Madeleine McCann: A Pilgrimage, An Official Book And Australian Girl Guides Worry

mccanns5.jpgMADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

NEWS of The World: “McCanns: Our year of hell over missing Maddie”

Says Kate McCann: “There were many moments when we hit rock bottom and sobbed, wondering how we could survive without knowing where our little girl was.

“It is pure torture to deal with and it has been a long year of hell. But what keeps us going is our overwhelming faith that Madeleine is alive and will come home.”

Says Gerry McCann “It is so hard at times, but we have to try and retain some normality for our other children.”

They revealed their turmoil to Ed Smart, whose 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth was found nine months after she was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002.

THE TIMES: “McCann’s to write book in order to raise funds to continue search”

Says Clarence Mitchell: “It will be the family’s story, the only official book. Kate and Gerry are both keen to put the truth of everything that has happened to them on record. It will be a detailed account of their experience, from the pain of the night Madeleine was kidnapped to being named as official suspects in the investigation.”

What about a calendar: The McCann Year?

Scott Pack, a former head of buying for Waterstone’s, said that the McCanns’ book would fall into the category of “misery memoir” or “inspirational biography”. He said: “I am sure there will be huge interest among publishers because it has the potential to be a huge success and they will not want it to go to someone else. It is bound to go for a decent amount and I think you are talking of at least £500,000. It could go for a million.”

Of course, it’s not the first book on the matter. And there will be more…

THE TIMES: “‘Madeleine McCann was abducted by an opportunistic paedophile’”

Says Mark William-Thomas: “The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is like no other I have seen before or will hopefully ever see again.”

So says the “former detective and authors on peadophile crimes”.

Madeleine became the victim of an opportunist and predatory paedophile. The abductor either lives in or had contact with Praia da Luz.

Thank you, detective. Any evidence?

THE INDEPENDENT: “From MI6 to Maddy”

‘The Mail on Sunday’ last week ran a “special investigation” into the police hunt for Madeleine McCann by David Rose, billed as “Britain’s foremost investigative reporter”. Could this be the same D Rose who admitted last autumn to having been duped into peddling misinformation for the Secret Service as a young hack? In a piece for the ‘New Statesman’ he confessed to penning “somewhat breathless” articles for ‘The Observer’ after being treated to Darjeeling and eclairs at the Ritz by an “urbane” senior MI6 agent exuding “clandestine glamour” and carrying a “rolled-up copy of ‘The Times’”.

GLASGOW SUNDAY MAIL: “Gerry McCann’s brother in pilgrimage to Portugal”

A pilgrimage?

GERRY McCANN has asked his brother John to go on a pilgrimage to Portugal to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance.Every week expats and locals attend a service at the tiny Our Lady of the Light Church to remember Madeleine in a service for missing children.

Says John McCann: “I am sure returning will be very emotional but I am going there to meet the people who have kept a regular vigil for Madeleine and thank them personally. Their commitment to prayer shows she has far from disappeared from their minds.” Worshippers say a special prayer “for those who have acted in evil or practised acts of kidnapping”.

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: “But these girls just wanna have water”

A survey of 4500 Girl Guides has identified the top concerns among girls aged five to 17 on a local, national and global level.

The report, What Girls Say, pinpoints water conservation in Australia as the most important issue for girls, with 21 per cent naming it among the three issues they cared most about.

Next came global warming (19 per cent), the environment (18 per cent), poverty (15 per cent), addictions and animal cruelty (both 8 per cent).

Kidnapping also emerged as a concern among the girls, who participated in the survey during the peak of publicity surrounding the disappearance last year of the British child Madeleine McCann in Portugal.

A pilgrimage?

I am absolutely of the opinion that somehow the McCanns are fully aware of how and why Madeleine is not around now. BUT - I have just read a report on the Times on-line. and I must admit that the report does sound feasible. That Madeleine was crying - got up, walked out of the open door of the apartment - and so on - I still dont like the MCcs.

Surely - if the pj have anything to charge the McCanns with - this should happen during the next few days, before they get their book underway. they surely would never allow them to earn money before they laid charges on them. If they are not charged before the end of this week, then I am of the opinion that they never will be.

Good evening Annie. So she did do everything the McC’s said she wouldn’t or couldn’t do? Get out of her bed? Be able to open the doors? Walk away. IMO they know exactly what happened or have an extremely good idea about it. Hence their extremely well phrased texts: they were “not there when she was taken”; they have nothing to do with her “disappearance”…

  32. annie1 Says:

Chatelaine - I absolutely agree with you, but for the life of me I cannot understand why the pj are dragging their feet with regard to charging them. Surely they cannot let them go ahead with a book and go through all the hype of the 1 year anniversary if they have anything atall on them?

Annie, I think the McC’s cannot publish a book right now, like Amaral cannot neither, until there’s some sort of an “end”" to this story. After all, they’re still arguidos.

I also think that the PJ have so much more information than we possibly can have, including the whereabouts, travel [arrival in PdL, etc.] and a more defined timeline of May 2 and 3, after the new interviews.

We’ve all been looking at/waiting for the telephone records and bank statements.
The other day I was bragging about the efficiency of my new car’s GPS [which "knows" up to 5 cm accurate where I am] and mentioned on the side that the only disadvantage is that the “Americans” [it's their satellite] know exactly where I am too.
Then wondered if their rented Scenic had such a GPS too … ;-)

  34. Châtelaine Says:

I cannot escape the feeling that the PJ really knows what happened. And that they take their time to get all evidence they need to press charges successfully.

BTW, someone mentioned today that they [PJ] maybe would want to celebrate their “success” at Chaplin’s. This may serve as a formal invitation to the PJ: the bill’s on me :-D

  35. annie1 Says:

Oh I am absolutely sure that there is a LOT of damning information which will eventually come out - I just cannot understand why it is taking so long. In my own mind from day one, I had no doubts whatsoever that the McCanns were fully aware of the circumstances surrounding their missing daughter - I recorded the first interview - as it happens, by mistake as I had intended to record on another channel. I have since played it over and the body language, the practiced speech, the “gagging” of Kate by Gerry and the whole issue regarding the cuddle cat - not ringing true to me anyway - but we shall see. I dont think I shall be saying “well I would never have thought it” but things are dragging on to the extent that I really do think that if there was enough concrete evidence then they would have been charged by now

  36. Châtelaine Says:

We have to be patient. Rebello and his team seem to be too.

  37. annie1 Says:

Maye the plan is to charge them on May 3?

    All suspicion started with
    * doors locked
    * doors unlocked
    * window closed
    * window open
    * shutters forced
    * shutters not forced

    Last “version” seems to be:
    * doors unlocked, window open, shutters not forced [and no valuables missing ;-) ]

  40. Châtelaine Says:

Good night, Annie et al [if any].

  41. annie1 Says:

It would be “McCann style” though - wouldn’t it? Better than an oscar!! They have courted the limelight, and if the pj decided that enough is enough and that May3 is the day, then I think it would have tremendous impact. Maybe, though, the pj want evidence in writing, and will wait until their book is published and use it as evidence against them.

  42. annie1 Says:

Goodnight - we shall see what we shall see!!

  43. val Says:

    Hi whoever”s about.

I was posting earlier and none of the Press reports were shown then. seems like the
McCanns have overdone it, the Press is definately critical wouldn”t you say. Apart
from wasting another £300,000 on Metodo3, what else do they plan to do to search
    for Madeleine.?

No plans you notice, no indication on how they propose to find Madeleine. Posters
would be useless, the child is a year older, perhaps an FBI photofit?

  44. Maravilha Says:

    I was reading on McCannfiles.com
an interview with Gerry’s mother, in which she tells the spirit of Madeleine’s
is visitig Kate nearly every night.

It is not the first time I read or hear about people of the UK and Irland who have this kind of experience.

Is Kate nervous or could this be true. Do spirits exist?

There are genuine cases of people who see “spirits”, in Kate”s case though I would
think it is her conscience troubling her in sleep and she is “dreaming” Madeleine.

disappearance? Any othe parent would have sleepless nights for months, if not

    —————————————————–

Yes. You’d have thought, if she was guilty and acting innocent, that she’d have had the sense to lie about that, wouldn’t you? I heard that interview on Woman’s Hour, when she said she was usually able to sleep, tired out after each day’s campaigning. I thought then how such an honest comment would come back to bite her. Silly girl! She should have said she hadn’t slept a wink since May 3rd.

Oh! But then people just might have said she was lying!

  52. val Says:

    46 Pilimary

Amaral isn”t allowed to publish his book until the case is shelved or a charge is
made. In which case the files would be made public so we would know what evidence
    the PJ had anyway.

I am wondering if it is some deliberate ploy to frighten the McCanns, if Amaral knows
so much why hasn”t a charge been made before now.? Notice how quickly the McCanns
said they were going to write a book.!!!!!!

  53. val Says:

    51 Maria

I think it was Gandolf who posted the story of a young boy who was walking literally
yards behind his parents and was abducted< think about seven or eight years ago.
Every year his parents go back to where he went missing, hoping to find some clue.

The McCanns have made no real effort, the generosity of the Public has ensured they can pay a dodgy outfit like Metodo 3 who do not even specialise in finding missing
children. All they have done is act like Celebrities and I think it is shameful the way
poor Madeleine has been used like a money machine.

  54. Gandolf Says:

The McCanns have not been asked to return to Portugal, I am pretty sure that the PJ hope they never return to Portugal, otherwise they the PJ will have to put up or shut up.
Almost a year a “mountain” of evidence, and nothing no arrests no charges, “mountain of evidence my arse.

  55. coco Says:

    An opportunist paedophile!

Paedophiles are not opportunist by nature!

They are cold, calculating people who plan every move. This is why the police have trouble finding them.

How many paedophiles go into an apartment under constant observation by the Clan gang, leave with a 3yr old child who doesn’t scream the place down - whilst one of the Clan is sat next door and wanders into a narrow street or starts a car up and is not caught on CCTV anywhere?

Do we have confirmation that GMc really, really, truly lost his wallet and reported it missing? With the entourage in tow, I am surprised that one of them did not pick it up and hand it back to him.

Or should we tell all those people who think the Clan were under constant surveillance that this is one of those many occasions when they were not under strict observation?

Did the opportunistic paedophile carry Fairy-dust to sprinkle in the twins and M’s eyes before he carried her off leaving her brother and sister?

Off out into a cold dark night. My arse!

Where is GMc’s wallet? Why has some hoodie not handed it in for a reward?

  56. val Says:

    54 Gandolf

Hi there, you are obviously a Night Owl like me. I was watching The Pelican Brief
earlier, seen it before but good film.

I really don”t know what to believe, surely the Portugese Police would not have spent
all this time and money if they didn”t think they could bring charges…..something
is going on that we don”t know about. After the interviews a meeting was supposedly
held with the Portugese Prosecutor to decide how to proceed. The reconstruction
was mooted, but the McCanns will no go………WHY?

  57. val Says:

    coco

    Hi there,

Which wallet are we talking about? The one when he went back to the U.K. was
apparently “posted to him, minus the English currency, but he didn”t care because he
had the photo of Madeleine in the wallet and that was more important.

Is there another wallet, if so he”s a bit careless don”t you think?

  58. coco Says:

The Mcs will not go to PDL because they will be arrested!

  59. coco Says:

    Hi Val!

That’s the one - but I would love to know when he reported it stolen - and to which police force/s!

  60. coco Says:

    Val!

Any photo of M would have been worth a fortune or ebay or any newspaper at the time - I do not believe that it was posted back.

Anybody would have loved to get in on the action and make a fuss about the finding of the wallet.

It would have made the front page of the Sun or Express.

  61. Maravilha Says:

    56 Val

If a judge decides that the McCanns have to show up in Portugal, for the recosntitution, they will have to obey.
England is a part of the European Union, after all we are one country with different cultures and languages but unified qua crimes and some other things.
If the PJ was already working with the British police, from the beginning,
and later they went to England and were helped by the British, a judge from Portugal has the same power a British judge has.
If Portugal is good and trusted enough to fight in Afghanistan, beside the British troops,as a true allied, is good enough as well to get the McCanns to reconstitue May the 3rd.

  62. coco Says:

    Maravilha!

Precisely why extradition lawyers were immediately employed. Pinochet’s in fact.

The lawyers will say KMc not fit to travel, needs regular supervision, not fit to stand trial etc., etc., etc.

  63. val Says:

    58 coco

The PJ obviously do not want to issue a warrant and have some lengthy delaying
tactics with the McCanns extradition Lawyer, but why don”t they just issue the warrant now? It would certainly negate any sympathy the public have for the McCanns and
stop any ideas they have about writing a Book to make yet more money out of
    Madeleine.

I presume you meant a wallet lost inPDL when you mentioned the Clan, what”s this, first Iv”e heard of it.

  64. coco Says:

The Weds show on Tv is timed perfectly to coincide with the anniversary week. the Portuguese police have known about this for some time, which is why they have taken all the statements again before the media attention on Wednesday f*cks everything up again.

Also - the PJ have the initial statements in sealed boxes that nobody can see until the charges are brought.

They must all be crapping themselves trying to remember who said what and how many times they have changed their stories since.

And then there is the cop-out on initial translations!!!! “When I said black I meant white!” Etc.

  65. Maravilha Says:

    62 Coco,

And Gerry is badly suffering of his menstruation, etc, etc.

Portugal has good ambulances, hospitals psychiaters if they are not feeling wel.
Coco, it was a human being, it was a defenseless child, dependig on the care of her parents, depending on the responsibility of her parents.
Whatever happened, it is a scandal.

If they are innocent ,they have nothing to fear.

  66. coco Says:

    Val!

I’m that tired I cannot remember exactly - but I think he lost it in London

  67. coco Says:

    Maravilha!!! lol

I don’t think that we are allowed to mention GM’s menstrual cycle on here because only a handful of people know he’s an hermaphrodite! Ssssh!

You are so right about the Portuguese standards of health-care but the lawyers have not been employed for thousands of pounds for all this time for nothing!!!

  68. val Says:

    61 Maria

There was talk initially of Government interference, but Gordon Brown has too much
to worry about now to get involved in the McCann case.

Coco is right, the McCanns retained top Lawyers within 24 hours of returning to the
U.K., but if they signed an agreement before leaving Portugal, they must honour it.
I don”t think they can get away with Kate being too frail , she was well enough to go
    to America and Brussels!!!!!!!!!

If they try to pull that stunt, everyone in the World will see through it and they will
never be able to justify not being willing to help in this reconstruction which could
throw light on what happened to Madeleine.

  69. Gandolf Says:

Val the McCanns lawyers suggested the reconstruction last june, not the PJ.
I don’t know how much clearer I can be, you will not find one official statement requesting the McCanns or anyone else to appear in a reconstruction, it is a myth, bollox!

  70. Maravilha Says:

    Coco,

I don’t understand about laws but I think Pinochet’s case was different although he is responsible for lots of deaths.

Actually, Chile asked for his extradiction based on those deaths he caused.

If the McCanns are so sure Maddie is alive, abducted, why the same Pinochet’s lawyers?

  71. coco Says:

I would lock them in isolation for ten years just for leaving the children that night! Never mind every night.

Each and every one of the Clan who has admitted to leaving their kids in PDL should have their kids put in care and they should be made examples of by 2 year prison sentences. In Rome do as the Romans.

Any Portuguese person would be sat in a cell now.

Too many children on holidays are left to fend for themselves and fall off balconies, fall down steps or drown and get cuts on their knees wasting valuable resources all because their parents looked away for a moment.

They have been wholly neglectful and breached the rights of M to be responsibly looked after. As did every other child that was left in those ugly apartments.

  72. val Says:

    67 coco

What on earth is so interesting about the McCanns that warrants a 2 hour Documentary? I think it is a sign of desperation, Rachel Oldfield, Justine McGuiness
John McCann supposedly going to Portugal etc smacks of all hands to the deck. Are
Madeleine”s Grandparents going to PDL as well as stand in for her Parents?

  73. coco Says:

The Pinochet lawyers - like any other top, bestest, marvellousest lawyers use loopholes!

Amaral’s team had never seen such an anally clean apartment - that had three kids residing in it.

Gandolf is not the best person to direct questions to. I often wondered at his agenda.

He’s not clever enough to be a paid mole on here as his last answer shows. Dozens of TV companies offered to do reconstructions and it was only when they were swamped with offers that they were ground down enough to say that they would eventuallly consider it.

Their timelines and witness evidence is so crap that the reconstruction would have to stop every two minutes.

for the McCanns, after all they ARE the main characters. Presumably they would have to pay Warners and private owners, yet adding more expense and time, not forgetting
the cost of flying all the witnesses, it”s a huge undertaking.

I actually hadn’t made any comment about the reconstruction! I know the Mcs asked to do a full reconstruction within a short time of Madeleine’s disappearance but the police wouldn’t allow them to do it because of the secrecy laws. I think it would have been more useful then then one year one. Crimewatch has demonstrated frequently how useful accurate reconstructions can be within a short time of the actual crime. The later it’s done, the less likelihood of anyone’s memory being jogged, I suppose. People simply forget things they’ve seen. That’s why they wanted to do it while everything was fresh in everyone’s minds and tourists, or locals, might have remembered noticing something. But I’m not saying they shouldn’t go back. I’m just doubtful how useful it could be now.

I simply don”t agree with you about their efforts to find Madeleine. I cannot imagine any parents doing more than they have done. I’d be surprised if anyone could find parents who had done more to find a missing child. They still seem to be working constantly on the matter although, of course, GM has gone back to work. KM hasn’t, partly, no doubt, for emotional reasons, but also because she seems to remain totally committed to the search. Obviously, this is only my impression but it’s one that seems to be shared by many, doesn’t it?

I agree about the money thing but they put anything they get into the fund. I’ve no doubt that if someone suggested a better firm than M3, they’d use them. Mark Williams suggests in the Times that they should now set up a “proper” investigation in Portugal. They can’t do that while they are arguidos of course. He doesn’t say exactly how they should do this though! Which group are they supposed to use? FBI?? British police? Another private detective firm? He is curiously silent on this! Not that easy.

Others like Amaral will be able to use the money for whatever purposes they wish. At least the Mcs are using the money to look for Madeleine. You may not think M3 are particularly good but they’re not using the money for themselves, apart from the two mortgage payments which allowed them to stay a bit longer in Portugal because K did not want to leave at the time. G wanted to come home earlier but K couldn’t make the break, understandable perhaps. I think that’s how those two payments came about. Apart from that, I think the money has been used for the campaign, hasn’t it? They aren’t using it for holidays and new cars! The fund has to be properly audited.

I agree that money makes things look shoddy but searching for a child professionally takes a huge amount of money. They have to get it somehow I suppose. Maybe they will stop soon. Maybe they’ve given themselves a time deadline after which things will change. Just don’t know, do we?

Maybe I’m totally out of touch and charges are about to be brought against them. Some people think this week?? I just haven’t been able to see much evidence so far but then, the PJ may be keeping most of it under wraps and have a few surprises up their sleeves! We’ll see pretty soon I suppose. I certainly don’t assume I know the truth! How could any of us really know? We have to trust that Rebelo will get there. He seems excellent doesn’t he? Stopped all those dreadful leaks and lies and also has the reputation for being fearless.

    Must go to bed now.

  89. Gandolf Says:

Gonçalo Amaral called her “cold” and said that Kate McCann was an”actress”

    Pedro Sousa Tavares

An article from a Spanish newspaper ridicules the inspectors of the PJ.

It is a very hard article to the Portuguese police in general and to Gonçalo Amaral in particular, the one that was published on Sunday in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
The phrase concerning to Kate McCann was atributed to Gonçalo Amaral, the cop who was removed from the case after critics to the British police:
“You did not see the mother (of Madeleine). You do not know the mother. She is cold. She is cunning. She is an actress”.

The journalist that writes the article, Aníbal Malvar, had been already in Praia da Luz and has been following the case. The declarations were given presuming that the source would not be identified. But the journalist considers that after the retirement of the inspector there is no need to maintain the anonymity.

The conversation was based in the critics made to the inspector by the British press. But Gonçalo Amaral was only offended by the comments concerning his outfits: “He is not concerned of being classified as a drunk. What upsets him is that the British press talks about his wrinkled outfits.”Damn Aníbal. This suit is Hugo Boss”.

Aníbal Malvar divulges also a conversation between the inspectors João Tavares and Francisco Meireles that he heard. In the pieces quoted, João Tavares appears describing the virtues of “improvisation” of the “Portuguese cops”. “We cannot loose our intuition as cops… We have to be wilful, we are not Norwegian. We are Portuguese and the Portuguese cops improvise, count on intuition”. And he adds “We smoke, we like to eat and to drink”.

The article clearly states that the Portimão police “is convinced that the couple is guilty in the disappearance of the daughter. And that they manage to hide it thanks to their high level influences”.

The DN tried to contact Gonçalo Amaral to comment. Carlos Anjos, from the Union of the Criminal Investigators said that “the Spanish have much more cases of missing children than we have in Portugal”. And he added concerning this reportage: “If every time that a crazy or any other person, or whatever, says bad things about the police we had to comment or react we would not do anything else. We must have the notion that people are free to express their opinions, each person has his/her opinion”.

    This is serious!

Had to even wite to the newspaper that printed this - but don’t know if they will print it! They don’t normally publish anything I write on this subject! Or it gets pulled off quick ….. Like a Judge up a back-entry!

I am most terribly concerned that whilst driving KMc back from the nick, Justine Mcguiness was given the impression that KMc was offered a deal by the police.

I am then further concerned at another ‘impression’ that Justine was given by KMc. That KMc’s lawyer had told her to accept the deal - to test her!!!

Did KMc say these things to Justine McGuiness or not? Is Justine McGuiness ultra-psychic or Paul McKenna?

KMc may have actually wanted to give the impression that she was tired, thirsty or hungry! Not the above!

Is Ms McGuiness scared of saying KMc actually said these things in case KMc decides to retract she ever said them and then go on to accuse and sue Justine McGuiness for saying things that she never said????

I promise you that all the people who rush to the defence of the Clan will send them deeper and deeper into the mire of murky wurky waters than they could possibly imagine.

Fucking hell! CM looks like a proper pro in light of Justine’s faux pas after faux pas.

Bring on JMc and Jabba-Philly pleeeeease! I am working from home this week so I would really appreciate a bit of fun watching them arrive in PDL.

I am wondering if everybody will shut their shutters in PDL? As a mark of self-respect and in solidarity to their local police.

We all know who should get their skinny arses back there this week but we hadn’t accounted for their film premiere! How fucking remiss!

Right at the time a reconstruction of events - according to the Clan is being re-worked - via the new information dictated by the Clan - the Clan decide to have a National premiere on the most watched channel in the UK.

Fuck the expense to the Portuguese reconstruction - they expect the entire nation to sit and watch them and their family for two fucking hours toagree that their daughter may be alive.

Even if M hasn’t been eaten by a sardine and she was abducted by a bloke who has changed more times than a traffic light at rush hour, the Clan saw to it that she would never return by publicising the colomba in M’s eye.

This child cannot be found unless somebody says where she is.

I would only be this positive that the body would never be found if I had eaten M myself.

Everybody close to this whole charade is so utterly confident that this little child’s body will not be found that I am wondering if they have eaten her or something.

It’s the Portuguese police who now own the five principle points in journalism: Who, what, where, why and how. And the public are hanging onto the news in the hope that there will be some glimpse into their world.

Their secrecy laws have actually worked in their favour – the less that is given to the public, the more they want to know. Perhaps this is the reason why Police inspector Paulo Cristovao’s book “The Star of Madeleine”, has become a best-seller in Portugal and perhaps why retired Portuguese police officer Goncalo Amaral’s own book about the case, “The Truth of the Lie” will also turn into a best seller.
