Karen...

I've just read through the previous discussion in which you discussed some of your past. Stuff happens. Sometimes other people don't like it. I have done things when I was younger and foolisher (still considering myself fairly young and foolish!) that I would not do again. Also if any child of mine tried them I'd (erm) "kill" them. Translation - I'd be very concerned for their well-being.

You seem a very intelligent young lady who can judge for herself.

Missing: Madeleine McCann went missing in Portugal last May
The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have visited Richmond to find out more about the work of a charity that helps locate missing people.

Kate and Gerry McCann, whose four-year-old daughter was kidnapped from Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3 last year, met representatives from East Sheen-based charity Missing People and Missing Children Europe.

Ross Miller, of Missing People, said the McCanns wanted to find out more about the charity's role within Missing Children Europe, the European Federation for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children, and to hear about its work first hand.

He said: "Kate and Gerry were very interested to learn more about our new research programme.

"This aims to fill gaps in the information currently available about the numbers of people going missing, why they go missing, their experiences while away and the impact on those left behind."

On the same day, 302 days after Madeleine's abduction, Gerry wrote on his blog praising the work of the charity.

He said: "Missing People were responsible for displaying Madeleine's image on Marble Arch, along with two other missing children last summer.

"It was heartening to hear today that one of those children was recovered as a direct result and the other has also been successfully returned to his family."

The Richmond Guardian also received reports that the couple visited the Depot restaurant, in Tideway Yard, Mortlake High Street, and were being filmed.

However, staff at the restaurant remained tight-lipped about the couple's visit and refused to comment about the filming.

Most people did not forget the leaks the Let Them Eat Cake Ones were unable to stop or spin away.
Like the lying, the conflicting timelines, the blood the spinal fluids, the corpse fluids, the scent of death, the list goes on and on.
Only 30 percent of the public think they are innocent, probably lost interest in the case after the up yours senor article.

Hi. Feeling OK?

You said
"If there is a shift in public perception, it could be because no further formal action has taken place yet against the McCanns, undermining confidence in the PJ’s case against them."

Spot on. I'm sure that explains the shift in Portuguese opinion, if there has been one. (These polls are not always the most accurate measures of opinion.)

I honestly have yet to meet anyone anywhere (other than on the net) who thinks the McCanns killed Madeleine, or even covered up her accidental death for some unknown reason.

I wonder why?

Maybe it was the suggestion that they'd moved the body 25 days later in a hire car and buried it somewhere on the way to Spain that made people think the stories of the parents' involvement were virtually incredible. (I know that's by no means the only scenario but I just think it made people even more sceptical than usual about the papers.) And the stories about the priest's possible involvement, confessions, burials in the churchyard etc. seemed impossibly lurid and far-fetched and were denied by him anyway. Then there were the suggestions of child-substitution......one of the other kids played Madeleine on the 3rd and nobody noticed.......Mmmm!!! No journos unearthed anything unsavoury in the McCanns' background either. (It won't have been for want of trying!) They seemed an ordinary, hardworking, well-liked, well-respected couple with loving, supportive families and lots of supportive friends and colleagues who believed totally in their innocence. The twins seem very happy, well-cared-for little souls, despite their parents' incomprehensible decision to leave them asleep out of ear shot while they ate by the pool.

Nearly everyone believes the police did make big errors in the early part of the investigation and that also influenced public opinion because a lot of people thought the police were looking for a scapegoat because of their own mistakes. (I never subscribed to that view but I've heard it countless times.) The charges against Amaral didn't help either and they could also have influenced opinion in Portugal as well as here. And Ribeiro has said the police were "hasty" in making the McCanns arguidos.

A lot of people (not on Anorak, I know!) thought, and still think, that Kate, in particular, is grief-stricken and looks it. There has also never been such a determined campaign to find out what happened to a missing child.

All reasons which could explain public opinion in favour of the McCanns.

Of course some crimes do seem impossible........ until you actually see how they were done!. I'm only saying that I think most people here, rightly or wrongly, rejected the idea of their actual guilt from the very beginning.

Of course, we still have the interviews to come. Let's not forget that. Surely they will be significant, maybe decisive. It's a big mistake to take the apparent silence of the Portuguese police as meaning that they have nothing more to say or do. It's their investigation. I'm sure they are pursuing it. Quietly. We'll hear the results in time.

I did find an article that relayed the information about the McC's paying for PR work to influence Portuguese public opinion. -- See my post 329.

Julie

I think we can safely say, that me and the FBI would not be compatible.

I went to confession once and left the door open, the priest said 'should you not close the door?', I said, 'nah, it's all right'.

I could turn that true story into a dirty joke, but I think I'm in trouble enough really. :)
