Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann Suspects Robert Murat, Morocco And A Prediction

MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann.

THE MIRROR: “Kate McCann: Murat must tell us the truth”

“Kate McCann has told friends she is still suspicious of Robert Murat after another person claimed he saw him the night her daughter Madeleine vanished”

Robert Murat is the suspect. So too Kate McCann. Finger pointing…

Says a friend of the McCanns: “Kate has always felt there are questions concerning Murat that need to be answered. Gerry doesn’t know whether he is involved but Kate has always been suspicious”

Adds another friend: “The police have never said this is definitely the man. But they think he obviously has some questions to answer”

Like the McCanns

THE SUN: “Maddie search gets twin focus”

“The stepped-up search for Madeleine McCann had a twin focus last night – on Robert Murat and Morocco”

Always Morocco. Always Murat

A British barrister has “revealed he saw a man looking strikingly like suspect Murat lurking near Kate and Gerry McCann’s holiday flat on the night Maddie vanished”

Another witness? “He is the NINTH witness to challenge the ex-pat’s alibi that he was with his mum at their nearby home in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz”

Can they swear on it? Is it a fact that Murat was there, out that night?

One fact we do know, and the sun confirms: Kate and Gerry McCann are “doctors”

“Last night it was revealed Kate McCann has always been suspicious of Murat. A source close to her said: ‘She feels there are questions concerning him that need to be answered. There is a body of evidence contrary to what he is saying.” What evidence? What body?

DAILY EXPRESS: “NOW EIGHT WITNESSES POINT THE FINGER AT SUSPECT MURAT”

One less witness than in the Sun. So not all bad news for Murat

“The latest person to cast doubt on Murat’s alibi is an unnamed British barrister who claims he saw the expat hanging around near the Ocean Club half an hour after Madeleine was reported missing”

Kate McCann wonders. A friend of hers says: “They read everything, like everybody else, and think ‘that’s a bit odd’.But because Kate is naturally more wary than Gerry she has occasionally said ‘Perhaps he has some questions to answer.’ But Murat is not a subject of discussion all the time. They do not sit there at home fretting about him”

Not like Sun readers

“PORTUGAL TRIP ‘TO BOOST MADELEINE HUNT’ - KATE and Gerry McCann want to return to Portugal in the New Year in a desperate bid to keep their daughter’s memory alive”

BELFAST TELEGRPAH: “McCanns not planning to visit Portugal”

But…

“Gerry and Kate McCann, both formal suspects in their daughter’s disappearance, will only do so if Portuguese police want to question them there again, said Clarence Mitchell”

DAILY MAIL: “Kate McCann: My suspicions over Murat’s alibi on the night Madeleine vanished”

“Kate McCann is suspicious about Robert Murat’s alibi for the night her daughter Madeleine vanished, it was revealed yesterday. The mother of three has confided to friends she believes there are questions about the British expat that need to be answered”

Any evidence? Or just a feeling?

“Mrs McCann’s doubts emerged after the Daily Mail reported that seven witnesses claim to have seen Mr Murat near the McCanns’ holiday apartment on the night of May 3”
Seven. It’s going down. Mr Murat may be buoyed…

Gerry McCann is a “consultant cardiologist”

DAILY RECORD: “Maddie Parents Have Hogmanay In Scotland”

McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell says: “They are just spending the evening quietly with relatives”. Fact!

THE INDEPENDENT: “Dominic Lawson: If you want to know what’s going to happen in 2008, there are lots of experts who can’t tell you - Perhaps the best commentary on the futility of forecasting is provided by the film ‘Being There’”

“I predict that Madeleine McCann will not be discovered (thus preserving an entire industry in speculation). I predict that no Western political leader will mention the plight of Tibet in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics. I predict that Sarah Brown will not invite Cherie Blair round for tea at No. 10. And I predict that Martin Amis will not convert to Islam”

    SKY TV’s NEW YEARS RESOLUTION?

Has SKY TV made a New Year’s Resolution?

To open up debate about the ‘disappearance’ of Madeleine McCann?

They’ve just opened up a comments page, following a blog by Martin Brunt.

And here’s the first comment! And there’s lots more.

    ===============================

    QUOTE

We now have a report by two British sisters who claim to have seen two men on a balcony of an apartment at Ocean Club?

We now also know from Martin Brunt’s report that these apartments are not all owned by Mark Warner. Some are privately owned, as is the one the McCanns rented.

Could these two blonde gentlemen on the balcony, have been the owners, checking out their property? Prospective buyers?

The sisters say, from the balcony, the men could see the whole Ocean Club Resort, and, the apartment rented by Mr. Mrs McCann.

Well, yes, if they could see the whole club from this point, it would indeed, include the McCann apartment!

One of the sisters, Mrs Wiltshire said, that it was odd, as she had not seen these men before.
People arrive daily at these resorts.

Did they feel this way, each and every time they saw a new face?

When Mr. Mrs McCann arrived, if say, perhaps Mr. McCann had gone onto the balcony and looked out.

Would they have found this/him strange too?

If Madeleine was abducted, and these two men were the abductors. Would they really have exposed themselves in this way?

The sisters say the sighting of the men was hours before Madeleine was reported missing.
    What time was it then?

8:00 p.m. is hours before she was reported missing, as is 2:00 p.m.

If it was, at an hour when it was dark, could these men then have seen clearly the WHOLE of the Ocean Club?

Did the sisters see the men clearly?

If about to abduct a child, would they have stood so openly were all could see them?

If in darkness, are the sisters sure of what they saw - two blonde curly haired men?

Or was it in the afternoon, in daylight, when most likely, even more people would have seen them?

The men don’t appear to have been trying to go unnoticed!

Mrs. Wiltshire, said one of the men came down the stairs, and, as she looked at him, he turned and walked back up and spoke to the other.

Did she hear what he said? Was it in English?

Did he perhaps say - ‘this apartment is ideal, the wife and kids will love it here?’

Was she standing at the bottom of the stairs? across the street? looking over from her own balcony?

Did she not wait to see what they did next?

    Did they enter the apartment?

    Did they both/one walk off?

If perturbed, why not report it to the staff at resort?

    This report tells us nothing!

What was interesting, is that they say they were in the Tapas Bar at the same time as the McCann party.

The report states in reference to the sisters-

‘neither of them remember the doctors being rowdy or drinking heavily that night, as other witnesses have suggested.’

Were the sisters watching so closely as to the amounts of alcohol being consumed by each member of the McCann party?

Mrs. Jensen, one of the sisters (who just happens to be a bar manager) said

“They were not noisy or dominating the restaurant. They were just a party of friends enjoying a meal.”

In Panorama Mr. McCann stated, that when he and Mrs. McCann arrived at the restaurant, there was one other group people. They spoke to these people while they waited on their friends to arrive. As the McCann party arrived the other diners left.

Mr. McCann said that his party was the only one left in the restaurant?

How then would these sisters know if McCann party were rowdy or not/drinking heavily or not?

Mr. McCann said there was no one else there.

The witnessess who say that McCann party did drink quite a lot -
were they the staff at Tapas?

The bar staff, would, I imagine, know the answer to this.

The sisters, say that they finished their meal, and left to walk down into the village for a nightcap.

On their way to the bar, they heard the hue and cry about a missing child.

Word about Madleine wouldn’t have reached McCann party until after 10:00 pm.

Mrs. McCann had searched apartment 3 times, before heading back to tell Mr. McCann.

It would be a little later for it to filter to the ’sisters’ I would think.

If we are to believe the sisters, they would have been, still, in the Tapas up until the time/almost until the time, that Mrs McCann went to check on the children.

The reason being, they hadn’t even reached the bar in the village to which they were headed after leaving the tapas bar, only -

‘on their way to it,’ when they heard a child was missing.

If still ‘on their way’ they must only have left the tapas minutes beforehand!

From what they say, they were observant enough to notice, the amounts of alcohol being drunk by McCann party. They observed them to be ‘quiet’ not ‘rowdy.’

They noticed a lot about this party.

Would they have noticed also, if and when members of the party left the table to check on the children?

Were the sisters already in Tapas when Mr. Mrs McCann, or any members of their party arrived?

Did they arrive later in the evening, and it is the case that Mr. McCann, just didn’t notice any other diners?

Did the sisters spot the two blonde men, whilst on their way to the tapas bar?

The report by the sisters is very vague to say the least!

MURAT - One of the sisters said that she saw Mr. Murat, after Madeleine was reported missing, on a street corner close to McCann apartment.

Some of the McCann party have also stated this.

Mr. Murat has witnesses who state otherwise.

Whether he was/wasn’t none of us know.

Police in Portugal, did speak to these ladies on 3 occasions, they themselves stated this.

They made a report here in the U.K. on their return home from Portugal.

British Police, did not interview them until quite recently. Leicestershire Police apologised apparently for this lapse.

Now that it has been noted by the British Police, I take it that the sisters are satisfied?

Or was it the case, in their eyes, that as the Portuguese Police had not charged Mr. Murat in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine - that nothing was being done?

    I suspect so.

The Portuguese Police, British Police, Metodo 3 and of course Clarence have all now been informed.

Did it change anything re Mr. Murat?

They say he was odd, and that their holiday companion the barrister thought this also.

Being odd, is all a matter of how one perceives another. Opinions differ as to what makes someone/something ‘odd.’

Mr. Murat, may indeed appear odd to some. Sometimes, we cannot understand when someone is just genuinely a kind and helpful person. A sad reflection on today’s society.

Mr. Mrs McCann, appear to me to be more than odd as parents.

I truly don’t understand their reasoning, in believing it is ok to leave three babies alone?
Mr. McCann still maintains it was ok. He has received hundred of letters from people telling him they would do likewise (I doubt that)and he takes comfort from this, confirms for him that it was ok.

Now I find, in the circumstances, that, to be not just odd, but callous in the extreme.

Mr. McCann is so confident that it was an okay thing to do.

This for me, is not just odd, but so terrifyingly frightening, that both he and Mrs McCann are in charge of children, when they have this mindset.

I do sincerely hope that Social Services are working with them in this respect, because it needs to be changed and quickly.

All of that said, it doesn’t mean they killed Madeleine.

Others think Mr. Murat is odd - doesn’t mean he harmed Madeleine either!

Aren’t the reasons for each of these parties being thought odd, odd in themselves?

Mr. Murat for being too helpful and having a dodgy eye?

Mr. Mrs McCann, parents leaving three babies alone in an unlocked apartment in a foreign country, (and they are sill after losing a daughter, saying it was okay to do so?)

    Who is the odd one?

Jensen and Annie Wiltshire state that they were in the Tapas bar on the night that Madeleine disappeared. They were there long enough to comment that neither of them remembers the doctors being rowdy or drinking heavily that night. If that were true they would be key witnesses - especially in relation to whether they saw the doctors getting up to check children etc. So why have they never been mentioned by anyone before?

CHATELAINE: Maybe, as someone else suggested last night, because they were NOT there …?

I agree, but do these women realise that how serious their statement is? I wonder.

    CHATELAINE:
I have some doubts about them [and not only because of the looks of them. really … a woman in her 50’s in a gypsy skirt, not fitting the rest of her clothing on top of that …] because what I read about their statements is not all coherent. This may be misinterpretation by the newspapers, of course … Yet, to name one: in one article they befriended the McC’s during holiday, and in a next one they didn’t know Kate and only played tennis with Gerry, but did not socialize with him …

Not quite what you were asking for regarding the pink-shirted one, but this from the transfattyacid blog on 21 September 2007 may be of interest:

For Whom was Clarence Mitchell Working?
[Regular readers will recall this anomaly]

    QUOTE

On the 8th September, News 24, a South African website carried this report:

“Clarence Mitchell said father Gerry McCann told him that he and his wife expected clarification of their legal status within 48 hours. Their lawyer said late on Friday that police had declared the parents suspects in the May 3 disappearance.

“They are in broad agreement that they should get out as soon as they can,” Mitchell told The Associated Press by telephone from Britain. Whether Portuguese police will allow them to leave is unclear, though their passports are not believed to have been seized up until now.

Mitchell said Kate and Gerry McCann had previously intended to leave southern Portugal, where they have stayed since their daughter vanished from a hotel room during a family vacation, on Sunday night.

“They are determined to prove this is a travesty … and clear their names,” Mitchell said of the police allegations about their possible involvement.”

You will recall that at the time, Clarence Mitchell was the working as director of the Media Monitoring Unit and the spokesperson for the McCanns was Justine McGuinness.

This puzzled me, so I decided to do a piece of citizen journalism.

On the COI website I noticed that it was possible to request infromation under the Freedom of Information Act. And so I sent the following email:

“I am writing to ask what notice period a senior member of the COI would be expected to give before leaving their post.

Also are members of the COI allowed to work for clients outside of their role as COI employees? For instance working as a spokesperson for a third person.”

    Today I recieved a reply:

“According to COI’s HR policy, staff who decide to leave COI are expected to give anything from one week to three months notice. However, at the time of resignation COI may, by agreement with the employee concerned, accept a shorter period.

I presume your enquiry was prompted by Clarence Mitchell’s recent departure from COI to work for the McCann family. Clarence resigned from his post as Director of the Media Monitoring Unit on 17 Sept 2007, with immediate effect.

To clarify, earlier this year Clarence was seconded from COI to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to help provide media liaison support through the British Consulate in the initial stages of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine, he was not in a client relationship with the McCann family.

Questions relating to the reasons for his resignation and subsequent employment by the McCann family are for him to answer and I refer you to the McCann press office.”

This reply does not clarify why Mr Mitchell should have been giving interviews to the Associated Press Agency, when working as a government employee. Nor does it explain why other enquires made to the Foreign Office about Mr Mitchell’s work, should have been returned with a request to contact the COI. Since this makes clear that Mr Mitchell was on secondment to the Foriegn Office.
