Madeleine McCann: Daily Express Editor Stands Down And a Joke
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
THE GUARDIAN: “PEOPLE”
Meanwhile, a current editor, Peter Hill of the Daily Express, stood down yesterday from the Press Complaints Commission, not entirely coincidentally following the company’s recent £550,000 payout to the family of Madeleine McCann for publishing false stories about them.
The donation, right?
The PCC’s chairman, Christopher Meyer, had said Hill’s position was under review following the Express’s apology
THE IRISH TIMES: “Comedy controversies: all in the worst possible taste - Some of the gags that attracted most opprobrium.”
Sean Hughes on Madeleine McCann
At a show last year, Irish comic Sean Hughes noted how the parents of missing child Madeleine McCann had visited the Pope in the Vatican. “I know the Pope was in the Hitler Youth, but I don’t think he has anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance,” he said.
A joke should be funny. Try this one, or this one. Or this one…
Subsequent newspaper reports struck the tone “comedian thinks Madeleine McCann is game for a laugh”, and RTÉ’s Liveline programme fielded phone calls saying the comic should have been banned from performing in Ireland.
Hughes should be ignored - becsue he’s not all that funny.

just read it, that’s interesting. if i remeber correctly the mccans approached a couple of other detective agencies before engaging metodo3, and they were turned down as clients, possibly because of legal conflicts, who knows.

and re jona morais blog http://joana-morais.blogspot.com/ of suing another paper well
it looks like they may be running out of money again perhaps.

Peter Hill of the Daily Express stood down….he should not have. How do we know that the “untruths” printed about the McCanns were just that. What power some people have, and cheek too, to actually grab a lawyer and sue. They are suspects in this case! They do ask for all they get by their behavior IMHO.

they seem to be having a lot of bad luck, first the payout where they also practically declared them mccans innocent — something i simply don’t understand, then the bashing of the owner, the poor sales circulation and then this..

Or possibly because having listened to what they had to say, and having reviewed even the sparse available evidence they made a professional decision that …..
