Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann’s Holy Communion, Gerry’s Running And Sleeping Pills
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
THE SUN front page: “MADDIE DAD TELLS PALS OF TORMENT. We’re frightened and we have been backed into a corner, this is inhumane.”
Gerry McCann accuses the Portuguese police of subjecting them to “inhuman treatment”. There is no word of Robert Murat, the other named suspect.
Pages 4 and 5: “The Sun hears Gerry’s words. And just for the record features some of the awful “SMEARS”.
• “A mum struggling to cope?
• Traces of sedative in hair?
• A hyperactive daughter?
• Ordered back to Portugal?”
At least the Sun’s Fergus Shanahan is on Kate’s side. “Kate MaCann’s guilty of nothing more than sticking to her story,” says the headline above his column.
The case reminds him of a witch hunt. Kate McCann is on the ducking stool. Will she come up alive and guilty or dead and innocent?
And who is to blame for the McCanns’ suffering? Paedos? Tabloid sensation and speculation dressed up as news? No, it’s the foreigners. The Portuguese police who “change their tune every five minutes”. Some news to we who hardly hear a word from the meninos no azul.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE WAS ‘KILLED BY SLEEPING PILLS’.”
This is the “sensational new claim”.
Only yesterday the Mirror was telling us that the McCanns don’t take sleeping pills.
Pages 4 and 5: “New evidence that Madeleine was ‘killed by pills overdose’” – the prosecutor’s report says fluids found in the back of the McCanns’ hire car “prove that the little girl had ingested medicines, without doubt sleeping pills, in large quantities.” The dossier says it as this that “caused an overdose” and so accidental death.
Oh?
“This is not a theory but a fact contained in hard evidence,” says a “senior Portuguese police source”.
So that’s that, then…
Pages 5 and 7: “DNA expert will help McCanns” – Sir Alec Jeffries says samples of DNA cannot prove innocence or guilt. He says only a full match of Madeleine’s DNA would prove she was in the car. And the match, as the Express notes elsewhere, might be 88 per cent.
DAILY MIRROR front page: “KATE & GERRY..their story.” The front-page “EXCLUSIVE” shows Gerry in a rugby kit and Catholic Kate in her Holy Communion white.
The pictures appear above the headline: “MADDY ‘PILLS OVERDOSE’, shock claim that she died from sleeping tablets.”
Pages 4 and 5: “POLICE IN HUNT FOR BLOOD AT FLAT No 2” – Sniffer dogs have detected blood “close to the flat” from where Madeleine McCann went missing, it has been claimed.
Pages 6 and 7: “Kate and Gerry were talking about a new baby but now they just want Madeleine back. They are very close..children are the most important things in their lives,” says Kate’s father Brian.
Gerry was once the captain of Napir City Rovers in New Zealand. Teammate David Anstis says: “He was a really nice bloke.”
Reader may recalls how Robert Murat, who has no PR, was a loon who liked to jump on bouncy castles. And he had a dodgy eye.
The paper says that Gerry was Scotland’s under-19 1500 metres champion and Scottish Universities’ 800 metres champion.
He must be innocent.
Kate was top of her class at school. She keeps fit with trips to the gym and taking the children swimming. Gerry would play golf.
Case closed.
Says Valeria Armstrong, landlady of the Royal Oak in Rothley: “They are gentle caring people.”
DAILY MAIL front page: “As social workers are called to McCann home, an extraordinary new claim… “MADDIE KILLED BY SLEEPING TABLETS’”
Kate’s diary reveals “struggle with Madeleine”. There are “four pages of “reports and analysis”.
Pages 6 and 7: The Cuddly Cat, the Maddy Catty, is to be seized.
Portugal’s ambassador to the UK hopes relations between the two countries have not been damaged. Says Antonio Carlos: “We are doing out utmost to solve the problem together with the support of the British police.”
No Portuguese suspect has been named.
Page 8: “THE NEW QUESTIONS FOR KATE.” The Mail has 14 questions it would like Kate McCann to answer. Is she would just jot her responses down and send them to the Mail’s office, it would be appreciated.
The Mail does not ask if she killed her daughter. Instead she is invited to respond to:
• “Do you ever lose your temper with your children?
• Did Madeleine cut herself in the apartment?
• Could Madeleine have bled on something which was later put in the car?
• Could medications have been placed in Madeleine’s reach?
• Did you feel your husband was not pulling his weight with the child care?”
Anorak empathises with the case and has taken the liberty of answering the questions on Kate McCann’s behalf. Say we: Yes, Who doesn’t; Maybe; Possibly; Perhaps; Tell me about it.
Page 9: “Our first thought was that she’d been taken by a paedophile,” says Kate McCann Paris Match magazine. Her words could have been spoken by any number of tabloid editors.
“Of course we feel guilty at being at the restaurant when she disappeared,” say Kate McCann. “That will always be so, but the person who broke in and took Madeleine is the most guilty.”
INDEPENDENT page 8: The Indy hears the words of Sir Alec Jeffries, the words he delivered to BBC’s Newsnight two days ago. The Indy is on the case.
THE TIMES front page: “McCann twins ‘safety talks’.”
Pages 6: “Social workers visit McCanns to see if the twins are at risk.” Is Kate McCann overfeeding them? We hope not.
Page 7: “Get the cat to forensics, armchair sleuths demand.” The web is alive with theories. And the cat must be interrogated. Get the Maddy Catty!
Page 21: Ben Mcintryre says “There is a Miss Marple inside all of us”. The McCanns “bring out our sleuthing instinct.”
And we though it was just idle gossip and speculation.
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 13: As reported on Anorak, the McCanns are looking for a “media handler”. Brand McCann needs a steady hand.
THE GUARDIAN: “McCanns in talks with leading PR adviser” – Look out for Kate McCann in Hello!, Hell’s Kitchen and l’m A Celebrity..Get Me Out Of Here!

And the winner is … Sydney!

The latest is that Police suspect that a 2nd apartment was used to hide the body in????????. New theory emerges. Maybe she was being kept in apartment drugged Not dead (hence no stenching body) and who knows what happened afterward!!!!! - I know riduculous - but just anotehr tall story to add to the list
September 14th, 2007 at 8:08 am
#2 It’s a pretty silly theory - so yes, the papers will no doubt run it tomorrow! No matter how this case is resolved (or not), the Mccanns will never leave the newspapers. Already their past is being dug up (pardon the pun), expect more interviews with people who stood next to them in the supermarket queue. I have not seen any identikit images of what “Maddie” would look like as an adult, but they cannot be far away. Are the papers responding to interest in the case, or creating it?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:15 am
The media have people in a whirlwind, did they, didnt they - or would they would they. Is she or isnt she. Everyone reads into something with a total different point of you. The worst thing the Mccanns did was all the media interest they created. Because this is what is going to be the fall of them!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:15 am
Morning all.
I have to say that, while I have no interest in the McCann’s story whatsoever - And why should I? She wasn’t my kid and I’ve never ever met these people - I do enjoy reading the daily shit slinging festival on this site. Whenever I have nothing important to so, I know I can come here and have a good old chuckle at the wild speculations, armchair psychologising and fantastical pleas from emotion or personal incredulity that people rattle off time and again.
If these forums quite so compelling to watch as they are - similar to the way that a multi-car pile up is compelling to watch - I would have to wonder whether any of the regular posters (you know who you are) don’t have anything better to do.
Well thats enough from me for now. Lets open the cages and let the games begin.
Have fun and thanks for all the laughs.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:16 am
Could it be possible that having endured the ridicule of the world (something which has no doubt seriously put their backs up), the Portuguese Police will unleash a case so strong that it will make every single doubter in their ability bow down and worship them for their stirling work or will everyone just say it’s all a big stitch up?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:17 am
* “If these forums quite so compelling”
should read: “If these forums weren’t quite so compelling”. Whoops.
As you were.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:19 am
#7 this not an english lesson so at ease (although some will correct you grammar and language)
September 14th, 2007 at 8:22 am
Never make fun of people with poor English - they can speak 2 languages, you can’t…. (my Grandfathers favourite sermon)
September 14th, 2007 at 8:27 am
(10) And, what’s more, the more fluent you are in the other language, the more mistakes you make in your own!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:28 am
Sorry, I was referring to (9)
September 14th, 2007 at 8:30 am
Another day - another pointless Anorak forum. Still, like all the other sad acts, I shall be on here from time to time during the day, adding a little fuel to the fire.
What about you Toni, will you be here today? Tonight’s the big one for us my dear - and I believe there’s a game of rugby on as well.
Gerry hasn’t hit the blog since the 10th - probably because by law he is “unable to comment on the case” - still I wasn’t aware he ever used the blog for that. It seemed more like a lifestyle magazine, what with the travel, health and fashion tips he offered - so come on Gezza, what’s Kate’s autumn wardrobe going to be like? Hope it’s not stripes or arrows.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:39 am
Morning all, I can’t believe that you have been here for so long!!
Has anyone seen the Telegraph?? Apparently, according to that paper, Madeleine died from an overdose!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:41 am
Teddy and Toni - how do you think the bokke will fair.
By the way # 9 no one was making fun of anuyone wiff poor english - the exact oppostie actually.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:41 am
Perhaps the PJ are using the media to test out new theories. Secrecy laws prohibit them from discussing the case, so when the media writes “sources close to the investigation reveal…etc.” either it’s something concocted by the writer or it’s someone in the PJ breaking the law.
Perhaps someone in the PJ leaks this to the press to see how it shakes out. They want to see how the family responds, then they’ll move forward or move to another theory depending on the reaction. If that’s what is going on, wouldn’t that mean the police are not above breaking the law?
If the police are not above breaking the law then why is it a stretch to suggest the police would try to stitch somebody up? I don’t care what nation they are from, police have been known to bend the rules the world over.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:46 am
I have had a thought on this decomposing body thing. IF the body WAS in another apartment, the air con could have been left on high, so that the decomposition was slowed down……..a bit like the freezer.
Remembering back, air con man was on holiday the first week in May……he SAID he was going to Whitby but who knows………………
September 14th, 2007 at 8:46 am
And guess who is going to win the rugby South Africa, of course. Stop dreaming!!!!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:47 am
The theories are getting worse. An accomplice has now apparently weighted down and dumped her little body out to sea.
I, and I’m sure many people can only take a rational view on all this. All though some theories of what happened to her with the McCanns having some sort of involvement with her disappearance are possibilites some peoples theories are absolutely preposterous.
There seems to be a lot of leaks to the Portuguese press and now it would seem to the French. They’ve come from somewhere. It’s almost like there’s a bit of collusion going on.
With all this speculation my gut feeling is the McCanns had no part in Maddys disappearance however the giving of some sort of sedative on that night does make sense. The McCanns are holding the guilt of not only leaving the tots on their own but also making it easier for someone to take her.
The PJ have a theory backed by reportedly some good evidence. However they now want Kates diarys to further back all this up!?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the PJ ARE guilty of a conspiracy with regard to the evidence against the McCanns. They have good reason to. And its no more far fetched than the McCanns killing their own daughter.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:49 am
So the McCann’s like partying, pills & marathon running - who doesn’t?
Gerry’s brother works for Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. Maybe they have a lot of colorful samples in decorative bowls, dishes & seashells. I hope the maid cleared these away before Kate’s invited guests from social workers arrived.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:49 am
Garth - the PJ already have Skeletor’s diary, they needed permission to use it as evidence.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:54 am
So this is the start of the public relations campaign to win back the public for K & G. Perhaps they should not have let it slip before hand, as the ‘overdose’ claim will surely win more column inches that G’s athletic prowes and their discussions over another child (read: of course the twins weren’t too much for Kate she wanted another one!!)
I LOVE IT!!!
ps took my youngest’s teddy to work - but unfortunatley not many people die in hospitals nowadays….must all registered with K’s practice!!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:55 am
Hey , YOU ALL. Stop this shitt now.Shame on you. Maddie is still gone. No body to prove she is dead. So she is still ALIVE to me.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:58 am
Amanda @ 22
Madeleine is still safe & alive in the McCann’s warped minds as well. That’s why they don’t feel the need to search for her.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:59 am
HEY AMANDA SOUTH AFRICA
No one here has said that she IS dead, all we are doing is expressing an opinion.
An opinion is neither right nor wrong, as that is all it is…..an opinion.
We are also advancing theories as to what MIGHT have happened, we are not stating facts and saying anything DEFINATELY happened.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:59 am
Garth (18) Don’t really agree - I don’t think you can take seriously anything that isn’t quoted with the name of the person who said it and, even then, it depends. Too many “sources close to the police”, ex-inspector/detective …..”. Like the famous Moita Flores, ex-PJ inspector, whose predictions as to what is going to happen haven’t actually been too hot. But he considered credible because he’s an ex-PJ and the mayor of Santarem. He is also a TV scriptwriter!!!
September 14th, 2007 at 9:01 am
I hope that the pj are right and that she did die from an overdose, because at least she was not ‘ hurt’ and would not have known about it.
THe other possibilities do not bear thinking about…..
September 14th, 2007 at 9:04 am
Morning all.
How many of you are like me. Fed up with the terms ‘Our sources’ and ‘a Police source’. They could mean anything and be anyone.
The limited information actually released by the police amounts to very little by way of conslusive evidence of the McCanns doing anything wrong other than leaving the children alone in the flat.
The DNA evidence cannot possibly show that Madeline was ever in the hire car. There simply wasn’t enough of it.
The body fluid was trace evidence, meaning it could have come from any one of the McCanns. The hair could have come from a hair brush after the McCanns went to the beach. The majority of people put bags used on the beach in the boot to save getting sand in the passenger compartment of the car.
The percentage value placed on the DNA evidence is a myth, the labs in Birmingham do not work in percentages. A spokesperson for the labs stated categorically in an interview that they match markers in DNA and any written report merely confirms how many markers were found.
The sniffer dog detect scent, but although they are trained to dectect specific scents, there is no possible way of telling what scent a dog has become excited over. It is then up to police to find factual evidence linked to the smell, yet they have found nothing.
Dogs get very excited when they smell aniseed, its a natural reaction. Many sweets given to children contain aniseed so who is to say that all the dogs really smelt was a child’s sweet on clothing.
What factual evidence is there that conclusively proof Madeline is even dead. - None
What evidence is there that proves Madeline was even in the apartment on the night of May 3rd - None
What evidence is there that Madeline was abducted - None
The truth is no one knows the facts.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:05 am
If she died from an overdose, why is there blood in the apartment? Did she haemorrage? Is it from her grazed knee? Is she hidden somewhere, to be “found” at a later date by someone who’s in on all this? If she’s found you can expect the book/ movie to be a huge seller ensuring the McWest’s oops, I meant the McCanns will be made for life. This might explain the lack of emotion shown, how do you grieve for someone you know is not dead at all? They’re not trained actors after all.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:07 am
unless my ears are deceiving me, radio 4 just said ‘thank you philomena hall’ to the macs new pr bloke
September 14th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Morning Angry, good point Veres.
I think once the PJ get Inspector Clouseau and JB Fletcher in as consultants, the case will be wrapped up within 1 to 2 hours.
Obviously, the PJ are awaiting the Portuguese government’s OK for this as the expenditure will be HUGE.
