Madeleine McCann: Alberto Costa ‘Grilled’ And Clarence Mitchell’s Words

mccanns_ Madeleine McCann: Alberto Costa Grilled And Clarence Mitchells WordsMADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

THE SUN: “Minister grilled on Maddie”

Alberto Costa, is the Portuguese justice minister. And today he will “face a stormy parliamentary quiz on the handling of the Maddie McCann probe”

Says Mr Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman: “We are sitting tight to hear what Mr Costa says”

That is the full Madeleine McCann news in the papers.

Did Mr Mitchell’s words at a debate on The McCanns and the Media at the London School of Economics have an affect?

Since then, not one Daily Express front-page headline has appeared (although the Sunday Express continues to feature Madeleine on its cover), and a relative dearth of news…

Who sets the news agenda?

  1. 1 noseycow Says:

morning anorak - thought you would be struggling to find some news on this case today! :)

can we have a pink site tomorrow please?

  2. 2 noseycow Says:

Dr K McC ’sitting tight’ - where have i heard that before??

oh yes the night of may 3rd 2007!! (allegedly of course)

  3. 3 mk Says:

    morning nosey.

  4. 4 noseycow Says:

morning mk how are you this fine morning?

  5. 5 mk Says:

great thanks, just had my first coffee and the sun’s coming out.

  6. 6 Stan Says:

    A poor 5th?

  7. 7 noseycow Says:

    morning stan

  8. 8 Stan Says:

“Who sets the news agenda?” says wise Mr Anorak.

    Who indeed?

Every day I wake up in the hope that the headlines will include news that persons have been charged in connection with Maddie’s disappearance. Every day I am disappointed.

Am I naive and foolish in my hopes?

  9. 9 noseycow Says:

No stan - just an eternal optimist :)

does anyone know what time this great parliamentry debate is taking place?

  10. 10 Stan Says:

    Good morning to you all…

A very poor 6th :-( Never mind, there’s always tomorrow!!

I’ve had one coffee, and am just about to start on number two of the day.

So I’m an optimist. I suppose that’s OK. At least it shows that I haven’t given up all hope of seeing justice served in this case.

I’ve no idea when this debate in PT starts. I’m guessing during the afternoon…I can’t see politicians starting their day early.

  11. 11 mk Says:

Stan, I’m sure that when someone does get charged, it will be all over the front pages.

Until the old bill make a move or a body is discovered, there’s really not much to report.

  12. 12 noseycow Says:

Stan - i am back on shift tonight - so will leave the race for poll position to you and mk for the rest of the week!! ;)

  13. 13 mk Says:

doesn’t stop us making wild allegations though, eh?

  14. 14 Steve T Says:

    14th - Morning all.

  15. 15 just_me Says:

    Good Morning All :)
Flippin freezing here and so foggy I cant see beyond the trees at the end of the garden. Off for a coffee to warm up :)

    just_me

There is a lot of fog surrounding the McCanns. IMO

  17. 17 hannasus Says:

    Morning all,
    Peaking and hopping off.

Isnt it funny that there is a picture of Clarence looking directly at the camera rather than either of the McCanns.

  19. 19 Ian Says:

They are expecting an announcement of arguido status being lifted.

But is it likely to be announced in Parliament? I’d think not.

So is this going to be clarification on the ‘hasty’ statement?

Its very interesting that Clarence has admitted this is important to them.

  20. 20 LaMisty Says:

Ian, he’s sitting tight with his phones at the ready to call Oprah and IMG to get the deals done.

  21. 21 BabyJane Says:

    Good morning all,

hope Senor Costa doesn’t say arguidos cleared, case closed.

May I ask an off topic question I haven’t got out of my head for ages? In “Lassie”, which of the dog masters was it who said the famous sentence at the end of many episodes? I think it must be something like that in English:

“Lassie, we can shelve this case”.
(”Lassie, diesen Fall können wir zu den Akten legen”).

    Does anybody remember?

  22. 22 Swannie Says:

    23 BabyJane

I always thought it was Lassie who said that - it could do everything else!!!

  23. 23 Ian Says:

Well, we should know the stance of the Portuguese Government this afternoon then - or will we just have more statements which will be ’spun’ in the direction appropriate to the particular spinners cause?

The two positions were, as I read it:-

    1. The McCanns were made ’suspects’ ‘in haste’ in order to beat the legislative changes the PJ knew were coming.

    2. The McCanns were made ’suspects’ ‘in haste’ because the PJ feared they were about to leave Portugal as they (the McCanns) knew they were being investigated.

This ‘haste’ is an issue because:-

Option 1. There is insufficient evidence to justify the status (not sure what the requirements in terms of evidence are)

Option 2. The status has caused the McCanns to be obstructive to the investigation and communications between PJ and the McCanns (and indeed the T7) has ended.

Option 3. The involvement of lawyers has effectively halted the investigation.

Or a combination of the above!

Will the Parliamentary ‘debate’ or ‘announcement’ clarify the situation? In my opinion, only if dramatic and/or explicit statements are made!

Ultimately, of course, it is arguably an irrelevance to Madeleine and to obtaining justice for her suffering from the failure in a duty of care.

It may be an excellent example of the inadequacy of the European Union and across border co-operation to prevent harm coming to children.

  24. 24 BabyJane Says:

Woof, woof. Swannie, could very well be. ;-)

RR, Jeffurry the Bear surely had a good life.

  25. 25 Ian Says:

    21 RedRooster.

Clarence has to apepar to be the most morally bankrupt - simply from the fact that he is arguing purely to fund his life. Its his job.

Does he believe in it? Maybe he does, in which case perhaps he can justify his position. Personally I think he should refuse his pay from Kennedy and donate it to the fund. He could make a living from his other interests or from his attendance at lectures etc.

In black and white (with tinges of pink) he is earning his living from the loss of a child, but of course thats jsut what the press and the lawyers are doing, so isnt this just ‘the way of the world’?

The McCanns themselves are responsible for failure in a duty of care to their child, they really seem to be inept as parents, a common issue in todays world of late and arguably unnatural parenthood.

I’m afraid we really havent managed to overcome our inherent natural instincts and behaviour -even the most ‘civilised’ of us in basically an animal (and always will be).

  26. 26 gillyflower Says:

    Morning all!
Lovely to see you on this sunny day!

So, today we discover whether they should have been made arguidos.
Or have I read the above wrongly?

Lovely new font - don’t need my reading glasses at home.

Last but one day in job, today. Then off to join the ranks of the unemployed.

Perhaps the McConns would like to send me to Portugal. I could look for Madeleine with Jo.

    SC46 where are you??????

    I miss you

    and its Valentines Day tomorrow.

    : heart :

  27. 27 Ian Says:

    28 Ian

    Corrected ‘in’ to ‘is’!

‘even the most ‘civilised’ of us ‘is’ basically an animal (and always will be).

  28. 28 aardvarko Says:

Today’s parliamentary goings-on in Portgal may be interesting.

In UK, many things can be said in parliament which could not be said elsewhere (Parliamentary privelege). This means MPs can not be sued for slander for anything they say in the House.

If Portugal has a similar convention, we may hear something quite interesting today, assuming the matter is actually discussed.

  29. 29 Ian Says:

Probably it will just be ‘annoying grist for the spin wheel’!

  30. 30 can't say no Says:

Alberto Costa, is the Portuguese justice minister. And today he will “face a stormy parliamentary quiz on the handling of the Maddie McCann probe”

    _______________________________

    A. Costa will go to the parliement ,just to say ,he supports Alipio Ribeiro (about the word “precipitation”,that was said by “mistake!) ,and that’s all we will know about this case !
Mr. Costa ,doesn’t know ,the evidences the P.J. ,has ,and if he does ,that’s abuse of power.
If one of you ,inderstand what i’m saying, it’s enough forme ;)
