Madeleine McCann In Chile, Maybe
MADELEINE McCann may be in Chile.
Police chief Segundo Leyton, head of the police unit specialised in the search of missing people, said the investigation was ordered after a man, who was not identified by name, reported seeing “a couple of foreigners” with a girl who looked like Madeleine in the city of Vicuna, 500 kilometres, (350 miles) north of Santiago.
Is this the first sighting in South America?
Leyton said, the unidentified man, a refrigeration technician, told police that the man he saw looked very much like a suspected kidnapper of Madeleine whose artist’s sketch was released recently by the girl’s parents.
Leyton told AP Television there is “similarity of 90-percent” between the man spotted in Vicuna and the artist’s sketch of the suspected kidnapper. “The physical signs of the child are coincident with the minor in question,” he said.

Just posted this on the old thread so I’ll post it here too.
Question for Mods & Admin
Would it be permissible for people who have information in a foreign language and wish to either quote or link it to simply give a brief summary of what it says, rather than translating the whole thing?
I am a professional translator and I can assure you that, for anyone who is not used to translating (however fluent they may be in the language), it is not easy. Neither is it easy to translate into a language that is not your own. I have lived in Spain for thirty years. I live practically my entire life in Spanish, which I speak and write fluently. However, even I find it a challenge to translate into Spanish (as opposed to writing an original text in it).
I say this because I feel that we are losing a lot of valuable information as a result of the ban on foreign language quotes/links.
Administrator: What could be the point of posting links to or précis quotes from another language? There are NO checks or balances in what you are proposing. If the article is worth repeating because you have read and understood it in its entirety then it is worth the translation. We are not competent to do so and will not tolerate large tracts of foreign language text. What is being said, to whom and about what? Are you giving instructions to defame a person or plant a bomb. How would we know??.
Another very important issue is; if you have read the whole and are impressed by it why should others not have the same opportunity to make their own value judgements from a full translation. If the original author can be persuaded to present a shortened and translated version the so be it. The situation remains large section of script other than English are not acceptable. -agw

Julie - don’t go - I just came back to tell you that its true - mr noseycow is indeed cleaning the bathroom - may even take some pictures of him cleaning the loo if it will cheer you up.
M&A did something similar to me the other day when we were discussing libel laws - they sounded very fierce - but i don’t think it should be taken personally - they are just protecting the site - which has to be a good thing doesn’t it ???
Please don’t be unhappy

Thank you for that! I really did not think I was doing any wrong, I was linking to a missing child’s site, and because she is Spanish, the site is in Spanish. There was a notice on the site which was dated today, and I was hoping that it said she was found. I did not understand what it said and was actually hoping that you were around at the time to tell me as I know you speak Spanish, (but I translated it via a translation site.)
I was under the impression that M&A would see that it was a missing child’s site and realise that there was nothing sinister about it (I’m the last person who would post a link to ANYTHING unsavoury). If the link was removed as they felt it was not appropriate I would have accepted that I’d broken a rule. However, it was quite clearly seen that it was MariLuz’s site, and nothing else.
I’m pretty hurt at the comment that was posted underneath the posting (I don’t know which M&A it was), I feel like some schoolkid that’s just received a blasting from a teacher for doing something wrong!

Chloe asks about posting in foreign script a little earlier in this thread. It is a genuine inquiry so I shall repeat the full answer here:

Obviously you set the rules. However, just for the record, I would like to point out that translation is a technique and consists of much more than being fluent in two languages. Many people speak two or more languages fluently and are unable to translate between them. Plus my previous comment on indirect translation (translating into a language that is not one’s mother tongue).
I will be happy to translate anything that is around the length of a normal newspaper article from Spanish to English should anyone wish me to do so.

Don’t disappear. I can understand exactly what you thought. I don’t think Carmen meant it personally, but it did come over rather strongly I thought.

Chloe Spain:
That’s the point. If you sometimes have difficulty in interpretation between languages then those who are forced to reply on cyber translations are totally lost and often mislead.
This is and always will remain an English language site. So, yes, the ruling stays as is. -agw

I’m curious. Is this a police story or a McCann story? If it originates from the chilean police then that is interesting because it messes with the McCann’ agenda. For example, if we get lots of potential siting reports from the police then doesn’t that take the initiative away from Mc’s and MS? Bet someone here could make sense of this - in a rush - I’ve got to go til later.

Is the sighting in South America an attempt to “crack” the US market from a different angle?
Having failed to cross the Atlantic (sp to speak), are we now looking at a subversive attempt at an working up to an illegal crossing from Mexico?………………………
January 26th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
ttthhhhhpt!
sp = so, as in “so to speak”
and “are we now looking at a surreptitious attempt to work their way up to an illegal border crossing from Mexico”

Slyfox,
From what I read in several Chilean online articles, the report of an alleged sighting has been confirmed by the chief detective of the Chilean Missing Persons Unit in an interview given to a mayor radio station in Chile.

You couldn’t make it up!!! Oh they have.
Chile, Pinochet, …………D’ya think K and G will actually get off their arses this time to go look for her? Mmmmmm. Quite hard to get someone back from there. Legally speaking.
That’ll be why they are going on the Oprah Winfrey show, then, I believe she is very popular in Chile!

Sadly, from Clarrie’s perspective, the article cited by Daisy refers to the little girl visiting a museum with two adults, one of whom bore a striking resemblance to Mrs Cooper’s sketch.
And since, on the whole, evil dirty unkempt creepy individuals with a penchant for kidnapping small girls tend not to take them half way aound the world to visit a museum dedicated to the life and work of a Nobel Prize winning lady poet, it seems unlikely that K&G are going to be able to convince anyone of their urgent need to follow this one up themselves…

LOL!
However, imo their lack of credibility hasn’t seemed to put a damper on any of their other bizarre activities and outpourings, so I can’t see this stopping them if that’s what they were planning on doing.

Well, they would need to persuade, for example, the Social Services that taking the twins with them to Chile was a good idea, and somehow at the moment I think there might be a few problems on that one.
Leaving them behind, and then applying for asylum in Chile might also be a bit tricky, not least because the Chilean government is unlikely to want to touch them with a bargepole.
The same goes for the United States…

Regarding earlier conversation ie translation of foreign languages from links……….
Translation of pages or paragraphs on the web try ……GOOGLE…..
just click on language tools next to the main search box on google,
Then you just copy and paste in the text, and select from whichever foreign language to English!
It is brilliant, it can be really funny as well type something in english then translate it to foreign then translate it back again sometimes it can be hillarious
:-)
