting, so I’m jumping between threads at the mo. PLEEEZ?

Could Moriarty be behind this?
September 7th, 2007 at 9:40 am
This from the Telegraph of this morning:
A family friend of Kate McCann said Mrs McCann has been told she will be named an official “arguido” when she returns to the police station for further questioning later today.
Kate McCann was questioned for over 10 hours
After Mrs McCann was questioned for over 11 hours yesterday, the McCann’s lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu, insisted she was interviewed only as a witness.
Portuguese laws severely restrict what those privy to an investigation may say publicly, but Mrs McCann is said to be “amazed and concerned” by the news that her status has changed.
September 7th, 2007 at 9:33 am
Moderation - I think that the scenarios you have described in relation to Rachel Charles and the mother of Portuguese Joanna are EXACTLY why the McCanns Lawyer was sitting in on Kate McCann’s interview, and will continue to be present during further interviews with her and Gerry.
The Lawyer is a well known criminal lawyer, who also happens to be the current chairman of a Portuguese Human Rights organisation and who is active in the field of justice and prison reform - his presence GUARANTEES that any allegations of beatings or forced confessions will fall at the first post.
I’m not sure that Kate McCann has requested Arguido status - Justine’s statement this morning said that Kate ‘has been informed’ that her status will be that of Arguido … plus, it does not make sense that Kate would have requested Arguido status while Gerry has not, especially with him being due to be questioned today!
September 7th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Tourism may be down because very bit of accommodation is taken up with Fleet Streets finest, and lets face who would wwant to go there with that scum around.
Given their voracious appetites I doubt the bars and restaurants have suffered.
September 7th, 2007 at 9:24 am
To be fairly honest, a certain person who is related to the missing child looks faaaaar more creepy than Murat. I for one, cannot wait to see the newspapers reactions when Murat’s arguido status is lifted … I think they’re going to be gob-smacked and wont have much to say ….. frikkin cowards!
Don’t they find it rather strange that Murat does not seem to be included in this latest line of questioning? I most certainly do … it’s because they’ve figured that he in all probability COULD NOT have done what he was accused of !
Nope Teddy Boy, I’m not being naughty, I’m not allowed to be naughty here!
September 7th, 2007 at 9:21 am
I don’t think the Portugese legal system is all that popular. Amnesty International and Prisoner Abroad have concerns.
It was in an Algarve newspaper that the claims were made that tourism this summer was badly affected, I think it was Sky (again!!) that picked it up. where did you see the report that tourism was up PC?
September 7th, 2007 at 9:21 am
If the lab results are from Birmingham and the sniffer dogs also from the UK, I fail to see how the Portuguese police can frame them!
By the way, folks, there’s a new article up on Anorak.
