Madaleine McCann: Amaral Accused

cipriano-amaral Madaleine McCann: Amaral Accused MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

THE SUN: “McCanns slur cop to face trial”

Goncalo Amaral is to go in the dock.

No, not because he “smeared” Kate and Gerry McCann. Not for “claiming British cops were trying to shield the McCanns, both 39, of Rothley, Leics.”

Mr Amaral “faces six years for allegedly concealing that four colleagues beat Leonor Cipriano, 36, until she confessed to killing her daughter Joana, nine”

Kate and Gerry McCann deny being involved in their daughter’s disappearance

DAILY MAIL: “Portuguese detective who led the hunt for Madeleine faces trial over his conduct in another missing child case”

Amaral, 48, will stand trial along with four other officers - three of whom are alleged to have attacked Leonor Cipriano, whose nine-year-old daughter Joana vanished in 2004”

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell “refused to talk about Amaral’s impending trial”. He said: “It is a matter for him and the judicial authorities in Portugal”

DAILY TELEGRAPH: “Ex-chief of Maddy McCann case ‘in cover-up’”

Amaral “was in charge of the Madeleine case when her parents, Gerry and Kate, were named as suspects last September. His boss has since said officers had acted ‘hastily’ in making the McCanns arguidos (formal suspects)”

“Four inspectors will stand trial accused of torture. The officers claim that Mrs Cipriano tried to commit suicide by throwing herself off a staircase”

Kate and Gerry McCannare doctors.

It is not said how Leonor and Joao Cipriano, both convicted of killing Joana Cipriano, “8”, were employed

BREAKING NEWS in ‘The Daily Mirage’ 7:00 am

‘Madeleine sighted in Nania by Elvis!’
A source of a close friend’s brother has revealed how Elvis and his Buddy had ‘Suspicious Minds’ when they saw her in ‘The Ghetto’. Elvis is reported to have said, “It was definitely her, because she was young, blond and was blinking – and she was dancing (to one of my songs) with a swarthy man, who she referred to as ‘Monster’. It left me ‘All Shook Up’.”

    AFTERNOON EDITION:
‘“My mistake it was NOT Madeleine,” says Elvis.’
A source of a close friend’s brother now reveals that Elvis, after looking at a photograph of the missing girl for the first time, admits it was not her, but he denies it was a stunt to get his fifteen minutes of fame. The source says that Elvis would even like to go on record as saying, “Personally, I think people are wrong if they just dismiss the cadaver dogs as a ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Old Shep’. There’s times when we’d all like to be on our ‘Lonesome Tonight’, but you know, ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ and leave very young children alone like that, or you surely must have a ‘Wooden Heart’. Goodnight everybody and thank you for coming.”
(These words have been copywrited and will appear as song lyrics on a new album, featuring guest artist, PJ Probing.)

    EVENING EDITION:
    ‘McCann spokesman says, “It’s ludicrous.”
The spokesman has asked how on earth Elvis can be certain it wasn’t Madeleine, when he hasn’t even been forced to look at the CCTV pictures yet! He demands that Elvis phones him, ‘It’s Now Or Never’, to confirm it definitely was Madeleine.’

    LATE EVENING EDITION:
‘Elvis sighted in Barcelona in a Spin (sorry, typing error – that should read Barcelona in Spain) in a crate labelled ‘Return To Sender’. He refuses to comment further about his sighting in Nania or about ‘The Liar, The Witch or Their Wardrobe’, except to add that, while their outfits co-ordinate very nicely, he feels his are more fitting for a celebrity.

    Narnia!

  6. 6 Cheryl Says:

She certainly did a lousy job in trying to kill herself, I’d say. When throwing herself off the staircase doesn’t look like she even got bruises on her jaw line, her mouth is not bruised nor lips split open - somehow when she landed she must have landed only on her upper face - eyes and nose. Bridge of her nose looks like it might be broken being swollen and badly bruised like it is and her eyes are black and swollen shut. One can only imagine her screaming “I did it, I did it” as she bounced down the staircase on her upper face only attempting to kill herself. Why one might be inclined to think she had the hell beat out of her with fists pounding around her upper face!

Surely that upstanding looking pillar of the community in the picture next to her’s with misfitting wrinkled shirt opened up at the top, bulging stomach pulling the button on the shirt apart and jacket all askew, both apparel looking like they’d been slept in for days, squinty eyes, hand scratching his head with a puzzled look on his red face surely couldn’t somehow be involved in her attempt at her so-called suicide!

When the road forks take it.

  8. 8 Joy Says:

Poor Amaral, they did not allow him to harm Kate McCann’s face too. He was eager to do it. I think Amaral suffered trauma caused by his mother during his childhood. Perhaps, he suffered trauma when he saw his mother cut the chicken into small pieces for lunch and now he thinks that all women cut into small pieces their children, after to declare them abducted . Yes, it is a trauma.

Anorak: Now you can erase my comment and allow others to nominate me sewer-rat. Morning!!!!

  9. 9 Joy Says:

Nobody throws down the stairs on his face. You can harm a leg or an arm, but your face? She was thrown over her head? That was a bad story told in a Portuguese book (Written by PJ).

  10. 10 Evening All Says:

Me thinks Gandolf found radio 4!

  11. 11 lyn Says:

The poor woman looks like she has dark eye shadow on, then there is the bruising. I see that the authorities have not looked into her case to see if she did it or not though. What a place to go to. All travel agencies should have a warning printed on their brochures…Beware When Taking Your Children to…..Keep Them With You At All Times.
When going to walks families should all hang onto a long rope like when kindergarten children go for walks in UK.

…Surely that upstanding looking pillar of the community in the picture next to her’s with misfitting wrinkled shirt opened up at the top, ….

whereas the Mccanns are always perfectly turned out therefore above suspicion?

  17. 17 Gandolf Says:

Swannie, your reward will be at the hands of the lord, has this child not suffered enough, without cretins making light of that suffering, hang your heads in shame. That is not satire it is nothing short of voyeurism.

Gandolf I don’t think Swannie liked it much, she certainly didn’t compose it. But then isn’t there a certain amount of voyeurism around MM anyway.
And with respect, are you your Deity’s spokesman?

  18. 18 Gandolf Says:

Mods and Admin, every one knows Elvis is dead, have people no respect for the King, dont be cruel I’m all shook up.

  21. 21 Maria Says:

    Hi Cheryl,

    Nice to see you.

Can you imagine how KMc must have felt, knowing that Amaral, who was conducting her questioning, was himself an arguido in this alleged cover-up case?

We don’t yet know if he is guilty but can it have inspired confidence in his investigative skill and impartiality? (At least she probably won’t have feared a beating herself. Case much too high-profile.)

If it is true that Cipriano was beaten up, as opposed to falling conveniently on her upper face, one wonders why….? And why would Amaral have covered it up, if he did, and “failed to report a crime”?

I wonder if the McCann case has still a very long way to go………

  22. 22 liza Says:

Notwithstanding the fact that I am quite aware tha police are often violent… but one question comes to mind: do you really think police attempting to cover up a beating would take such a photo of the beaten up inmate or suspect? Plus (and this I’ve been told on very good authority) it’s very often the other inmates who beat up people who are serving time for children abuse/murder.

I’m no expert on traumas and bruising, so would not know if what is shown in the picture is consistent with punching, or falling or maybe banging the face (or bangin on’es face) against a hard surface.

A final, and cynical consideration: I suspect that police violence is of a kind that does not leave many apparent traces and/or signs

  23. 23 Maria Says:

    liza 16

As i think you’re implying, appearances should have nothing to do with it. The Portuguese police have clearly not let the McCanns’ respectable appearance deter them from making them arguidos and neither have they been deflected from now charging Amaral, whose appearance might be considered a little less conventional. Of course, one can be sure that the papers have always deliberately chosen this particular shot of Amaral which hardly shows him at his best!

Both cases remain open. No judgements to be made yet. Interesting though.

I was just reflecting on KMc’s thoughts on Amaral if indeed she is innocent of killing her child, accidentally or deliberately, covering up the death and disposing of her body locally or in Spain. (If I remember rightly, the police were reported…….reports can be wrong…… to have suggested that Kate did the killing and Gerry then helped her dispose of the body?)

I think in Kate’s shoes I would inevitably have had less than 100% confidence in Amaral. Human nature I suppose.

But maybe it didn’t bother Kate one bit.

Perhaps the fact that the Amaral case seems to be actually coming to court does create confidence in the police. The case doesn’t exactly show them in a good light but they’re not ducking it, in spite of the fact that Ribeiro has also just said they were hasty in making the Mccanns arguidos.

    #6 Cheryl
Are you talking about Leonor Cipriano or Princess Diana?

  25. 25 Pilimary Says:

Leonor Cipriano wears more eye shadow in one eye than in the other… she should fire her stylist

  26. 26 liza Says:

Maria - I was commenting on what the PJ have done, are doing or are planning to do with respect to the Maddie investigation - rather on other poster’s comments.

What surprises me is to witness a kind of Beauty and the Beast attitude (reference to amaral being no Brad Pitt and sweating a lot). I am not the tidiest person myself and do tend to perspire easily yet I am quite a nice person if I may say so myself

Kate and Gerry are undoubtedly a thousand times better groomed than I am but I (who do not hold a medical degree) knew quite better than to leave my kids (2 of them, too) alone. And leaving such young children alone was an enormous risk - and not of abduction, but of other and equally serious and severe events.

    ciao

  29. 29 Marie Nicholas Says:

    21 Maria

Supposing Amaral had been rough on Mrs Cipriano, -not he himself, some detective under his orders-, there is absolutely no danger that such a thing could have happened to K MC. She was already taken care of by the British embassy, the British government, the British press. No way she could have come out of a Police Station battered.

  30. 30 Marie Nicholas Says:

    26 Liza

I quite agree with you on what you call “the Beauty and the Beast attitude”. Sweating is normal, especially on a hot day, and doesn’t mean you are dirty, or evil.

also goodness knows what time of day or temps occured when that pix was taken, strange how much appearences count in this case, perhaps far too much
