Madeleine McCann: The Lindy Chamberlain Connection, The Tapas 9 And Buried At Sea
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.
DAILY MAIL front page:
• “Judge wants Kate to face new quiz
• Family hits back at ‘disgraceful lies’
• Police: We may never find the body”
The Mail looks at the ‘TAPAS 9’ - “The seven people dining with Gerry and Kate McCann at the Ocean Club tapas bar on the night of May 3 have all steadfastly defended their friends.”
THE TIMES front page: “Madeleine police travel to Britain.” A squad of Portuguese officers will travel to Leicester to work alongside British officers who are investigating the McCanns.
The McCanns are to travel to Portugal next Wednesday.
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE BODY ‘THROWN INTO THE SEA’.”
Stop digging up the church and the pavements of Praia da Luz. The Express has a new development.
“Not enough evidence to charge parents. We need a confession, say police.”
A confession? Back to the church! Put a wire tap on the priest!
A “senior” Portuguese police officer says: “There are a lot of clues, signs and indications, but without more elements it’s impossible for us to determine what happened in those vital hours. Even if the blood and traces gathered in the car or the apartment were confirmed to correspond 100 per cent to the little girl’s DNA, that wouldn’t prove anything.
“Those elements could only confirm – and at the moment we don’t even have that – that the little girl was in the apartment, which is plainly obvious, and in the car. In either of the cases, nothing would prove homicide, just that the body of the little girl had been transferred in the vehicle.”
DAILY MIRROR front page: “MADDY’S BODY MAY NEVER BE FOUND.”
The Mirror cares too much for the poor family McCann to speculate on this most sensitive matter. So it takes a look at what the papers are saying Portugal.
Notes Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias: “The police admit the body doesn’t now exist. Readers learn: “One of the most credible possibilities would involve the body having been thrown in a sack of stones at sea from a yacht.”
But the McCanns hired a car…
“Another paper, 24 Horas, reports that detectives may be relying on the McCanns making a confession,” notes the Mirror, with compassion.
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE – DID MUM CONFESS?” And: “police to quiz priest.”
We knew it. The priest. And haul the Pope in. Do not forget the Pope.
THE SUN front page: “COPS FEAR BODY WON’T BE FOUND. MADDIE ‘DUMPED IN The SEA’.”
Not the Holy See. The Mediterranean Sea.
The Sun notes: “A body weighed down with stones and dumped in deep water from a boat several miles out, however, would simply disappear.”
A friend of the McCanns says how the couple feel Portuguese cops are “playing a game with them”. She says: “They are very frustrated — they really do not know what is going on.”
The pal says: “Gerry and Kate feel police in Portugal have forgotten about their daughter. The investigation has become political and they feel the police are playing a game with them. They just want them to concentrate on finding Maddie.”
THE GUARDIAN:
“Dingo mother backs McCanns.” Possibly the best headline in the case thus far.
“Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, the Australian woman wrongly convicted of murdering her baby after telling police it had been snatched by a dingo, has spoken out in support of the parents of the missing Madeleine McCann, claiming they could suffer a similar miscarriage of justice to her own.”
Did a dingo take Madeleine McCann? Can the Sun get another bag of stones, a mid-range dog and investigate?
Chamberlain’s ordeal was, of course, turned into a film. Her role was given flesh and bone by Meryl Streep. Who will play Kate McCann in Luz Of My Life? The smart money must be on Jennifer Aniston or a blonder Michelle Pfeiffer.
Sam Neill played Lindy’s husband Michael. He could be Gerry, if you squint a bit.

Tiddly Wink,
I can’t sleep yet for worry. Now my Mom is feeling very sick and her kidneys are not functioning. She has hospice but even that doesn’t appear much help at this point. She has held up remarkably and much longer than anyone expected but I am not so sure this time.
Without knowing from one day to the next what to expect, I could disappear from the site for a while but I will check back. Hopefully the situation isn’t as bad as I suspect.
If I can’t find you I will call information and ask for Tiddly Winks in Alaska?
September 18th, 2007 at 7:29 am
Winky,
Someone said tomorrow night Anderson Cooper has a special on the case, CNN.
September 18th, 2007 at 7:25 am
Andrew, you act on things!
I am hesitant to sign anything because I am an American and the case is British.
September 18th, 2007 at 7:05 am
Take a look at the new counter-petition ive made in response to the McCann’s campaign

Sign it if you feel strongly enough
Tell all your chums!

Tiddly Winks,
Possibly tomorrow I will find book. Today has been a busy kind of limbo but tomorrow is a new day. Oh, I spoke to someone today who read the book in the past but due to time had difficulty trying to explain. The most I could determine was something about relationships. OHhhhhhh
As for Faulkner, some of my mother’s family history appeared to go there, marriage, but not directly that I could tell at quick glance. I didn’t spend much time on that line at the time and haven’t had a chance recently. I have spent more time observing art in the area than what is written. I do like to read but usually only what is truth or supposed truth. Odd, but my Dad is the same.
I meant to ask you what you meant about being a Cracker? No, not a clue!
What do you do in Alaska or is that a wise question to ask? The big sky isn’t Montana? Coast or ? I love salmon and buy a lot of wild at Whole Foods in New Orleans.
Too bad people aren’t busy on the site tonight. I must wait until all of the people around here go to bed to get any work accomplished. Tomorrow, an early AM hospital wait but later in the day or evening I will check back.
Hopefully some of the regular posters will appear. I haven’t seen Rosemary, Richard, etc. Spudgun appears hanging in longer than Rosemary and she was a trooper.
Later,

I am not buying one word from Mcanns
When in England they are asked questions- they do not answer because ” Portugal low prohibit them from any any disclosure”
When interviewed in Portugal by police- they again choose to not answer - because do not want to help police to fined the child killer.
And who are the idiots that help them with money for covering the murder.

Tiddly Winks,
What do you suppose happened to Madeleine?
September 17th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
314 - David, as my Pa says, you’re a big scalliwagger
Shame on you….lol!!!
I’m off for my morning run. I’m getting a late start - I usually like to get going before dawn. Now the birdies are already up and fed.
When did the Portuguese Police decide they’d never find a body? That’s giving up before even getting started. Where is Scooby-Dooby - Doo when you need him? I say, leave the investigation to the dogs. They’ll do a better job at least!
Ohhh, I am such a little scoundrel, I know it. But please, don’t call me that horrilbe name “Troll”. I have nightmares of those little men living under the bridge when I was a wee lad….the Billy Goat Gruff story, you know? I think the Troll living under the bridge is the equivalent to today’s pedophile for children. I have no doubt that those dirty old men living under the bridge and calling themselves Trolls in Scandinavian Folklore were indeed child snatchers and predators. Evil little people. Ugly too. Poor Billy Goat Gruff. Crossing a bridge in life shouldn’t have been that much trouble. Sort of gives a whole new meaning to that concept. You know?
Shiver me timbers!! I’m getting goose bumps just reminiscing about them…
September 17th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
313 - Oh yes, Patricia. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Mind you, it’s not a “quick read”, because there is a lot to absorb and think about. I’m the kind of reader who likes to savor classics, and sometimes, I find myself re-reading a page over and over before I’m willing to turn the page. I find my interpretations can change this way. Each complete thought is like a prize. When I hear people say “Oh, yeah, I read that book in a day”, I feel they will retain very little of the prose.
Please do read it though, at your leisure. It’s quite an American Classic. If you’ve enjoyed for instance, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, then I’m quite convinced you will love Carson McCulloughs books. She’s got a few others but “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” was her best work.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
So the Portuguese police say they will never find the body. I’m really not supprised, it seems they couldn’t find their own arses if you gave them a flashlight (torch) and a map!
Tiddly Winks is right too, OJ news is all we seem to be getting here in Wisconsin this morning. Not that our local paper even mentioned the Madeleine case much anyway. In the days before digital cable and the internet I remained almost totally unaware of all things British, now at least I get to catch up on what’s happening.
I haven’t decided if that’s a good thing or not
September 17th, 2007 at 10:41 am
Response to Winky,
I will read the book. “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” Maybe I can find it today.
Oh yes, life now in Mississippi.
Winky, I like the name. No, I haven’t been to Alaska but have heard many fishing stories.
Give me a few days to read the book and I will let you know. Thanks for the idea of something to do while sitting in hospital waiting areas today and tomorrow.
Are you always Winky on this site? Having someone chat is like old times talking at school while everyone else is working. People are serious on this site! I will find you.

309 - 310. I’m pleased to learn I was not far off track there.
I knew you were a Dixie chick. Don’t ask me why - I just knew it!!!
I don’t know if you’ve ever read any William Faulkner, but your writing style, no where as prolific or descriptive of course, is similar to his Southern style and believe it or not, it was this that led me to believe you’re a genuine “cracker”.
One of my favorite 20th century writers is Carson McCullers - “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”. I wish they’d make a movie out of that book. It was simply divine reading! The South have produced some of the greatest writers ever.
Me, I’m a Northern Lights native. Do you know where that is? I presume you’ve heard of Alaska and the Pacific NorthWest. Big Sky Country.
Just finished watching the Emmy’s - other than Jon Stewart interjecting some comic relief here and there, it was a terribly boring.
O.J. the sociopath taking center stage on the news today. So no news on the Maddy fornt over here tonight. Throw him in prison and destroy the key. His book is called “If I did it”. I think he was struggling with two other titles:
1) So What if I did it
2) I did it.
Poor Goldman family. They are the biggest victims in all of this.
Almost forgot to mention, my nickname is Winky - remember the little character Winky Dink? Maybe you don’t. But some family members also call me Tiddly Winks to this day!. Either way, the name has followed me into adulthood. Sticking around all these years. Kind of strange to get calls at the office “Is Winky available please”. Things could be worse…
September 17th, 2007 at 4:04 am
I came back on to ask Rosemary about a link about the guy with the boat. The postings on the forum are long now and I can’t remember which one.
September 17th, 2007 at 4:01 am
Tiddly Winks,
Now I didn’t write anything about ya’ll so how did you know? You are close, my dad’s from Alabama and mom from Mississippi, also lived in and love Texas.
Where are you from?
September 17th, 2007 at 3:46 am
Response to Tiddly Winks,
I’m in Dixie.
September 16th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
Pat - Where are you from? I can’t figure out your “accent” for the life of me.
I tend to think it’s the Southern part of the US - I know you’re in the Central Time Zone - so my guess would be that you’re somewhere between Alabama and Texas. My guess would be Texas. But not necessarily native.
Just give me the state or tell me if I’m warm at least….I’m intrigued by the tone of your writing. It’s very “Faulknerish”. Very Southern. Non-linear narrative; stream of consciousness….
But, maybe it’s Florida? So many transplants living down there. Any one could be living in Florida today…..ho hum.
September 16th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
That was me above! For some reason I was logged in to forums and it didn’t show my username here. Is there a reason for this?
Just logged out and it’s given me the option of putting my name here again.
Help meeeeee!

Yeah, just read it. It’s almost as crazy as the article a couple of days ago defending the “fund two” concept.
“marvellous” says Professor whatever his name was from Great Ormond St. Hospital “I will make a donation, its super!” or whatever it was he actually said.
Yeah. Whatever

301.
I think the diversion is not Wilkinson but Tanner covering up for some dubious activity by her charming partner, Russell O’Brien.
Just my hunch based solidly on all the non-facts, inconsistencies, exaggerations & down right fabrications we’ve been given by the unbiased investigative media.
September 16th, 2007 at 11:34 am
I have a question. Jane Tanner insists that she saw Wilikins talking with Gerry and also someone leaving the apartment who was almost certainly the abductor.
Jeremy Wilkins, on the other hand, insists that he did not see Jane Tanner or anyone leaving the McCanns’ apartment. He also insists that he is sure he *would* have seen them had they really been there.
Wilkins was chatting with Gerry for a whole 15 minutes. In that time the abduction was almost certainly taking place.
Could it be that Wilkins was one of a group of abductors whose job it was to keep Gerrry engaged in conversation (and to act as a lookout) while the abduction was going on? Wouldn’t that also explain why he denied seeing anyone coming out of the apartment, and seemed to be keen to cast doubt on Jane Tanner’s claim that someone did as well as her own credibility as a witness?
Just a thought.

Response to Jeeves Good that you try to explain, yes. All I know is the first day mine got a drivers license I almost need the hospital.

293: Judge Judy, Ah what a shame, as I have some vintage year Vermouth in the fridge.
The McCanns rather unfortunately present themselves as medics who are puffed up with their own sense of self-importance (as all too many medics seem to be). That doesn’t make them guilty of any kind of a crime, of course. The trouble is that when something as serious as this happens, we do naturally tend to look very closely at the parents. We place them under the microscope, as it were, and examine the chinks in their armour. Neglect becomes criminal negligence, and lack of displays of emotion culpability. A little over-confidence becomes something more sinister, and so on and so forth.
The truth is that all of us have frailties and inadequacies, and if we look hard enough all of us have idiosyncracies too that could suggest that in a situation such as this, we too are in some way “suspect”.
Everyone has a different temperament. Kate’s is merely typical of the reserve of many Brits. I recently watched a video about the British Airways 747 jet that lost power ro all four of its engines before recovering power just in time to safely land. At one point all of the (mainly British) passengers “knew” they were going to die. But did they get emotional and scream? Amazingly they were as quiet as mice. The reason given by a witness who had been on board the flight was that they had quickly become resigned to their fate. That typifies the British response to disaster in general, and I believe that Kate is simply manifesting that very same syndrome.
What many people might not also realise is that the McCanns have been coached by the police and psychologists themselves as to how they should conduct themselves public–with dignity and decorum, presumably so as not to allow the abductor to believe that he’s defeated them. They will also have been coached in anger and grief management to prevent them from going to pieces.
All of that has to be taken on board.

Response to Judge Judy,
Earlier I forgot to ask how do you suppose two people, in theory, could be capable of walking around, heads held high, if they know Madeleine is not alive? Not only NO but NO WAY can I imagine ever disposing of a body much less collecting money, selling bracelets, misleading and taking advantage… NO WAY going on television NO… If the McCanns are guilty of any of what has been implied and they escape the fact some people have posted that they suffered enough by losing Madeleine but?? Considering the accidental death theory how to explain TWO people could be capable? So, my thought is YES, if true, these people are doing a knock out job looking out for themselves in a very bold and deceptive manner that there is NO way I can comprehend is possible. BUT, I would NOT be able to do any of what I have observed but as a result I doubt very seriously I’ll ever be in that position. So, the real bottom line is I am especially thankful that I don’t even know one person who would assist in such. On top of asking how can TWO people be capable I also ask how would TWO people capable find MANY to assist, theory, in cover up?

Response to Judge Judy, Ohhh I tried to think of some reason for the jogging, maybe a way to cope. NO way can I relate to it but I don’t know how to explain what others do. One day after Ylenia disappeared I did remark that I doubt her parents were jogging and keeping a log of it.
Judge Judy I do believe in time I will have a grip what I think. For now I am still in a state of disbelief…
I felt the parents were obviously distressed early on and not without feeling. The part that is curious to me is when the dog study was done, death theory strong, there was no sign of upset. I would have been hoping to find a live child and the results of that study would have been very distressing. Although I might have still hoped or found reason to hope for a live child, I would consider who or what could have happened if I knew nothing of the circumstances.
Bottom line, I would be incapable of carrying out the televised looking for live child if I knew there wasn’t one. That aspect, if true, blows me away and I will need to watch the second time around to make sure I am not imagining things.
September 16th, 2007 at 4:25 am
Chloe,
You asked somewhere if any missing child has ever been found because someone recognized the child. I know of a few cases all of them in the US. The most recent highly publicized was the snatching of Elizabeth Smart. She was kidnapped from her home at night by a deranged religious nut who wanted to “marry” her (he was already married but this was Utah where some people still practice polygamy.) She was spotted by a very astute citizen (he had Elizabeth wearing a veil and long gown) who called the police and is said to be okay now.
More recent but less publicized was the violent snatching and eventual return of ‘Baby Abby’. A mother whose own infant had been stillborn stabbed another new mother and kidnapped the infant. I believe it was the perp’s sister-in-law who knowing of the recent baby napping became suspicious of the mother’s (her brother’s wife) story and the true identity of the baby and notified police.
Oh and at the beginning of this year a young boy (Ben Ownby) had been kidnapped and I think a neighbor became suspicious of this boy’s sudden appearance at the apartment complex and thought he resembled the recently napped youngster. This new boy’s “father” also had another older “son” (Shawn) who never appeared to go to school. The increasingly suspicious neighbor called the authorities who immediately quesioned the 2 boys and their supposed father only to discover not only was the younger boy the newly napped child they were looking for. But that the older boy, Shawn had been kidnapped some 5 years earlier.
So there are success stories. (Although since a couple of weeks ago I regrettably no longer believe Madeleine will be one of them.)

I am desperate to know if the twins push-chair has been forensically tested.
That push-chair goes everywhere with them.
What if they cleaned their hair-brush in the wheel-well but transported small parcels of freshly-chopped Madeleine to the zoo and the beach. The twins always seem to look strained in the push-chair like they have a parcel in there with them.
I am concerned at their sheeny-shiny appearances. I would be on tranquilisers and in my bed not wanting to talk to anybody. They appear like TV stars every day loving the attention.
Slowly slowly catches the monkey. The police are just waiting for somebody to make a move.
I hope that Kate and Gerry don’t commit suicide or we will never get to the bottom of this.
If they had accidentally over-dosed Madeleine simply because Kate thought Gerry had not medicated her and vice versa, therefore doubling her dosage, they could not have admitted it to the police.
They would have lost their jobs, their home and the twins would have been taken into care. They had everything to lose. It’s shocking and neglectful not to have been within ear-shot of those children, never mind giving one of them something to make them sleep! Outrageous!
Doctors have methodical and calculating minds and have amazing rationale in extreme situations. Gerry is also overqualified at butchery and would know how to place tourniquets to minimise blood gushes. He could have had the job boxed off in no time or hidden the body for a short while.
He is obviously a story-teller looking at his daily blog. It beats me how he can write such bollocks. His mundane comments reveal a lot about his personality. Creative thinking leads to creative writing and then possibly activity. If she’s daft enough or self-indulgent enough to keep a diary………. Let’s have read of that then!
We have two self-obsessed, selfish and dangerous individuals here who want a lavish life-style. Too many doctors and surgeons think they are above the law.
I reminded mine that his profession is only a descendant of butchery and to keep his head from up his own arse when all this McCann stuff broke - mainly because he was displaying the same disdain and using condescending tones as Kate and Gerry do.
Even when they talk to the TV it’s as if they don’t think that we lesser mortals know how to think. I think Gerry wanted to be an actor-writer like Shakespeare and Madeleine sees herself as a could-have been model. I’ve never seen such cat-walk posturing and pouting. What manipulative tripe they both are.
How the Kate one could say she hangs about dead bodies in her holiday gear is just about the most contrived and pathetic excuse yet! It even beat the one about getting the scent of death off the cuddle-cat. My arse! She wouldn’t be able to smell that anyway. She should have wanted to smell Madeleine on it for the rest of her life. How simple do surgeons think we are!
Playing God when you are a doctor on your own territory is one thing, but to play God on holiday in a foreign country has turned out to have a different set of rules.
Sleeping tablets to keep a child asleep is despicable and could have had long-term consequences. I wonder who prescribed them? Need we ask?
They have it sussed. They seem terribly comfortable that the body won’t be found. They still say they think Madeleine is alive because they are sure Madeleine’s body will never turn up.
Shipman had the same arrogant body-language - until his computer revealed………

282 - Well Said Tiana!!
I have not heard anyone, since my college days, discuss Reformation Europe, and speak so knowledgeably about the Protestant Reformation. I’m impressed. You’re also absolutely correct about the Jews converting to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition.
I had a professor in college - who’s name was Luther Petersen - and who taught a class on Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Quite appropos, wouldn’t you say? I loved this guy. He was also, (suprise) Lutheran, from Minnesota, where many Scandanavians and Germans immigrants settled hence the huge population of Lutherans living out in the Minnesota/Wisconsin Plains today.
He shed a whole new light on religion for me and a new way of looking at Christianity beyond the insular world of Catholicism - which being a bit of a Catholic School rebel, was never something that I fully embraced, and the feeling was probably mutual. Although I never converted, out of respect for my family and the struggles they’ve had to maintain their faith, today I am a “social” member or our local Episcopal Church.. But, I will most likely, always keep loose ties to Catholicism, whether any one likes it or not. Besides, the High Episcopal Church is much more conseravative than most Catholic Churches in America today. (Although I go to a “low” Episcopal Church).
But the one area where I must correct you is that it was not Henry VIII, but Martin Luther who was responsible for initiating the Protestant Reformation in Europe. Martin Luther began the process of converting, or rather reforming all of Germany to Lutheran after he saw what wicked things were taking place with the Papacy and in Rome - especially the sale of indulgences, which pushed things over the edge for Luther with the Catholic Church. In Roman Catholic theology, an “indulgence” is the remission of punishment because a sin already committed has been forgiven; the indulgence is granted by the church when the sinner confesses and receives absolution. When an indulgence is given, the church is extending merit to a sinner from its Treasure House of Merit, an accumulation of merits it has collected based on the good deeds of the saints. These merits could be bought and sold.
In return, M.L. stirred up much controversy with his “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences,” which came to be known as The 95 Theses.
As a consequence, Luther was excommunicated by Leo X on January 3, 1521.
Luther was also an anti-semite and is known for his writings about the Jews, the nature and consequences of which are the subject of scholarly debate. His statements that Jews’ homes should be destroyed, their synagogues burned, money confiscated, and liberty curtailed were revived and given widespread publicity by the Nazis in Germany in 1933–45. As a result of this and his revolutionary theological views, his legacy remains controversial.
I’m inclined to agree with the theory that organized religion, along with ignorance, is the root of all evil.
So, how is this all relevant to the Mccanns?? Someone said that they are hiding behind their Catholicism and in their own delusional minds, they believe that they are forgiven for their “alleged” heinous acts against their daughter. Perhaps, they have embraced the sale of indulgences theory and they are going to literally pay for their sins through a sale of indulgences with money from the fund??? Stranger ideas have been posted than this……and at this hour, I’ll believe just about any theory put forth.
