Madeleine McCann: McCanns’ Police Statements, Child Safety Appeal And Kate McCann Speaks
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS (front page): “MADELEINE: WHY DID YOU LEAVE US TO CRY MUMMY?”
That was the “plea” Madeleine McCann made on the morning of her vanishing. The words are taken from a police interview with Kate McCann. It was Kate McCann who gave the police the insight.
Says a “furious friend”: “The minute you talk about Madeleine crying is the minute that the vultures will pile in, that’s why this has been leaked.”
The Daily Express is no scavenger, picking and picking and picking over the bones of a missing child. It leads with the quote – splashed across its entire front page – to show how awful it is and how cruel some people can be to bring it up on the very day Kate and Gerry McCann are talking about child safety.
Said Kate McCann to the police in Portugal:
“While we were having breakfast, Maddie said, ‘Mummy, why didn’t you come when we were crying last night?’ She added: “Gerry and I spoke for a couple of minutes and agreed to keep a closer watch over the children.”
THE SUN (front page): “Mummy, why didn’t you come when we were crying last night?”
This is “WHAT MADDIE ASKED PARENTS HOURS BEFORE SHE VANISHED”.
As ever there is “fury”. This time the fury is over how and why details of the McCanns’ police interviews were revealed by Spanish television station Telecinco TV.
The channel’s crime reporter Nacho Abad told how Kate’s police statement recalled the chilling moment she realised Maddie was missing.
She was said to have run back to the Tapas Bar screaming: “Maddie isn’t there. Someone’s taken her.” Spanish TV said this contradicted statements made by the McCanns’ friends, in which several claimed that GP Kate instead shouted: “Madeleine’s gone, Madeleine’s gone!”
DAILY MAIL (front page): “Mummy, why didn’t you come when we were crying last night?”
Page 7: “McCanns left Maddy sobbing the night before she vanished.”
Or what about the alternative headline: McCanns didn’t hear Madeleine crying and when she told them they promised to listen more carefully.”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “The timing of this is frankly suspicious”.
The leak was made as the McCanns visited the European Parliament to appeal for a Europe-wide child alert system.
Mr Mitchell goes on: “We would like an internal inquiry about why this piece of information has emerged on the very day that Kate and Gerry are doing a high-profile visit to Brussels to call for improvements in child welfare and safety.”
Oh, the irony…
Those leaked police statements:
KATE McCANN:
“I saw the door of the children’s room wide open and noticed a current of air. The same current of air closed the door but the window in the other room that backed onto the patio was closed.
“When I went to look for Madeleine I realised she wasn’t there.
“I looked through the apartment and I went back to the children’s room and then saw the curtains moving towards me so it became clear the window shutters were wide open.
“I went to the window and opened the curtains to see if she had climbed out but there was no sign of her. I don’t know if I closed the window at that moment.
“I ran to the tapas bar and screamed at Gerry, ‘Maddie’s not there, someone has taken her.’”
GERRY McCANN
“I saw the angle of their door had changed and it was open around 45 degrees.
“I thought perhaps Madeleine had woken up and left the room. Out of the corner of my eye I looked in our room and couldn’t see her.“Then I opened the children’s door 60 degrees and looked to the left and saw Maddie sleeping with her head on the pillow on the right hand side of the bed.
“She was breathing softly and I thought how beautiful she looked. I thought it was quite hot and I didn’t need to cover her up…
“Kate came running to the bar and said, ‘Maddie’s not there, someone has taken her’. I couldn’t believe it and ran towards the apartment along the same route I always took. I looked everywhere. I returned to the children’s room and I tried to think what could have happened.
“To my surprise I realised I could lift up the window shutters without effort and almost without making noise. When I entered I realised that Maddie’s bed was almost intact. The corner of the outside of the sheets was turned a little.
But the pillow, her Cuddle Cat and the blanket she had slept with were almost in the same place as I had seen them the last time.”
DAILY MIRROR (front page): “KATE SPEAKS”
Kate McCann is in Brussels. She is sat before a battery of cameras and hacks. Says she:
“It’s been totally devastating. This time last year we were an incredibly happy family and felt very lucky. But we certainly have hope Madeleine’s alive.”
DAILY STAR (front page): “MADDIE IS STILL ALIVE.”
The Star is certain. Well, not really. It’s what Kate McCann hopes is true. Still, it’s a good headline and offers some progress in the investigation.

DuncanR, a quick question before work, I have been lurking for a few days watching things descend into playground farce at times, it appears that every time certain posters don’t like what another poster says, they play the troll or multi poster option. I have noticed that gando, who needs no help from anyone in defending him/herself is a major target, simply is gando a multi poster formerly known as sledgie, and do we have many others. If not isn’t it time to stop the accusers in their tracks, as all they do is turn discussion on its head.
Administrator: That could not be a double diversionary tactic could it? Is this syntheses of the Dave we know and love? Not the Dave who on April 4, 2008 said:
“I believe Gandolph has gone off somewhere, so it should be safe to pose this question. Has anyone noticed how Gandolph can turn from being quite pleasant to being or apppearing to be, to deadly serious, in one fell swoop. My grandfather is a known Seer and he said that Gandolph has the sight, he knows things that mere mortals do not, I must admit to feeling or sensing an underlying power in some of his sayings, that I am at a loss to understand, I only know I do, as does my grandfather.”
Not attempting to teach your Anorakian granddaddies how to suck eggs are you, Dave, Dave?? -agw

Vultures don’t ‘pile’, they ‘flock’.
Hence the expression, ‘Those flocking vultures !’

Best commemt I heard from CM:
I paraphrase - ‘If maddie was crying the night before then maybe an intuder was in the room that night.’
Well, CM, do you not thnk that if that waas so, maddie may have mentioned that very fact the day after??

Seriously did CMsay that: she cried because there was an intruder?
(It can be truth!!!!!)

“She was breathing softly and I thought how beautiful she looked. I thought it was quite hot and I didn’t need to cover her up…
But Tanner thought how COLD it was and that therefore it was normal for bundleman to be wearing thick clothes.
KM “I ran to the tapas bar and screamed at Gerry, ‘Maddie’s not there, someone has taken her.’”
GM “Kate came running to the bar and said, ‘Maddie’s not there, someone has taken her’.
Remarkable coincidence of recollection. Too close not to have been rehearsed. IMHO obviously.
GM “But the pillow, her Cuddle Cat and the blanket she had slept with were almost in the same place as I had seen them the last time.”
But cuddle cat was on a high shelf according to KM. Not rehearsed, this bit.
And again look at the grammar. It may be a slip, but it may also be the truth.
“But the pillow… and the blanket she HAD slept with…” Not “the blanket she slept with” The pluperfect indicates distant past. Something now finished forever. = The blanket she had slept with up to the night of 2nd May, but now sadly no longer would -
Revealing, or tabloid rubbish. I don’t know. But I am fairly sure the PJ do.

BTW What is all that din about Coldwaters? Is him/she a poster of 3A? I’ve missed anything interesting?

I now understand why the mccanns were happy leaving 3 year maddie in charge of her 2 year old siblings. Based upon the “leak”, clearly maddie is a lucid, plain speaking child with adult levels of arguments and understanding.
Does anyone know of any 3 year old who can really remember what happened the night before? Kids go to sleep, wake up, and its a brand new day.
Even this mccann explanation of what went down is fishy

DNA technique ‘fit for purpose’
The technique has been used in high-profile cases around the world
A controversial method for obtaining DNA profiles is “fit for purpose” in the criminal justice system, an independent review has concluded.
The government-commissioned study said low copy number DNA analysis, which forms a profile from just a few human cells, was “scientifically robust”.
But it recommended improvements in sample collection and interpretation.
Use of the method was briefly suspended last year after the Omagh bombing trial judge questioned its credibility.
The review followed increasing doubts over the reliability of the technique.
Study leader Professor Brian Caddy’s report concluded it was fundamentally sound but not being used as effectively as possible

The couple also insist Madeleine was not speaking angrily and they did not take it as a reproach. Her reference to “we” is understood to have referred to Madeleine and her younger brother Sean.
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “It is more than curious that this comment, taken in isolation and out of context, that has been in the police file for some 11 months, should now emerge on the very day that they are in Brussels trying to improve children’s welfare and child safety.”

nothing changes so much that it remains the same. there is no mobile evidence my department handles that area no cctv or dna. but there is another avenue.

It’s also good to see Moses’ judgement in the BAE judicial review; there are long and extremely satisfying dicta about political intervention in the judicial process which suggests that our Courts are not going to be as nice to the McCanns as Clarrie might wish…

Morning All
Patch if you are reading, I dont have your email addy, but thanks very much for what you did yesterday
So Kate ran to the tappas bar and didnt shout from the balcony then?
April 11th, 2008 at 7:47 am
If there was a complaint about Maddy screaming for an hour and a quarter, then why didn’t the parent go to the room then. Could it be that the “intruder” was the one who snuffed out Maddy’s life. Was Maddy really at breakfast on the 2nd. I believe the McCanns will know why Maddy was screaming! IMO.

Who on earth would go out and leave the kids knowing they were crying and wanting their parents the night before? I would be riddled with guilt if I knew my kids had been crying for me and I wasnt there.

Im still rather shocked that Kate even said this in her statement. I was expecting Clarrie the Clown to say the leek was ludicrous, and it was all lies, but all they were worried about was the fact it took attention away from the Brussels road show.

Thank God for that.
Fascinating that the tabloids are actually running this stuff after their forced contributions to the McCanns’ Fund; the libel lawyers must have gone over it with a fine toothed comb.
