Madeleine McCann: A Pilgrimage, An Official Book And Australian Girl Guides Worry
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
NEWS of The World: “McCanns: Our year of hell over missing Maddie”
Says Kate McCann: “There were many moments when we hit rock bottom and sobbed, wondering how we could survive without knowing where our little girl was.
“It is pure torture to deal with and it has been a long year of hell. But what keeps us going is our overwhelming faith that Madeleine is alive and will come home.”
Says Gerry McCann “It is so hard at times, but we have to try and retain some normality for our other children.”
They revealed their turmoil to Ed Smart, whose 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth was found nine months after she was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2002.
THE TIMES: “McCann’s to write book in order to raise funds to continue search”
Says Clarence Mitchell: “It will be the family’s story, the only official book. Kate and Gerry are both keen to put the truth of everything that has happened to them on record. It will be a detailed account of their experience, from the pain of the night Madeleine was kidnapped to being named as official suspects in the investigation.”
What about a calendar: The McCann Year?
Scott Pack, a former head of buying for Waterstone’s, said that the McCanns’ book would fall into the category of “misery memoir” or “inspirational biography”. He said: “I am sure there will be huge interest among publishers because it has the potential to be a huge success and they will not want it to go to someone else. It is bound to go for a decent amount and I think you are talking of at least £500,000. It could go for a million.”
Of course, it’s not the first book on the matter. And there will be more…
THE TIMES: “‘Madeleine McCann was abducted by an opportunistic paedophile’”
Says Mark William-Thomas: “The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is like no other I have seen before or will hopefully ever see again.”
So says the “former detective and authors on peadophile crimes”.
Madeleine became the victim of an opportunist and predatory paedophile. The abductor either lives in or had contact with Praia da Luz.
Thank you, detective. Any evidence?
THE INDEPENDENT: “From MI6 to Maddy”
‘The Mail on Sunday’ last week ran a “special investigation” into the police hunt for Madeleine McCann by David Rose, billed as “Britain’s foremost investigative reporter”. Could this be the same D Rose who admitted last autumn to having been duped into peddling misinformation for the Secret Service as a young hack? In a piece for the ‘New Statesman’ he confessed to penning “somewhat breathless” articles for ‘The Observer’ after being treated to Darjeeling and eclairs at the Ritz by an “urbane” senior MI6 agent exuding “clandestine glamour” and carrying a “rolled-up copy of ‘The Times’”.
GLASGOW SUNDAY MAIL: “Gerry McCann’s brother in pilgrimage to Portugal”
A pilgrimage?
GERRY McCANN has asked his brother John to go on a pilgrimage to Portugal to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance.Every week expats and locals attend a service at the tiny Our Lady of the Light Church to remember Madeleine in a service for missing children.
Says John McCann: “I am sure returning will be very emotional but I am going there to meet the people who have kept a regular vigil for Madeleine and thank them personally. Their commitment to prayer shows she has far from disappeared from their minds.” Worshippers say a special prayer “for those who have acted in evil or practised acts of kidnapping”.
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: “But these girls just wanna have water”
A survey of 4500 Girl Guides has identified the top concerns among girls aged five to 17 on a local, national and global level.
The report, What Girls Say, pinpoints water conservation in Australia as the most important issue for girls, with 21 per cent naming it among the three issues they cared most about.
Next came global warming (19 per cent), the environment (18 per cent), poverty (15 per cent), addictions and animal cruelty (both 8 per cent).
Kidnapping also emerged as a concern among the girls, who participated in the survey during the peak of publicity surrounding the disappearance last year of the British child Madeleine McCann in Portugal.

“surely the Portugese Police would not have spent
all this time and money if they didn”t think they could bring charges…..something
is going on that we don”t know about. ”
I agree with this too, Val…….it’s why I see it as a looming balancing act…….and am not quite sure if ANYONE really can tell the ultimate outcome……..I think that our ‘powerful ones’ miscalculated considerably and so many mistakes have been made by their team
But perhaps for them, one of the biggest kudos has been testing the power of the Press to totally mystify - [in the Marxian sense] I reckon they are happy about that one atleast……..

Val 52:
“if Amaral knows
so much why hasn”t a charge been made before now.?”
I never see anyone consider that this may be because the tentacles of this case go way beyond the McCs……and that to merely charge them before netting the greatest possible number of involved accessories - is not their intent? Allegedly………

164 Noseycow points out:
“are you sure about that??
The newspapers have dictated the political agenda in the UK for many years now. The Amber alert system is just one example (from many) of the throwing away of public money because of the beliefs / fears of the ’sunreader’ family… :(”
Absolutely, Nosey……..this [and the involvement of all the big guns] is what makes me profoundly pessimistic most often. I reckon that we could very well have to watch not only the sickening spin gaining credibility with majority opinion but cunning and successful legal manoeverings with the full support of the British people
I so hope I could be wrong…….

If the McCanns have to do with Madeleine’s disappearence and
on the other hand are teaching, supporting the phone calls of the twins to her,
I really consider it sick.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
According to Mrs. McCann, Gerry’s mother, the twins use to pick up their toys-telephones every day: “where are you, Madeleine?’
If this is true, it is tough for them, still very young, trained to talk about her every day and to feel she is missing.
They are now 3, they were 2 when she went missing and after such a long time of disappearence it sounds sick to me.
Every day is too much, a child of this age is not capable to remember such a thing by himself, every day.
It seems to me that they have being trained to carry the same cross the parents are carrying. Too much for them. Let them be children.

I think you are being very horrid. The p.p. must have been in PdL. What more contact do you need ?
Seriously though … dont we all love Clarrie ..Kate and Gerry are preparing to be thrust back under the spotlight, with next weekend marking a full year since Madeleine’s disappearance.
Mr Mitchell said: “They recognise it is an opportunity to re-energise the search for Madeleine.”
The mot juste, Monsieur Michelle, is “START” the search for Madeleine. ‘Start’, as in commence, begin, put in train, take action towards, etc.
Unless of course you know there is no point. And that by searching you might inadvertently lead people to find something you didn’t want them to. Even when searching or pretending to search Old Sigmund Freud has a way of influencing behaviour.
Better not to, on the whole. Stay on the computer Googling and playing with photos.
(or whatever it was you were actually doing, of course, of which I have no knowledge, nor can I summon up the power to imagine what you were doing that was more important than scouring the resort, the cliff, the scrub land, the beach at low tide, interviewing everyone in PdL)
Oh, and by the way, what is a ‘full’ year. Is it different from a normal year. I think we should know

just as a matter of interest, you say that Mari Luz parents are bringing a case against the Mccanns have you any proof of this or is this one of your wild theories. I ask becase I seen a comment from mari’s parents saying they sympathise with the Mccanns, at least they know the fate of their daughter unlike Madeleines parents.
———————————————–
As far as I am aware, relationships with the McCanns rapidly soured after they announced that they were going to put up posters showing the little Spanish girl, without having obtained the permission of her parents.
‘ Juan Jose Cortes, the girl’s father said at the time: “We don’t think it’s appropriate to relate one thing with the other, because they are two distinct cases, two different countries and two different lines of investigation. Nobody asked us anything.”
And the EFE [Spanish news agency] said he is considering taking legal action for using his daughter’s image for the campaign.
Both of these points can easily be found on Anorak…

Police investigate death threat made to Kate and Gerry McCann
Last updated at 11:53am on 28th April 2008
Police are investigating a death threat made against the parents of Madeleine McCann.
On the eve of the first anniversary of her disappearance from the family’s holiday apartment in Portugal, it was revealed Kate and Gerry McCann had passed on details of hate mail - including the threat - to detectives. It had been delivered to their Rothley home in Leicestershire.
Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell confirmed today: “Kate and Gerry still get armfuls of mail every day and it is all read. The vast majority is supportive, or at least polite, but very occasionally there is something nasty.
“On two occasions we have had to refer it to the police but I don’t want to go into any detail about that.”

* McCann twins pick up the phone every day to ask ‘Where are you Madeleine?
He said one, however, was a threat against their lives. Kate and Gerry are preparing to be thrust back under the spotlight, with next weekend marking a full year since Madeleine’s disappearance.
Mr Mitchell said: “They recognise it is an opportunity to re-energise the search for Madeleine.”
Members of the missing four-year-old’s family are set to fly to the coastal resort to mark the anniversary in Saturday.
Her uncle and aunt John McCann and Trisha Cameron are expected at a special church service in Praia da Luz.
But the Anglican chaplain Father Haynes Hubbard, who will conduct prayers, confirmed her parents had decided against attending on Saturday.
Father Hubbard said: “This was an act of violence and an act of evil but we will continue praying for her.”
The missing child’s parents, who have participated in an ITV documentary to be broadcast on Wednesday, are officially suspects in the Portuguese investigation but deny any wrongdoing. Mr Mitchell said the couple may write a book about their daughter and their year.
He said: “The idea of writing an official book at some point is appealing. It’s a legitimate way of raising money for the fund but would also give them a chance to put across their side of the story, and to talk about some of the wider issues.”
Scott Pack, a former head of buying for Waterstone’s, said the McCanns’ book would fall into the category of “misery memoir”.
He said: “It’s bound to go for a decent amount and I think you’re talking of at least £500,000. It could go for a million.
