This the same Carlos Anjos who once noted:
“There is no criminal investigation which can feed a news frenzy for six months, so what we have seen are both English and Portuguese journalists behaving in a scandalous and unprofessional way. Writing terrible stories in the papers, some of which have clearly affected the McCanns… now we have to say that the McCanns are partly to blame for this. Because it was something they created”
And then one of the oddest lines yet seen in a newspaper:
“Meanwhile cops have ruled out a theory the four-year-old could have been snatched by Swiss pervert Urs Hans Von Aesch. He blew his chance in august after killing a girl of five”
Anyone care to explain that comment?

The Cult of Vengeance
Pitchforks and Witch-hunting- The Internet and the McCanns.
The McCann story has fallen off the news agenda for the press and broadcast media alike. With only the rare mention of a development in the case, most people are forgetting about the ‘Story of the Decade’ last year. Most right thinking people believed the McCanns were foolish and desperately unlucky to have lost a daughter in the way that they have; many would like to see a prosecution for child neglect to send a message to other parents tempted to do the same. But to see the potential harm in the McCann’s way, one needs to look at the cult of vengeance brewing on the internet.
I was directed to several sites on the internet which are discussing the case. One site was closed down for further discussion of the case because of the libellous and scurrilous nature of the posts- however, this is retrievable from our friend Google and from a helpful cache from my informant. This lady told me that she had been following the story on various sites connected to the media (Sky, Mirror, Daily Express) or on independent discussion forums since last May. She describes a polarisation of views into three main camps- People who blindly support the McCanns, people who are withholding judgement until more real news is available, and people who are convinced of the McCann’s guilt. Some forums are very Pro-McCann, and these tend to be saccharine sweet and slightly religious in nature; they do no harm. There are no sites that I could find that discuss the problem of the McCanns even-handedl; so the group one might call ‘fence-sitters’ inhabit other sites on the Pro and Anti-Mcann sites. It is the Anti-Mcann forums and their denizens that are my concern here.
LIBEL AND DEFAMATION
These sites include considerable ‘information’ that if printed or broadcast would not only attract libel suits, but would also be severely censured by the Press Council and Broadcast regulators. The worst of these sites are those that have developed into self-serving confirmatory support groups for people who hate the McCanns; these sites have banished anyone with contrary opinions by the use of bullying tactics, shouting down of dissent or by simple banning by forum administrators. I cannot give a direct link to the worst site as our legal advice is that a simple link to it might be seen as assisting libellous statements, but Google the3arguidos and look for links from there.
PITCHFORKS AND WITCH-HUNTS
This site (and posts from its members on previous sites) make incredible claims about the Mccann’s actions, beliefs, practices, careers, sex lives, veracity and general character that would offend the person in the street. Such defamation would never be allowed in the general media. The level of discussion is juvenile and the main emotional feel is that of people engaging in a dirty act seeking to find peer support for their nasty little secret. One feels that there is some pseudo-sexual satisfaction gained by these people in their web of negative and defamatory statements about the McCanns.
SEXISM AND THE IMPOTENT
It is noticeable that many complaints on the board are about their own impotence in bringing about change in this case (although somewhat balanced by those making extravagant claims that their character assassination is being watched closely by the Portuguese Police and that somehow their little hidden website is a major plank in the investigation). Both the feeling of impotence and the over-blown self importance point to a deep inadequacy in the site members.
This is most noticeable in discussions of sexual matters. People have regularly posted on the board, speculating on the size of Kate McCann’s breasts, what sex acts the McCanns engaged in and when (whether they had sex after their daughter disappeared-how dare they!), whether Gerry McCann is impotent, whether the McCanns and their friends were part of a satanic sexual abuse ring with Madeleine as the victim, whether the group on holiday together were in fact engaging in an organised ‘swingers’ week for medical professionals, whether Madeleine was in fact the daughter of other parents- mother and father- within the holiday group. I could go on, but you probably get the feeling of amazement and of sexual inadequacy that I felt on reading these theories in depth.
THE SHERLOCK SYNDROME
Other posters express their impotence by trying to out detect the detectives- drawing up time-lines from press reports, compiling ‘evidence’ from published sources, posting ‘leaks’ from ‘well placed sources, imputing motives, discussing opportunities and generally claiming to have solved the case before the Portuguese Authorities have done so. The site has attracted ‘experts’ in police procedure, ‘forensic psychology’, legal matters (British and Portuguese), DNA technology, cadaver dog experts, criminal profilers and every kind of specialist one can imagine. Several people claim to be police officers or to be working closely with the ‘authorities’ on the case.
Many threads are full of deep analysis of the flimsiest of evidence using the most flawed reasoning imaginable.
THE UNBELIEVERS
Much effort goes into demonising and otherwise trying to disparage any person who does not believe in the received truth- that the McCanns killed Madeleine. Anyone suggesting an alternative view to that proposed by the board is undermined, accused of supporting child abuse or child abusrs, accused of being paedophiles, accused of being paid by the McCanns, or cast into any number of negative and distasteful roles. This is applied both to those close to the McCann (referred to disparagingly as TeamMcCann or the Mcpologists) or simply to a poster who writes a post that is off line. The website classes all people who post on the site who disagree with the consensus as ‘Chimps’ and delight in placing pictures garbed from the internet of chimpanzees in their posts.
INTERPRETATION OF NEWS AND NEWS SOURCES
Different news sources bring in both negative and positive information- negative and positive that is for the cultists. If a media source reports evidence that is to their liking, the story and the news source are gold plated; if the story is less than helpful, it is just McCann spin.
The next week the gold plated source may report unhelpful news- then it is denigrated as just a lackey of the McCanns. The posters seem blind to this!
VIGILANTES AND VENGEANCE
If the case cannot be solved by the Portuguese Police, then these message board members have the solution- demonstrations outside the McCanns’ house, trying to have their Medical Registration removed by writing to the General Medical Council, trying to use the Press Council to force newspapers to distribute their favourite propaganda, discussing how the McCanns can be made to suffer even if they emigrate.
Several threads suggest detailed ways in which extra-legal action could be taken against the McCanns if the outcome of the investigation is not to thir liking.
CONSPIRACY AND CLASS
One of the most compelling and obviously erroneous lines of reasoning is a dedication to the normal conspiracy theories that are all over the web.
This starts out with a half believable statement that the McCann’s protection comes from their middle-class status and support from the medical profession. This quickly degenerates into conspiracy theories- Gerry McCann serves as a Government advisor on Nuclear Fuel, hence it is a nuclear conspiracy, or that he is somehow linked to New Labour (is his secret father a Labour MP of old?) and is holding a great secret over the head of Gordon Brown, forcing Government support, or that because Gerry McCann is a Mason (is he?) then Branson and all the other supporters are engaging in a Masonic cover-up, aiding their brother.
Apparently, according to many threads, the Government is totally controlling the British and Overseas media and stopping the discussion of any negative material about the McCanns. If only the Government had had such control of the press last October, there would have been no ‘wobble’ and Labour would still be high in the polls now.
It is not long before the Illuminati, the Bilderberg Group and even David Icke and his Saurians raise their ugly heads- all apparently responsible for the dreadful miscarriage of justice that is this case.
TOTAL CRAZINESS
Many threads are started by people claiming astrological powers or spirituall beliefs making predictions about the case that rest on information from the Astral Plane. Starngely, in the environment of the board- paranoid, vindictive and irrational- these gentle new age folk seem quite pleasant.
THE FEEDBACK LOOP OF BELIEF
All of this takes place in a rarefied atmosphere where dissent has been suppressed and only a single theme is allowed- that of the total guilt of the McCanns. Even those who are critical of the child-care arrangements, but say that apart from that there is no evidence, are pilloried and derided. Unless one is a true believer (or seen as a harmless buffoon) dissenters will be cast out.
This ensures that there is no real questioning of evidence or methods of reason and the site continues to descend into an abyss of its own making- by outlawing dissent they are ensuring its moral and intellectual decline.
The owner of the site has started excluding people for not ‘being with the programme’. At the same time the site promotes itself as the Free-speech antidote to the gagged mainstream media!
THE ULTIMATE DISRESPECT
The forum discusses in depth the minutiae of the disposal of the body of Madeline McCann- sexually abused, beaten, thrown from a balcony, tossed in a volcano, sunk in a lake, abandoned at sea, sold by the McCanns as a sex slave, bundled into a tennis bag and carried around by the McCanns for three weeks, buried in Spain, shipped to England and buried at a Masonic Hotel near to the McCann’s house.
This is where the discussion becomes the most prurient- evil conspirators egging each other on with more outlandish theories about how a body (Madeline’s body) might be abused and disposed of. Their lack of awareness about this lapse of taste is abysmal.
There were related threads about Madeleine, accusing her of having behavioural disorders, Down Syndrome, Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, Brittle Bone Disorder, Cancer, side-effects of being a clone, AIDS, and a variety of other medical and social conditions.
And even worse is the case of the second Madeleine McCann- a baby girl was born to a Mr McCann who married a woman called Healy (also Kate McCann’s maiden name) about six months before Madeleine (Our Madeleine) was born; her name was also Madeleine- a coincidence. People have used genealogical websites to pinpoint the whereabouts of this poor innocent and try to establish if she and her parents are in some way connected to the story, setting amateur sleuths to track down this family to establish whether this is some sort of ‘cloning project’. No one is safe.
THE CULT OF THE PITCHFORK AND THE WITCHES
In olden days these people would have been gathering the farm implements and searching down the witches to burn. Modern laws about libel and harassment stop this outflow for their murderous animus and so their effluvium is found on a nasty little backwater of the internet. Look at it and wonder about the moral degeneration of our society.
How many people have team Mc slammed. Every Portuguese women, All Portuguese Police, God knows how many pig farmers etc etc.
As someone always says Pot-Kettle-Black.
Anyway I laugh like a witch so I am fully willing to own up to this.

i am a bully of unimaginable proportions (and i’m not comparing my breast size to dr k’s),
my ability to think logically has been wiped out due to the rarified atmosphere here on anorak

my children are psycologically damaged by my over protectionism
my opinions are both juvenile and vindictive…
