Madeleine McCann: Alipio Ribeiro’s Police Acted In Haste
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
Alipio Ribeiro, head of the Policia Judiciaria, is in interview with Portugal’s Radio Renascenca.
He says said there was a “certain hastiness” in making the McCanns suspects.
Says the McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell: “Now the national director of the Policia Judiciaria apparently accepts they should not have been made arguido, it follows that there is no case for Kate and Gerry to answer”
Is that what he said? Or did Mr Ribeiro say they police might have acted with a “certain hastiness”? Is something being lost in translation?
Says Mr Mitchell: “”As I have consistently said, Kate and Gerry are entirely innocent of any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine.”
He goes on:
“If the Portuguese police, under Mr Ribeiro, now do the only proper thing by eliminating Kate and Gerry from their inquiry, they and our own investigators can work together rapidly and effectively to find Madeleine and to bring those responsible for her abduction to justice.”
And the arguido status is intended as a kind of protection, giving those involved in investigations more rights than witnesses.
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Police ‘haste’ in making McCanns suspects”
Says Alipio Ribeiro, “perhaps should have been another assessment” before Kate and Gerry McCann were declared “arguidos”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “What has been lacking so far is formal liaison with the police. If Kate and Gerry are no longer arguidos perhaps there will be better co-ordination, and the police and our investigators can act rapidly to find Madeleine”
But they are arguidos

Speaking from Lisbon, the BBC’s Alison Roberts said: “It is not clear whether Mr Ribeiro means tactically it was wrong to make them arguidos at that point or that they should not have been made arguidos at all.”
She stressed the full text of the interview has not been published yet, adding: “These comments are likely to stir up controversy, but would not carry legal weight.
“Mr Ribeiro makes the point that he does not give orders to officers to declare arguido status and it would not be normal for him to step in and order them to remove it.”
And she emphasised that arguido status was intended as a means of protection, giving those involved in investigations more rights than witnesses - for example over access to lawyers.

I think something is geeting lost in translation. Also, I think the PJ know they are eventually going to charge the McCanns and they (the PJ) don’t give a damn about PR, so they don’t bother challenging much of Clarence Mitchell’s nonsense. The length of time this is taking is driving me nits, but I continue to believe the McCanns will be charged before the one year anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance.

Mr. Ribeiro told that ,because the obstacles that the Brits Govm, is creating to the P.J.
February 2nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
For all we know, he may have meant that it was hasty in the sense that measures were not in place to prevent them from fleeing the country (resulting in all this mess with the rogatory letters).

He never told that !!

Well whatever was said, one thing I’m sure we can all agree on:
Clarence should just STFU. He does more harm that good to the McCanns.

CM seems to have no shame. I agree, maybe it’s that making them arguidos early on gave them to much notice so they could employ the best lawyers in town and allowed them to use all those diversionary tactics that have so woiund up the PJ. - I hope that’s what he meant!

Aaactuuaally!
Conspiracy hat on…
Could this be a trap? McCann’s said they would go back to Portugal if their arguidos status was dropped….if it was dropped, they would have no excuse for going back.
If they went back to be questioned, they would have NO arguidos protection. They would have to answer all the questions. Think about it. Hmm.

When I was at the meeting at LSE ,I saw a carefully preplanned event.
The panel and the invited speakers all held and kept to one agenda.
The chairman was so obvious when instead of asking a question and pushing for an answer he lead and guided a response.
The first 30 minutes were a time waste.
The following probably would have continued alone the same pattern if I hadn’t have spoke up.
This seemed to unsettle the momentum and I was referred to several times when someone spoke.
This too was laughable the way they tried to turn my short and polite interruption to their own gain.
Several used it by saying in a smug manner they would try to be brief ,while looking directly at me.
McGuinness tried to undermine me using the same tactic, I waited until the end and made a statement knowing full well what she would do.
And she did it.
After I spoke to a friend and they said I made her look a fool, I didn’t, she done that all by herself.
Clarence is an expert speaker and held himself well but he was well protected and on several occasions just before answering he was preempted and helped.
An American lady was given a chance to speak which was also in my view preplanned.
The whole event would have been a farce had it not been for a few people.
A member of the 3 arguidos, Astromum was truly excellent and also the lady beside her.
Their questions alone rocked the panel and at one point the whole audience laughed.
Their points were well thought out and delivered even sounded more professional and honest they made the panel look like amateurs, thus the laughter.
I presume from the preplanners point of view that this was to be expected and a strategy would have been in place to counter it.
That strategy also failed and made me believe why the meeting was quickly ended.
Outside I spoke briefly to Astromum, she was more than polite.
She had for me an obvious honesty, she showed no arrogance, she was in a different league.
McGuinness who now works for Nick Clegg, leader of the Lib Dems, spouted she even undercharged the McCanns for her time.
Clegg wasted his money, he should have hired Astromum.
In summary,
An attempt was made to try to pass the blame for the change of public opinion right at the media.
This coming from the people who have used the media to do the opposite.
A failed attempt of blaming a failure.
