Madeleine McCann: DNA Jigsaw, Torture And The Twilight Zone
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE DNA PUTS PARENTS IN FRAME. British experts insist their tests are valid”
Page 7: “DNA tests ‘fill in more pictures of jigsaw’” – A source close to the investigation provides the headline quote. But what has been found is unsaid, and how it involves Kate and Gerry McCann
“New police chief is accused of torture” – Chief inspector Tavares Almeida is to face charges of “beating up a robbery suspect in custody”. The Express says this is a “torture scandal”. The alleged victim – who was accused of being part of a gang that sexually abused children and coerced them into violent muggings - was acquitted
Mr Almeida was dubbed “Kate’s Tormenter”, possibly by the Express today
DAILY MAIL page 8: “New DNA tests ‘put the McCanns back under suspicion’”
The McCanns, both “doctors” are said to be “extremely distressed by the claims”
DAILY MIRROR page 7: “COPS GAVE UP SEARCH THREE MONTHS AGO”
“Investigation in tatters as second detective accused of violence”
THE SUN front page: “McCANNS’ AGONY – MADDIE: NEW DNA LINK TO KATE”
British forensic scientists “are said to believe tests on fresh clues support earlier findings that led to the McCanns being declared suspects”
Page 4: “McCANNS ‘LIVING IN A TWILIGHT WORLD’”
Clarence Michelle says: “We had reports that DNA had proved ‘inconclusive’ and even it had put the McCanns in the clear.”
Reports from whom is not reported
“Now there are reports that the DNA is making them look suspect. There are wholly innocent explanations for any material police may or may not have found. This just goes to show what a twilight zone we are operating in”
The Twilight Zone – wasn’t that the name of the TV show with the sting in the tail?
DAILY STAR front page: “MADDIE: NW DNA DAMNS PARENTS. Brit police find shock evidence”
But they have not been arrested. The McCanns are just suspects. How is this damning?
Pages 8 and 9: “MADDIE: SHOCK NEW DNA CLUE TO PARENTS – Boffins say cops on the right trail”
“Torture rap cop” – Tavares Almeida is 48
DAILY TELEGRAPH page 9: “Portuguese police ‘right to focus on McCanns’”
A British source says “Everything that has emerged indicates that the investigation is focusing where it should”
A British detective says the case is being “done back to front” – the parents should have been looked at first. The mantra is: “Clear the ground from under your feet”

This must be the first time in recorded tabloid history that a policeman allegedly beating up a suspected paedophile is regarded as anything other than a hero. Could we have some sort of award?

Something this case has shown is that the tv, news, papers, morning tv, etc……………
Are full of manilpulative crap!
I will never fully believe anything ever again
I am not so gullable to have ever believe the tabloids, but I had some respect for the BBC news

i’ve asked myself for some time now, “just what kind of world do gerry and kate live in?” after reading their statements and listening to them in interviews i’ve found myself sad and confused. thankfully the sun has finally answered my perplexing question. now if they could please explain what worlds amy winehouse and paris hilton reside on i will be able to free my mind from such heavy questions and live life fully once again.

“Daily Express” readers must be getting seriously dizzy by now. What motivates them to keep buying?

I watched Mitchell on GMTV this morning. He was wearing a yellow ribbon….I think he has a crush on KM. He comes across as a lovesick protector.
But really, he did look ridiculous and insincere. I can’t believe he had a top job in media. Then again, was it in the BBC?
I think this case is going to get really interesting. There’s definitely seems to be something afoot re forensics otherwise we’d have all the results by now. Can’t wait to hear what the “innocent explanations” will be. Especially if it’s of a type described by Interloper on the Paulo Reiss thread - type that could only come from a corpse.
Another thing I’ve been thinking (-: is if there is a genetic marker for Maddie’s eye condition, or anyother related condition that we are not aware of.
Someone has probably already covered that.
October 9th, 2007 at 10:41 am
Here we go again. You cant build a case on DNA alone!
Where is the evidence/motives?
It is not enough to construct a case just on DNA.
If this were so than any of us could be made suspects for any range of crimes.
Found this link in People Mag. It gives again an explaination for the chilly appearance of the parents during interviews which they have reiterrated many times themselves.

I did not know comical clarrie was a world reknowned DNA specialist. I wonder why Dr Kate McCann suddenly wants to answer all the questions and can have a perfectly innocent explanation for all of this. These guys are getting more laughable by the minute.

slyfox, do you happen to know the blog entry you mention on gazeta digital?

The one question which nobody seems able to answer properly is if the McCanns did kill Maddie, what on earth did they do with the body for all that time before they alledgedly moved her in their hire car? Silly theories such as stuffing her in a fridge just don’t make any sense but if you assume that the PJ are correct in their assumption that G and K killed their daughter, surely they have to come up with a reasonable account for the 25 days between the killing and the disposal.
If the nearby supermarket had reported the McCanns suddenly buying box loads of bin bags or air freshener, then we would have reason to be suspicious, but as far as I know, there were no such suspicious movements.
Even after all this time, I still can’t make up my mind what has happened to the poor girl, apart from that she was dreadfully neglected by her parents at the start of this whole sorry episode.

Criminal Profiling Topic of the Day: Another “Ludicrous” Theory in the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
A short time ago, I made a suggestion that the British police might investigate the McCann’s residence (and the residences of friends and family of the McCanns) for the possibility that the body of Madeleine McCann might have been transported into England. Some folk immediately labeled the theory ridiculous, or ludicrous, as the McCanns would say. How, they asked, could the McCanns carry a putrefying and decaying body in a suitcase and get it on and off of an airplane? I understand that this sounds mighty foolish to many who don’t work in the field of criminal investigation and profiling and they think Pat Brown is a nutcase par excellence!
Let me clear up a few misconceptions: first of all, it is a theory, not a fact. Secondly, a theory is useful to stimulate investigative avenues not yet thought of that might lead to evidence that would otherwise have been overlooked. Third, offering one theory does not mean it is the only theory or even the best theory. It is far more likely that Madeleine’s body is somewhere underground in Portugal or Spain or in the ocean. These are simpler places to bury a body. It may be that the body has just not yet been discovered. This is very often the case; while rumors and theories abound about white slavery and porn rings and sightings are made of the victim all over the world, the body of the poor thing has simply been lying in a ravine for the past few months! Sometimes bodies fall into strange and difficult places or are well-buried for years. Then, one day a jogger trips over the body or a farmer turns over some soil to plant his corn, and, voila! The victim has been found.
Maddy McCann will likely be found in a similar way (unless someone did one heck of a job of hiding her). Whether a child predator took Maddy or the parents did her in, she will probably one day just be found. However, there is nothing wrong with being proactive and trying to find her sooner than later. Therefore, the police should follow all leads and theories. IF they find her sooner, than not all the evidence with the body or within the body will have been destroyed by time and nature.
So, search in Portugal and Spain and any other place one can think of. And, yes, search in England: Maddy just might be there.
Would it really be possible for one of the McCanns to cart the body of their daughter back to England? Yes, absolutely. Because of the climate in Portugal, it is possible that should they have buried Maddy in a shallow grave in a sandy substrate, her body would have mummified. Mummification is a desiccation of the corpse where the fluids drain into the ground and the rest of the body dries up. There is relatively little odor associated with a mummified body.
If this occurred, the body would be easier to transport; it would be lighter and drier and lacking the horrible smell of a corpse. Such a body could easily be placed in a sealed bag and placed in a suitcase. Screening of stowed luggage is not likely to uncover a body inside of a suitcase and when the traveler reaches the other end and goes through customs, they enter the “Have nothing to declare line,” and just walk through (unless they exhibit concerning behavior that raises a red flag and launches a search of the luggage). As to the McCanns, I seriously doubt they were searched upon arrival, not with all the press surrounding them and the mass of curious onlookers, reporters, and VIPS lurking about.
‘
IF the McCanns were involved and IF Maddy’s body was brought home, when this would have happened is another question. Unfortunately, only those inside the organization would (we hope) know the truth about the McCann’s movements. For example, Gerry McCann returned to England on June 19, just four days after an exhaustive search for Madeleine was called off. This search was in an arid, desolate area (the kind of climate which might encourage the mummification of a body) near a town called Odiaxere. A letter from an unknown sender had stated she could be found there in a shallow grave. Four days later, Gerry is on a plane home. I don’t know if he took any luggage with him, anything more than a rucksack (which I don’t know the size of). He only stayed for the day, purportedly to attend some meetings. He claims he had his wallet stolen while getting money from an ATM and later that evening, the wallet was mailed back to him. A rather peculiar story that I wonder might not be a cover for the reason he was late to his meetings; he ostensibly spent the time calling credit card companies to cancel his credit cards.
If I were the police investigator, I would follow up this lead. I would want to know what luggage Gerry took with him to England. I would try to see if there was any proof to the wallet theft story. I would find out if he had any “alone” time on the trip. I would find out if he made those phone calls to the credit card companies and if he really got money from an ATM. I would find out exactly where he was that day through any evidence of his movements (phone call tracking, receipts, witnesses, etc.). I would want to know if anyone met him, especially anyone who he could have transferred a package from one suitcase to another.
I would check all the McCann trips and look for possibly ways for them to transport a body away from Portugal. And, again, I would look for all possible places within Portugal or neighboring countries as possible places to hide or bury a body. I would check the possibility of a burial at sea.
If I were the Portuguese police, I would be following all leads, even those that lead away from the McCanns. It never hurts to be thorough. The point is to recover Madeleine, dead or alive, and bring justice to those that hurt her. In the end, it doesn’t matter which theory is correct (except as an educational tool for future investigations). It only matters that the case is solved.

++++++++++++++
Surely part of the complexity here is the whole PR/media spin campaign? “A source close to whomever today suggested that the world may in fact not be the shape we have all come to believe.” Quickly translates into “SHOCK HEADLINE: THE EARTH IS FLAT” – The Mars in an EXCLUSIVE interview with a source close to whomever can reveal that the much respected Dr KnowItAll is member of the Flat Earth Society…. Quickly followed by a denial from another source allegedly close to the much respected Dr KnowItAll..
No one knows who released the first comments. Can’t prove it, but it’s a fairly simple PR trick to brief against yourself via an anonymous source so that you can then publish a rebuttal. The whole point being that it was YOU all along. Imagine the discussion at the daily briefing…
A: I’m worried about this DNA in the car thing.. we need to undermine all their forensic data somehow.
B: Well, that’s ok, we’ll just publish a press release denying it
A: We can’t
B: Why not?
A: Because we are bound by Portuguese secrecy laws and we can’t tell anyone about the DNA in the sloppy jalopy so no one other than us and the police actually know about it
B: Oh yeah, sorry I forgot…. Hang I know.. I’ll whip up a ‘leak’ about the DNA thing and get one of my contacts to say they have a source close to police investigation
A: How will that help?
B: Oh do keep up! Because then it WILL be in the public domain and we can release our own ‘leak’ from a source close to the ‘family’ rubbishing the DNA thing
A: Oh brilliant! Hey, can we blame it on that fat greasy cop? I really don’t like him. He gets longer lunches than I do
B: Yeah sure, leave it to me. Anyone else you’d like me to do a hatchet job on while we’re at it?
A: Well… that Anorak guy and his mates are becoming a real PIA, and as you know, I can usually handle myself in this area but they’re beginning to hurt me
B: Yeah sure, consider it done… Er, could you stop doing that with my pen please… Oh don’t bother, I’ll get a new one.. Can I put it on expenses?
All complete fantasy of course!

Yankee Interloper Says:

“I’ve been lurking on this site for weeks, fascinated by the British reaction to this case, and here are some observations I feel compelled to share:
….Moving on to science, which for some reason we in the US had been led to believe Brits were good at:
-”Sniffer dogs” are considered in the United States to be police officers equivalent to human ones. This is because they are incredibly reliable and don’t know how to lie. It is naive to think that just because your pet gets excited at lots of smells, a trained canine officer is similarly easy to distract. If the sniffer dogs say they smelled cadaverine or blood, their indicating they have found these scents is evidence by itself, as any officer’s observation would be.
-There are some bodily fluids that don’t get outside the body unless serious bodily harm has occurred, such as cerebrospinal fluid. If you find cerebrospinal fluid, and the person it came from is not in a hospital, you can be pretty sure they are dead.
-Please take this to heart and apply it to all future situations: WHENEVER you come across someone who has built a miraculous machine of their own devise, which is based on “secret” scientific principles that they are not willing to explain to you, go ahead and assume they are lying to you. You do not need to waste any further effort trying to collect anecdotal reports of their success or failure in the past, or imagining what incredible breakthrough the “secret” scientific principles will be revealed to be. It’s a trick. Get an axe.
-DNA testing can be done two ways, a quick way, where they test only a portion of the points of information in the DNA, and a long way, where they examine all the points of information in the DNA that they can. Apparently, the original DNA tests were quick tests on samples so degraded that they could only get 80 percent accuracy, and your forensic science service is now conducting the longer type of test, which will be much more accurate even with the degradation. This is taking a long time because they are doing a lot more work. Please be patient, nobody is trying to stall anybody, this is just how science works.
….As for the case itself, the thing that makes it so fascinating is that all explanations are equally implausible. Given the facts as they are presented to us, the McCanns simply did not have the time or the materials to hide and then preserve the body (no, “clingfilm” would NOT work, please just trust me on this and do not try it at home with small dead animals, that’s digusting), yet also the chances of a stranger abduction in a luxury resort are astronomically low. It is a mystery! Clearly, some crucial facts are missing.
However, luckily we live in an age where DNA testing will allow us to rule some things out. If Madeleine’s DNA is in that hire car, there is absolutely no question the parents are guilty of disposing of her body, and thus probably of killing her, accidentally or not. If the DNA is not present, then we’ll probably never know for sure just what happened, and the likeliest explanation may be that she wandered down to the sea and drowned or fell in a construction hole and was covered by falling debris.
October 9th, 2007 at 10:59 am
Tracey,
The best theory that I have seen on this site is that the body was moved soon after and not the 25 days that as we assumed because of the DNA stories. It has been suggested that the DNA was actually found in another car available to the party at the time and maybe the police just let the McCanns assume that it was the car they hired after 25 days. Could this be why they said they were being “stitched up”?

I think that’s a really good theory. i’ve been tyring to figure out how they could get rid of the smell, burying a bod in sand would do that. and I don’t think it’s silly to imagine GM taking her mummified corpse back to UK.
I’ve also been tying to figure out the significance of Cuddle cat. One (barmy? but everyhting in this case is Barmy! ) thought was that maybe it is a sign to the Tapas9 accomplices that they have still have the body..dundun duun…

“Frankly, some of the headlines this morning are a complete disgrace.”
Frankly, the headlines since the whole saga began have been a complete disgrace.
Seriously though. Attacking the UK press after they’ve appeared to swallow pretty much everything the McCanns mouthpieces have said could be a wrong move and may come back to haunt Mr Mitchell.
Still a word in the ear of some editors from someone on high should soon have them all toeing the “party” line and back bashing the PJ soon.
Oh, it’s already begun again. Well I never.
