Madeleine McCann: Britney Spears, Lolita And Birthday Cards
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY MAIL: “Woolworths forced to withdraw LOLITA bedroom furniture range for girls”
The Lolita Midsleeper Combi, a wooden bed with pull-out desk and cupboard designed for girls aged around six, retails on the Woolworths website for £349.99
The name has “sexual connotations”. A “mother” sees it and writes: “Am I being particularly sensitive, or does anyone else out there think it’s bad taste for Woolies to have a kiddy bed range named ‘Lolita’?”
Well, you don’t have to buy it…
A spokesman for the company says: “What seems to have happened is the staff who run the website had never heard of Lolita, and to be honest no one else here had either. We had to look it up on Wikipedia. But we certainly know who she is now”
Trusting Wikipedia for information has its own dangers. (And look out for an article on the state of British education.) But no danger is bigger than a bed named, perhaps, in honour of a charcter in a novel by Vladimir Nabokov
Or Lolita Fatjo, pre-production coordinator for Star Trek
Or many other women called Lolita
“On-line parent power has been growing in recent years. In 2006 Tesco stopped selling a pole-dancing kit on its website over accusations it was destroying children’s innocence. And last summer an on-line campaign by Mumsnet resulted in a cinema advert about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann stopped from being screened before the children’s film Shrek the Third”
THE TIMES: “Staff at Woolworths baffled by fuss over the little girl’s bed called Lolita”
“Woolworths has withdrawn bedroom furniture for young girls bearing the sexually charged name Lolita after a campaign waged by a mothers’ online chat room”
An internal company e-mail seen by The Times goes: “As discussed, we’ve got the product below on our website. Can it be hidden as soon as is possible? Then I really need to find out how it came about being on our site and who bought it. Lolita is a word that means sexually active young teenagers, so a young girls’ range of bedroom products is in very poor taste. We’ve had an approach from a website who are clearly a little disturbed by this”
THE SUN: “Gift from Maddie for twins”
No, not furniture
“Twins Sean and Amelie McCann will get a special present from their missing sister Maddie today on their third birthday. Parents Kate and Gerry got the gift for the pair who, at three, are the same age as Maddie when she vanished last May”
Sad. But is it relevant to the case? Is it news?
Grandmother Eileen McCann tells us: “Of course Madeleine being there would be our dream but we’ll do our best to make sure the twins have a lovely day”
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Card from Madeleine at McCann twins party”
The twins are getting a gift in the Sun…
“Gerry and Kate McCann will throw a birthday party for their twins tomorrow - complete with a card from their missing four-year-old daughter, Madeleine”
DAILY STAR: “MISSING MADDIE’S SPECIAL PREZZIE”
“Little Sean and Amelie McCann will open a special present from their big sister as they celebrate their third birthday today”
With a card?
Says Eileen McCann: “There will be presents galore, lots of fun and games, lots of food and a big cake. Of course, Madeleine being home would make it complete and we continue to pray for that blessing”
SUR (Spain): “Marbella suffer their first loss of the year against Linares”
A football match: “Wearing T-shirts to raise awareness of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and Mari Luz Cortés, the children playing in the tournament accompanied the players onto the pitch as mascots at the beginning of the game”
RADAR: “Theater of Cruelty, Carnival of Souls”
“British rags hardly pretend to be providing straightforward news. What they are doing is what used to be the job of popular fiction; namely, processing myth out of characters sucked in from real life. Right now the cast list includes such durable regulars as Kate Moss—with or without Pete Doherty—Princes Harry and Wills, Posh and Becks, and Kate and Gerry McCann, whose daughter Madeleine’s kidnapping/disappearance in Portugal made them last year’s headliners”
ALISTAIR CAMPBELL (TIMES): Britney Spears: person or news commodity? She’s a great singer but obviously ill: we in the media have to decide to leave her alone”
Britney Spears and Madeleine McCann..?
“In some sections of the media, Madeleine McCann and her family are there. As I said in the Cudlipp Lecture on Tuesday, her disappearance was an interesting and important story, the stuff of every parent’s nightmare. But it quickly became a commodity in which most of the media got close to hysteria, and some have remained there. Let us not pretend the coverage was driven by concern for the child - there are many missing children - or compassion for the parents - certainly not once the mood shifted - or regard for the truth. It has been the worst example of recent times, on a par with Diana, of some newspapers thinking that the word “Madeleine” sells, and finding literally any old nonsense to keep her name in that selling position on the front”
THE GUARDIAN: “Mechanics of the McCann campaign - Professional media management may have generated coverage of Maddy’s disappearance, but it hasn’t helped with public sympathy for the family”
“Try as they might neither Clarence Mitchell nor Justine McGuinness could quite shake off the sense that the way they’ve managed this case might have contributed to some negative public sentiment towards the family. In place initially as what Mitchell described as “a buffer” between the shocked and distraught parents and the world’s media, hungry for news about Madeleine, it’s clear that what developed was a professional media management operation. With city PR firm Bell Pottinger on hand - primarily, we can assume, to defend the interests of their clients Mark Warner Holidays - as well as Justine and, latterly, Clarence with all their experience of Westminster spin, the McCanns could not have wanted for more professional advice. But as time went on media management itself - and once you’ve started feeding stories to the press to get control of the agenda, you really can’t stop - began generating negative reaction from other parties”

If when this is over as it will be one day Do you think the McCanns will be forced to live abroad. Ifeel they will, maybe the States or Australia. Unless of course they are eventually brought to book for Madelene’s disappearence.

I think the result is always 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63 etc.
These numbers always have the same sign in the end. But with every new “game” there is one different sign for all these “9 times X” numbers.

The Telegraph has reported that families have been put off using hotel childcare provisions by the Madeleine McCann case. What a strange survey! And a strange response by the public! I thought the whole point about the hotel childcare was that the “abduction” occurred because they DIDN’T use the hotel services, not because they used them. Anyway, I put a comment on the Telegraph site but it hasn’t been added and still says “No comments on this article”.

Stevo - Reading posts from last night, I find it facinating what you have come up with re photos. I guess that because you had to register with the site you found them on, you can post the links here due to privacy? How do we know that the PJ are looking as deeply into this as you are? It concerns me that things will get missed and there is nothing we can do.
Sometimes I feel the senarios on this site get a little far fetched, but increasingly I am believing that there is so much more to this than meets the eye, especially with the drug trial connections etc. Keep it up Stevo, your posts are the most worthwhile here and clearly you have made so much effort and taken time to show us all what you have found out. Thanks

Stevo/Slyfox,
The scheduled event below shows that Lord Tim Bell was at AstraZeneca’s London location for around 3 to 4 hourss on May 16th.He himself was the chair of this PR discussion, as well as a similar one that took place there on February 8th. So quite clearly Bell Pottinger has a close relation with AstraZeneca, no?
criticaleye.net/events/discussiongroups has this event listed:
CEO Support in Internal and Public Affairs
Date: Wednesday 16th May 2007
Time: 14.00 - 17.30
Host: Vice President Group Corporate Communications, Astra Zeneca
Chair: Chairman, Bell Pottinger Group
Location: Astra Zeneca, 15 Stanhope Gate, London, W1K 1LN
Introduction:
The discussion will investigate the following topics:
The role of corporate communications in supporting the CEO
How companies manage the communication demands/needs of their CEOs?
Enabling visible leadership
Enabling better line management communications
How can the views of the employees, at all levels, be understood?
—————————————–
communication-director.com has this:
Caroline Hempstead has joined the AstraZeneca Group in January 2007 as Vice President for Group Corporate Communications. In her position she is directly reporting to Lynn Tetrault, who is the Vice President for Global Corporate Affairs. Before she came to AstraZeneca, Ms Hempstead was the VP of Downstream External Affairs at Royal Dutch Shell Plc. She also held communication roles at Inchcape Plc, The London Stock Exchange and other industries.
another site had this:
The Chairman of Bell Pottinger is Lord Tim Bell, a friend of Thatcher’s who ran the Tory Party’s publicity campaigns for the 1979, 1983 and 1987 elections. He was the Deputy Chairman of Lowe Howard-Spink and Bell alongside Frank Lowe …

One of the T7 was said to have been under a lawsuit for medical negligence. Was Alex Woolfall taking part in that case prior to the holiday? What about after?

Stevo Says:
Why then the confusion over when he arrived in PDL? And why an independent company unconnected with anything? There really seems to be no good reason for Bell Pottinger to have got involved in this.

I’d been interested in Woolfall before, but I thought that the firm Bell Pottinger had Mark Warner as a client. Are you saying that this is not true (that such reports in the news were false), and that Bell Pottinger is unconnected with the resort?

“What it doesn’t explain is why the McCanns were talking about an abduction and Woolfall wasn’t.”
Could it be that Woolfall wrote in this manner some considerable time later as an attempt at damage limitation after reading so much of our critiquing of the strangeness of the ‘abduction only’ claims being loudly proclaimed right from the beginning ? Rather in the way Kate jumped in to try to deny she had initially cried “they’ve taken her”…….If you look at everything he has written…. it looks like a systematic attempt to deal with difficult or possibly incriminating aspects of the case………

Grande Finale
I never will get over my disgust at the gall of these two parents. If they are innocent of any knowledge of what happened to Madeleine, then they certainly have gone about their business of finding her and resolving their legal and financial problems all the wrong way, IMO. If they were people that could be trusted and were ruled out from suspicion in their daughter’s disappearance, then these actions of talking about efforts to strengthen systems to help find missing and abducted children would be seen as honorable. But only after they first took the step of admitting that their negligent behavior was the primary cause of whatever happened to their little girl. Without that, there is no respect for anything they have to say, from my perspective.
***
You want to find your little girl, Mr. and Mrs. McCann? Go help the PJ. Answer all the questions honestly.
And if you do have knowledge of what actually happened to Madeleine, step up to the plate and start behaving like a decent human being and parent and confess the truth.

I love how hard the McCanns are working to make the world a safer place for children (read the home page intro.) and yet cannot bring themselves to write the words “Please do not leave your young children alone and unprotected.” The very single most important measure for keeping a child safe is adult supervision and protection, the one thing the McCanns neglected to give their own children and the one issue they will not be honest and upfront about in a helpful manner to other parents and their children.

Grand Finale
I turned off to go to my bed and then on again to see if you replied!
Well, yes, but psychologically, what’s your legacy?
You might want to ‘keep the peace’ as a young child, or ‘take the money’ as an older one, but in your heart, your soul, your deepest thoughts, your dreams, what then, what there?
And aside from any indoctrination, any stories of ‘monsters’, I have no doubt that these siblings will have some memories. They might be vague but they will be unsettling enough, perhaps mixed with doubts from awakened perceptions, to remain with them into adulthood and thru’out their lives.
